Act IV: Slaying the imp
It's been a month since Career Certification Day, and every day has been normal for Hallester and Rheinland. Every day, they get up early to go to the city and return to the village at night. On the way back to the village, if you see weeds in the fields, you will stop and pull them out. The only thing to add a little color to their lives is to peek at those delicate-skinned girls in the city.
The two of them didn't go to town today because something happened in the village.
The dozens of people in the village had basically arrived, and a dozen strong young men with firewood knives surrounded a dilapidated thatched hut, and the women and old people stood in the distance and watched.
The hour was still early, and the fog in the air had not completely dissipated, and I could only vaguely see the sad expressions on the faces of the villagers.
The villager, who lived in the fenced-up thatched hut, was a bachelor named Kerry, who until yesterday was active in the fields.
"When we came back last night, Uncle Kerry was still eating with his pipe in his mouth at the door?" Rhine remembers that when they came back in the middle of the night yesterday, Kerry sat in the doorway and smiled at them.
"Well, it happened in the middle of the night." Harrester touched the scabbard behind his back, he hadn't touched it in a long time.
"Has the gate been lost?" Rhine also tightened the sword in his hand, his brow furrowed.
"Probably not, otherwise it wouldn't have been a person who died yesterday." Harrester put the sword back in its sheath and walked in the direction of the back mountain.
"What are you doing in the back mountains?" Rhein followed Harrest.
"The back mountain is sparsely populated, and the lonely demon clan is likely to go there." Harrest's words were sinister.
The two teenagers went to the back hill alone without anyone noticing, while the young men set the hut on fire with torches and burned it along with half of Kerry's body.
The city of Ota was still so clean, the girls and their wives had gotten up early to go to the market to buy groceries, and the vendors had already begun to shout and sell.
Issa, the lord of the city, got up early, and his wife and daughter got up as early as he did.
There were three people seated at a long court-style table.
Issa, the lord of the city, sat in the elder seat and looked at a parchment scroll.
Mrs. Karin carefully filled the cup with hot milk for Issa.
Her daughter, Ihiro, was enjoying the high-quality ham and fresh fruit served by the maid.
"Father, if you don't drink milk, it'll be cold!" Yi Xun held his chin in one hand and amethyst grapes in the other, tilting his head and complaining to his father.
"It's good to warm up the milk when it's cold, my father is on business, don't bother him!" Karin glanced sideways at her daughter, then sat down and began to enjoy a luxurious breakfast.
Issa kept staring at the parchment roll, silent.
In the eyes of his daughter, Ihiro, her father is a fair leader who deals with a lot of work every day and worries about the lives of the city's residents. His father was a hero in his heart, not only allowing her and her mother to live such a privileged life, but also arranging the residents of the city in an orderly manner.
Issa had in her hand a list of taxes for the month, and unlike the villagers, who paid them quarterly, the vendors' taxes were paid monthly.
Issa looked at this month's bill with a bad face. There are a lot of vendors who are in arrears this month, and many of them have moved out secretly.
"Chief Guard! Go tell those traders who haven't paid their taxes yet, get out of the way if you don't want to sell things, and those who evade, owe taxes, and delay taxes will be arrested and put in the dungeon! Issa, the lord of the city, suddenly threw the list on the table and commanded outside the door.
"Yes!" Immediately, there was an answer from outside the door.
Izukun was taken aback by his father's actions. "Those damn vendors, who can't thank my father for selling things in the city, and always think about defaulting on taxes, hurt me to be affected by my father's wrath!" The girl hated those vendors who didn't know the rules.
Izumi blamed the residents for his father's anger and was convinced that it was the residents who were in arrears of taxes.
Harrester and Rhine searched along the back hill and soon found traces of the imp.
"The low-level demon clan still doesn't have enough IQ, and if you pick up all the plants and trees along the way, are you afraid that we won't find him?" Rhine looked at the sudden appearance of a passage in the dense bushes, and smiled bitterly.
"Speed up, if you run into the depths, you won't be able to find it." Harrest cut off the bushes in his path and rushed forward. Because the little ghost helped them clear the way, the two of them traveled very fast.
After marching for about half an hour, the two sides met in a bush, and they met as expected.
The little ghost is pitch black and has scales on its body, about the size of the teenagers. Hallrest had just seen this imp in that Demon Illustrated Book, a juvenile form of the Scales. This type of imp is characterized by its firm skin and thick flesh, and its natural nature is relatively stable. They generally feed on wild animals, but occasionally attack humans.
It is generally impossible for this flightless race to pass through the giant gate, and this should be a prisoner used as a coolie when the giant gate is closed.
The eyes of the imp are similar to those of a human being, and they can also express expressions. At first, he panicked when he saw Harrest and Rhine. But seeing that no one was following behind, the panicked expression disappeared and he turned to show excitement.
"Looks like he's hungry," Rhine said helplessly.
"When he ate half of Uncle Kerry's body, he was even hungrier than he is now, what kind of fear did Uncle Kerry accept at that time?" Harrest held the steel sword and pressed towards the imp step by step.
The demons have a unique physical advantage, and adults may not be the opponents of this little ghost, so of course the little ghost will not put the two teenagers in front of him into his eyes. The pitch-black imp screamed, picked up a stone, and slashed it directly at Hallest's head. With a relaxed tilt, the imp's stone whistled past his ears, and the boy was already close to the imp.
The imp reacted quickly, grabbing Harrest's shoulder and biting down on his neck. But when the imp's bloody mouth touched Hallest's neck, it couldn't do anything. After a few struggles, the imp finally collapsed to the ground.
The thick skin of the Scales couldn't stop Harrest's thrust, and the steel sword had easily pierced through his heart.
The scales of this imp are hard and can be processed into trinkets that can be sent to the bounty guild for money. Hallrest took the imp by the hand, ready to drag him back to the village.
Rhein looked at Harrest's back and suddenly felt strange, he knew that Harrest was brave, but he didn't know that he could also kill decisively.
"Harrest, are you so fierce?" Rhine didn't know what to say, so he had to talk half-jokingly.
"Huh? I just did the right thing, this imp killed someone, so he owes the dead a life. Hallester looked back at Rhein. You're not scared, are you? ”
"Hmph...... How is it possible, isn't it just to kill a demon, and when I fight in the future, it will be a day to watch the dead pile up. Rhine feigned disdain.
The two went down the mountain and did not bring the demon's body to the town. Instead, they burned it with the villagers. Legend has it that this brings peace to the souls of the dead.
The villagers were pleased that the two teenagers had learned this skill, but criticized them for acting impulsively. For the elders' teachings, Harrest and Rhine humbly accepted them, after all, the elders also thought about their safety. Xue Ji was relieved to see the two children who were safe and sound, and then reminded them to pay attention to safety and not be reckless.
Rhein: "Hallest, do you think we're doing the right thing?" ”
Hallest: "Why do you ask?" ”
Rhine: "We'll kill the imps, and Uncle Kerry won't be able to come back to life." If we chase it out like this, we may put ourselves in danger."
Hallest: "If you don't kill them, the imps may come back and attack the villagers again." ”
Rheinland: "That's right! It's also a scourge for this kind of demon to keep. ”
Hallest: "I know what you're worried about, don't worry, it's fine." ”
Rhine: "I can't hide anything from you......"
Hallest: "By the way, would you like to go to the Giant Gate?" ”
Rhine: "Why do you suddenly ask this?" ”
Hallest: "I just wanted to check it out." ”
Rheinland: "When do you leave?" ”
Hallest: "Prepare tomorrow day, set off the day after tomorrow." ”
Rhine: "Okay, let's go together." ”
