Chapter Twenty-Six: A Mountain of Scorched Corpses
I rode the lizard and ran unscrupulously past the tall and dangerous creatures.
They cocked their long, long, drooping noses, and their keen sense of smell immediately made them aware of my presence, and one by one they turned their heads to look at me, and then let out a low, shrill cry of the wild, running after me.
These green giants walk upright, but their upper bodies look a bit hunched because of their drooping shoulders. Their stride is very irregular, their arms swing with them as they run, and they drag them to the ground from time to time. As funny and clumsy as it may seem, it's actually very agile and fast.
They're trolls! They are cousins of the water trolls I fought at Modong Lake, but unlike their aquatic brethren, they don't have an effect on movement on land, and they don't need to submerge most of their bodies in water to regenerate. Because of the "regeneration" ability that can be used at any time, trolls are bold and conceited when fighting, and are not afraid of any attack damage, and are not afraid of death at all. Much more dangerous than a water troll on land.
Originally, it was intended to lure them with food like the one against the water trolls in Modong Lake, but it seems that it is not needed. A dark elf riding a lizard, appearing in the confines of a troll colony that lacks other living creatures, is the best lure in itself. Well, maybe they don't care about the kind of creature that runs away in front of them, all they care about is whether the creature can satisfy their appetite.
I drove the lizards deeper into the troll colony, followed by more and more trolls, their long, staggering figures in front of me and in all directions.
It's not enough, try to elicit more!
The lizard ran around to avoid the trolls, making a big noise around the vault. Seeing that they were slowly surrounding me, I thought that the effect of seducing them was almost the same, so I ran to the huge cave where I had prepared before. But many of the trolls were already close to me, and when the lizard rode by, they stretched out their long arms with sharp claws to stop me, and on several occasions they almost caught me. I could only duck as far as I could to dodge and drive the lizard rider to break through quickly. With a slight delay, it's terrible to put these guys in the loop.
Of course, even if I was surrounded, I would be able to use the levitation technique to lift me and the lizard to the top of the vault, and then escape with the ability to ride the lizard to fly through the wall. But that undermined my previous efforts.
After I stood out from the encirclement, I asked the lizard rider to slow down and trot instead, because the previous run had consumed a lot of the lizard's physical strength, so it was necessary to let it recover properly, and there would be a place to use it later. Second, I don't want the many followers behind me to be unable to keep up, although the lizard and I seem to be quite attractive to the trolls, but I'm afraid I won't find them if I really get rid of them.
Run all the way into the giant cave. I let the lizard run up the steep innermost slope, and before it was about to approach me, I cleared it and stopped a few meters from the platform where the big barrel was kept, and turned around and waited.
The die-hard trolls chased in, and now they were in a long line.
Trolls flocked to climb the steep slope. Stretching out his arms and clawing at me and the lizard, trying to catch us.
Luckily, the slope gets steeper the higher you go, and the sticky meat pads on the lizard's feet allow me to walk nimbly on the ceiling with it on my back, not to mention the steep slope. Trolls don't have that ability, they stretch out their claws and scratch around in vain, trying to climb up, but easily slipping down.
But as the number of trolls gathered at the bottom of the slope increased, some of the later trolls climbed onto their companions in front of them, using them as steps to climb up the slope like arhats.
I drew my +1 sword and slashed the fingers, elbows, and heads of the trolls as I crawled up with all my might, while directing the lizard to attack with its sharp claws. But it was difficult to get the trolls clutching the ground out of their place, and they didn't seem to feel pain, unconcerned about the damage they were doing.
Even if I finally knocked one down and fell. Before I could catch my breath, another troll took his place.
The riding lizard also let out a "hiss" cry in anger, suddenly took a step back, and threw out its big tail with great force, hitting a troll in front of it, and falling backwards like a green onion.
Good! It worked. I commanded the lizard to flick its tail in succession, knocking down the trolls that were about to climb up.
However, this trick is also physically demanding. After beating down several trolls in a row, a tail flick of the riding lizard hit a troll's head, but it failed to knock it down, and it was almost caught by its claws......
The trolls under the slope were crowded like canned sardines, and they were overlapping layer by layer, and I don't know if there were dozens or hundreds, but I am afraid that all the trolls in this dome have come. I looked at the entrance to the cavern, and there were no new trolls coming along.
It's time, and the lizard rider and I won't be able to last much longer.
I commanded the lizard to turn and run to the top of the slope, running straight past the large barrel on the platform, stopping and turning.
I tugged at the corners of my mouth and smiled coldly at the trolls scrambling to climb up. Command the rider to flick its tail vigorously......
The giant tail of the riding lizard knocks the barrel over and rolls it down the slope. Along the way, he smashed the trolls that climbed up.
By the time the barrel fell to the bottom of the slope, it had broken apart, and the liquid inside was sprinkled on every troll...... The strong smell of lamp oil fills the air.
I pulled out a small flat bottle from my body's pocket. It was a bottle of fiery gel, a sticky substance made of alchemy that spontaneously combusted when exposed to air.
The flask slashed in a graceful arc and landed in the middle of the dense trolls, bursting into flames.
In a scream of pain, the boiling oil quickly brought deadly fire to each troll.
Trolls are not afraid of swords or hammers. Injuries cut at them will heal immediately, and even severed heads will grow back immediately. There are many rumors about the troll's ability to regenerate. A troll in a cage with reinforced iron bars bites off its limbs and squeezes them out of the middle of the bars, only to flee when the limbs grow back, leaving only its discarded limbs in the cage.
Another rumor is that a boy escaped by biting off a piece of meat from the hand of a troll who was about to grab him and swallowing his stomach, although he escaped being hunted by the troll at the time, but soon after, the piece of troll meat he swallowed grew into a new troll in his stomach and tore the boy's body apart and ran out.
Of course, the latter rumor is clearly exaggerated. In fact, if a troll grows its lost parts, the original broken parts will dry up and rot, and no more trolls will grow. And there is stomach acid in the stomach, and the acid will cause non-regenerative damage to trolls. Another type of damage that can nullify a troll's "regeneration" ability is fire.
Interestingly, the skin of trolls on land is more likely to catch fire than water trolls that inhabit water. Coupled with the speed of the lamp oil, the fire spread quickly. The trolls who tried to escape couldn't make it out of the hole, and more trolls burned to death at the bottom of the slope, and the charred corpses piled up on top of each other to form a small hill.
