(10) Carpal tunnel syndrome

When the volume of carpal tunnel contents increases, it causes relative stenosis of the carpal tunnel, causing specific chronic inflammatory changes in the tendons of the superficial flexor and extensor digitorum muscles. It occurs when the gap in the carpal tunnel is reduced due to various causes, causing the median nerve to be compressed by other tissues.

Symptoms of median nerve compression such as paresthesia, numbness, tingling, and severe at night are initially present. Symptoms are more pronounced when the temperature of the hands increases. Symptoms worsen after exertion and occasionally radiate upward to the arms and shoulders.

1. Methods and steps

See Figure 2-2-10.

Figure 2-2-10 Massage for carpal tunnel syndrome

(1) The patient is seated, and the thumb and fingertips of the surgeon are used as the focus point to push and rub the forearm of the affected side, as shown in this figure (1).

(2) The patient takes a sitting position, and the surgeon gently rubs the acupoints on the affected side such as Xiaohai, Quchi, Shousanli, Neiguan, Shenmen, and Hegu with his thumb, as shown in this figure (2).

(3) The patient is seated and the affected limb is relaxed. The surgeon pinched the upper arm of the affected side with the thumbs, esophagus, middle and ring fingers of both hands, and pushed and kneaded along the Taiyin Lung Meridian, Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Yin Pericardial Meridian of both hands for 3~5 minutes, as shown in this figure (3).

(4) The patient takes a sitting position, and the affected limb and arm are relaxed and abducted naturally. The surgeon stands on the side of the patient, fixes the patient's wrist with both hands, and shakes slightly vigorously for 1~3 minutes, as shown in this figure (4).

2. Precautions

(1) Patients with this disease are usually caused by the prolonged back extension of the wrist, and should pay attention to posture adjustment. Keep your wrists in cold water as little as possible.

(2) After working for a long time or moving the forearm and wrist, you should take a proper rest for 5~10 minutes.

(3) In case of fracture or sprain, symptomatic treatment should be given in time to prevent sequelae.

(4) During the shaking treatment, the force should not be too strong, the frequency should not be too fast, and the wrist joint and upper limbs should feel relaxed and comfortable.
