Chapter 39: Sewers
As the night wore on, the streets of the slums, with the exception of beggars sleeping on the streets and a few drunkards with their mouths full of alcohol, were deserted by pedestrians, and the barking of wild dogs could be heard from the corners of dark alleys and garbage heaps.
The dark night pulls down the dark curtain. For those living in the slums, the nightlife is a far cry from that of most of them, after all, many people have the habit of going to bed early and waking up early, and the next morning they have to be busy and running around for a day's work, and the financial cost of getting in and out of entertainment venues is a huge amount of money.
The sewer area of Twilight connects the underground of the major urban areas.
Armed with a list of tasks issued by the Adventurers' Guild, the patrol guards on duty at night did not question or embarrass the adventurous team of Urs, Thea, and Groeldon.
It didn't take much effort, but the three people, led by the young man, quickly uncovered a manhole cover by the side of the road and descended the ladder below to a dimly lit brick floor.
The soles of the shoes under your feet immediately conveyed the hardness of the stone bricks and the slippery touch of viscous liquid, and the stench that was difficult to describe in words came to your nose.
"Uh...... This place is so dirty. The wolf ears on top of Thea's head softened weakly.
She held back a retching feeling of nausea in her throat, thinking that the mage's "air purification" spell would definitely come in handy in this place, and then lifted the Holy Emblem Prayer Spell in her hand, and cast the magical light source generated by the Light Spell and attached it to her Holy Emblem bracelet.
The bright light immediately dispelled the darkness around them.
This section of the sewer is relatively wide, and the structure of the whole scene is like an arched underground tunnel, with artificial stone brick banks on both sides of the tunnel, and a dark river with foul water flowing quietly, and the surface of the river is floating with rotting rat carcasses and various garbage residues, and the stench that permeates the air is obviously the source.
Gloledon pinched his nose, as if he had not been accustomed to a feeling in the past, and gave a thumbs up to Urs and Thea pointing in the direction of his side: "Go this way?" β
"You've been here before?" Urs asked him.
"I've been here eight years ago, and I may remember a lot of the road." The old thief hooked the corners of his mouth meaningfully.
The young man thought about it and agreed to his proposal.
Over the next few minutes, the team of three made their way in the direction suggested by Gloriden, and the surrounding sections of the road looked like they had come from.
But as time passed, a few squeaky mice scattered in front of the field of vision.
"Urs, Grolayden, look aheadβ"
Thea raised her finger in a daze, the diseased blood of the half-beast gave her a certain degree of dim vision, allowing her to see farther than ordinary people in low-light environments.
She could faintly see several silhouettes of human figures in the darkness.
ββ¦β¦ Don't be afraid, I know what that is. β
Glorydon paused for a second, then confidently reassured her, and guided the young men and girls behind him to discover a group of ragged sleepers, as well as some things piled up around them, such as dirty linen for flooring, and old crockpots for moldy bread.
"These scrawny creatures are as dry as living corpses out of coffins, they are real beggars in the slums, not to mention the stables that shelter them from the rain, they can't even sleep in the open alleys and near the garbage dumps, and they hide in the sewers every night to avoid being chased away by the guards."
The old thief gave Urs and Thea a brief introduction to what he knew, the gray beads rolled in his eyes, and then he walked slowly to the ear of a beggar and unhurriedly pulled out a copper coin from his body.
He let go of his fingers.
The sleeping beggar seemed to be sensitive to the sound of metal falling to the ground.
The beggar was awakened by Gloriden's actions, and when he opened his eyes, he saw a copper coin that had fallen to the ground, and reflexively reached out to grab it, and then found a pair of feet in leather boots on the side of the copper coin.
"You are?" He lifted his gaze up from his leather boots.
"You don't have to know who I am." Gloriden lowered his voice and put his index finger in front of his mouth, "Keeping the gap between us and us is good, isn't it?" β
As he spoke, he took out a second copper coin from his body and deliberately shook it in his hand towards the other party.
In Twilight City, a copper coin can buy a low-quality black loaf, a low-level food mixed with wood chips in flour that can barely be eaten after being roasted over a fire or soaked in water, and can be used as a lesser-than-lethal tabula rasa club weapon in a pinch.
The beggar who woke up was unsurprisingly attracted by the second copper coin in his hand.
A flash of greed flashed in the other party's eyes, but he quickly noticed the dagger on the strap of the old thief's thigh, the short sword at his waist and the crossbow hanging upside down, and after hesitating for a moment, he decided not to wake the others first, and then also asked in a low voice, "What do you want to know?" β
"My companion and I heard that there was a quiet area near the sewers." Glorydon gestured to the side with his eyes, "Tell us everything you know, such as where that area is and what is there." β
"You ...... Adventurer? The beggar turned his head to look at Urs and Thea.
"It's none of your business."
Glorydon calmly admonished him.
Dealing with strangers he doesn't know and protecting the information security of himself and his team is a habit he has developed over the years.
The beggar in the sewer glanced at the young man and the girl, and out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Gloridon's face, and after a while, he replied, "Follow this road to the end." β
"Does it mean that you don't have to turn a corner?" The old thief carefully confirmed.
"Yes, there are one or two forks in between, don't worry about it. Once you're done, you'll have to watch out for the monsters that have recently been infesting there. β
"Monsters? What kind of monster, can you elaborate? β
"This ......"
"Relax, think about your options, maybe you can get more."
After a pause, Glorydon tossed the second coin into the beggar's palm, and after a few seconds, he pulled the third coin out of his body.
However, this time, instead of shaking the third copper coin in front of the opponent's eyes, he grabbed the small coin and slammed it on the hilt of a short sword that had been sheathed at his waist.
The value of a few copper coins is of little use to him, but in the hands of the struggling at the bottom of society, it is equivalent to a few meals to fill the stomach, and as for valuing life, it is almost everyone's innate instinct.
Reward and threat go hand in hand.
"Okay, I'll try to think about it." The beggar swallowed his throat and quickly changed his words.
