Chapter Fifty-Eight: If I Really Have to Sacrifice, My Bones Will Be with the Warriors
Wang Changchuan, head of the Jinzhou Public Security Fire Detachment, was born in 1966, enlisted in the army in 1985, graduated from Xi'an Armed Police College, and majored in building fire prevention.
Wang Changchuan worked in the Dalian Public Security Fire Detachment and was engaged in construction and review business. He has worked with companies for many years, with a focus on major fire hazards and fire protection issues. The experiences he explores – such as basement fire prevention, residential fire water supply, furniture city fire prevention – are written into national and industry fire codes. Wang Changchuan is an expert commander.
Wang Changchuan's family is in Dalian. July 16 was the weekend, he did not return home, he was on duty in the detachment. At about 21 o'clock that night, he received a call from the command center of the Provincial Public Security Fire Brigade, asking the Jinzhou City Public Security Fire Brigade to prepare a foam car. As soon as he heard the "bubble car" Wang Changchuan fully understood the seriousness of the situation, and it was very serious. When he was in the Dalian Public Security Fire Brigade, Wang Changchuan reviewed the fire protection specifications for the construction of large oil tanks, and the drawings of the Dalian West Pacific Oil Refinery were reviewed by Wang Changchuan. China's largest crude oil tank reserves of 150,000 cubic meters, and the world's largest crude oil tank reserves of 500,000 cubic meters, is a ship. Wang Changchuan understood these things in his heart. When he heard the words "prepare for the foam car," he knew that a large oil tank had caught fire, and the picture of the Huangdao oil tank fire killing 14 officers and soldiers immediately came to mind.
Wang Changchuan had no intention of retreating, although he knew better than others the serious consequences of the oil tank fire. The soldiers did not know how to save the fire of the oil tank, nor did they know how to prevent it. The Jinzhou detachment had a soldier who went to the fire to extinguish the oil tank fire, and Wang Changchuan would also stand with him and put out the fire together.
He ordered Wu Jiantao, deputy chief of staff of the detachment, and Li Baoquan, chief of the logistics department, to go to Dalian with him. The first batch of reinforcements of the Jinzhou City Fire Detachment was assembled at 22 o'clock, got on the highway, and went straight to Dalian.
On the command vehicle, Wang Changchuan announced the establishment of a command center, with him as the commander and Wu Jiantao and Li Baoquan as deputy commanders, respectively responsible for the deployment of the team and the work of logistics support. Squadron cadres are responsible for fire reconnaissance.
At 4:30 a.m. on the 17th, 5 fire fighting vehicles and 28 officers and soldiers of the Jinzhou Public Security Fire Detachment arrived at the fire scene. Wang Changchuan found the general headquarters to ask for instructions, and he met Liu Leguo, deputy director of the Provincial Public Security Department, Wang Luzhi, chief of the Provincial Fire Brigade, Li Jinhua, deputy chief of the Provincial Fire Brigade, and Cong Shuyin, head of the Dalian City Public Security Fire Detachment.
Wang Luzhi asked, "How many cars did you bring?" How many people? How much foam? ”
Wang Changchuan reported one by one.
Wang Luzhi said: "Pump room, your task is to put out the fire in the pump room. ”
Wang Changchuan couldn't figure out where the pump room was, and wanted to find an employee from PetroChina to lead him to the pump room, but he couldn't find their people. Fortunately, Wang Changchuan has been engaged in construction review work, and he knows that the area around the pump room should be a pipeline control system. He and Wu Jiantao boarded the fire truck to look for the whitest fire, the fire reaching to the sky, and the place where there was a house. Sure enough, I found it.
The pump room pressurizes the crude oil stored in the tanks, and if it explodes, it will definitely breathe fire, which is not the same as the luster of flowing fire. They came to the pump room and parked the car. When Wang Changchuan got out of the car, his boots stepped on the soft asphalt, and there was a loud noise. He finished thinking about it, this is the asphalt in the crude oil, this fire has been burning for I don't know how long, it's over. Wang Changchuan often flips through a textbook "Combustion", in which the combustibles expressed in the book belong to category A, and gasoline is a category. Crude oil is boiled to produce liquefied gas, gasoline, diesel and bitumen sequentially.
If crude oil burns, the most terrible factor is not the gasoline and diesel content in it, but the water in the crude oil.
Water is the devil in crude oil fires. Crude oil contains water, oil on top, and water on bottom. When crude oil is burned, heat waves are generated in the tank instead of flames. From the heat wave to the bottom, the water is heated, turning into water vapor and oil vapor, which evolves into boiling and splashing like the principle of millet fluttering a pot. At this time, the steam hits the floating roof and a scream occurs. Once the water, oil and vapor rush out of the tank and combine with the oxygen in the air, a deflagration occurs, and a flame appears. Even a tank with 100,000 tons of reserves shuddered at this time, which shows how powerful water vapor is. When the screams happen, and the tank trembles, the boiling overflow will be overwhelming. At that time, the firefighters had nowhere to hide.
If a splash occurs, there is only 10 to 20 seconds from aura to ejection. Splash heights of 30 to 50 meters are possible. The Huangdao fire, which killed 14 fighters, was caused by the splashing of oil tanks. The boiling oil covered them all over, and each of them had a water gun in their hands when they died, and the whole process took only about 10 seconds. How far can a person run in 10 seconds? The reserves of the oil tanks that were sprayed by the Huangdao fire are only 20,000 tons. In front of the fire, there are more than a dozen oil tanks of 100,000 tons side by side. Some burst into flames, some were on the verge of deflagration, and a sharp whistling sound could be heard in the air.
The thick black smoke is several hundred meters high and occupies tens of thousands of square meters in the air. The smoke means that tens of thousands of tons of crude oil have already been burned.
At this time—Wang Changchuan recalled afterwards—sadness poured from head to toe. Wang Changchuan said, frankly speaking, at that moment, I felt that my life had come to an end, and I had seen the end of my life. There is regret - how did I choose a career in firefighting? However, this thought was soon replaced by a second thought, which was goodbye. He subconsciously looked at his watch, took out his mobile phone, and wanted to say goodbye to his parents, wife and children. The hands of the watch show 4:30 a.m. Wang Changchuan hesitated, it was the second half of the night, to call or not to call? Stop calling, he picked up his phone. Immediately afterwards, the third thought became the dominant and supported Wang Changchuan to fight until the fire was extinguished.
Wang Changchuan's third thought was: Today is duty-free, I want to be with my soldiers. His heart trembled when he saw the soldiers around him who were spreading water belts and attacking with foam guns. If the boiling happens, he will already live to be 44 years old, and the fighters are only in their early 20s. At this time, Wang Changchuan's eyes were blurred, and his tears blocked the fire and smoke. He had already made up his mind, whether it was boiling or splashing, if the crude oil covered the position of the Jinzhou detachment in an instant, and people would clean up the fire in the future, they would find my bones with the soldiers, and I, the detachment leader, did not take half a step back. If a soldier is sacrificed and he is still alive, how can he explain to the soldier's family? How to explain to the chief? How do you explain it to your colleagues? Wang Changchuan decided that there was no hesitation.
Being with a warrior can give them courage. Wang Changchuan knew in his heart that no matter how nervous the soldiers were during the attack, their eyes would always be on whether there were cadres around them. With cadres around them, they have the backbone. Wang Changchuan said that Liu Leguo and Wang Luzhi are both shuttling at the front of the position, what are they as small cadres? As a commander, Wang Changchuan reminded himself not to command recklessly, to be calm and sensitive, and to use his experience to maximize the safety factor of the soldiers. He gave himself an order: Wang Changchuan, your mission is to bring your fighters home safely.
Wang Changchuan told Zhang Cong, deputy squadron leader of the Tiebei Squadron: "You must keep the walkie-talkie in your ears at all times, if I say withdraw, I will withdraw immediately, and I can do without water guns and water cannons." ”
Wang Changchuan monitored the oil tank, and he ordered Zhao Long, the squad leader of the Guta squadron, to monitor the wall of the pump room. Observe the fire and environmental safety with the highest level of attention.
At dawn, Wang Changchuan saw that the cover of the sewer well was all gone, and the oil and water in the well were tumbling and bubbling. He ordered all men to walk in the middle of the road and not to the side to prevent falling into the well.
Wang Changchuan has experienced many chemical fire accidents. In July 2007, an ammonia truck at a factory in Panjin leaked. The concentration of exposure to the air reaches 17%, and if it is blown by the wind to nearby villages, it can cause great harm to the residents. Wang Changchuan ordered the preparation of acetic acid, poured it into the water tank of the fire truck, and hit the ammonia leakage point with a water gun, neutralizing the toxicity of ammonia and turning it into ammonia acetate, a kind of chemical fertilizer, which is harmless to the human body. Scientific rescue, turning danger into safety.
Another time, a company leaked ethylene, and the special service squadron went to the scene to measure it with a combustible meter, and the concentration had exceeded the standard, and it would explode immediately when it encountered an open flame. Wang Changchuan had the fighters dilute with a flowering water gun, which increased the minimum ignition energy and eliminated the explosive conditions of ethylene.
In October 2010, a large truck loaded with 20 tons of titanium tetrachloride passed through at night. On the highway, a woman bends down to pick up a mineral water bottle. The large truck scrambled to dodge, rolled over, and rear-ended the vehicle. Titanium tetrachloride volatilizes when it encounters air, producing a highly toxic gas. Wang Changchuan ordered the fighters to cover calcium oxide and quicklime on titanium tetrachloride to produce a chemical reaction and eliminate toxicity, and if they were reckless, the soldiers' lives would be in danger. The driver of the rear car who was rear-ended was smoked to death on the spot.
At present, the soldiers are in danger every second, and there is no way to chemically decompose and neutralize the tsunami-like crude oil fire, so they can only be cooled down by water and foam. The gurgling sound of cesspools, pumping stations and pipes is the sound of oil.
Wang Changchuan observed that the top of the tank of high-risk chemicals not far away is welded virtually, and it will burst open when it is roasted. The benzene inside will explode a second time when it sees air.
In Wang Changchuan's view, the crude oil tank will not explode because the floating roof is alive. However, there is a possibility of boiling and splattering.
The fire burned so big and exploded so often, why didn't the No. 103 tank boil and splash? Wang Changchuan thinks that the oil in the tank is almost outflowing. The flowing fires on the ground and at sea prove that crude oil has flowed out a lot. If there wasn't so much oil coming out, a splash would definitely happen. After dawn, Wang Changchuan judged that there was only about one meter of crude oil left in the tank, which was estimated to be about 2,000 tons. Why? Wang Changchuan found a one-meter-high valve leaking oil and spitting fire on the southeast side of tank No. 103, and he organized a position to put out the fire. The fire was extinguished as soon as it was hit, and it burned when it was not hit, and the flowing fire flowed all the way to Tank 102. They did not let up in the fire, the fire was extinguished, and the oil did not flow. They completed a firefighting task that was not assigned by the General Command. This proves that the oil stored in the tank is only one meter thick.
At 7 a.m. on the 17th, Wang Changchuan's wife, who was at home in downtown Dalian, called him. The wife said, "There is a strong smell of gasoline in the air, so it may be on fire." "The families of firefighters are very sensitive to fires. Wang Changchuan said calmly: "The oil depot caught fire and has been extinguished, and I am in Dalian." With that, he turned off the phone. He heard his wife's voice, and he made her hear. Wang Changchuan felt very relieved. At this time, there was only 1 hour and 30 minutes before the general attack.
The fire was windy, the sea breeze was strong, and the wind direction was uncertain. When the north wind blows, the fire forces people to retreat. The south wind is blowing, and it is just right to attack. The fireproof masks of the fighters were roasted and deformed. After the battle, the warrior's face hardened, and after three days began to peel, which was a burn caused by thermal radiation. Heat can travel great distances through infrared. The road to the fire site was roasted by the heat radiation, and the waves bulged up. The foam hits the oil fire, blooms like a flower, and drifts away with the wind.
Wang Changchuan stared at the oil tank and the soldier, thinking that I must bring the soldier home safely. If the warrior is sacrificed, I am still alive, and I will not be able to live for the rest of my life. Whether I live or die, I want to be with the fighters, Wang Changchuan said.
