Chapter 32: March Madness
After finishing the second stage of the regular season, Villanova University unfortunately finished second in the Great Eastern Conference by half a win, but that doesn't mean they can't reach the National Championship as the Great Eastern Conference champions, after all, the regular season has an even more brutal and decisive third stage.
As long as Villanova University takes out the rest of its competitors in the third stage, which is the Division League Championship, it will be a sure thing to make it to the National Championship, regardless of the selection committee.
Villanova's final record behind Boston University is entirely due to the fact that they lost too many games in the regular season in the Interdivisional Conference, but Villanova has a high win rate against other teams in the same league, and they have nothing to fear from any team in the Great East Conference, including Boston University.
Sure enough, Villanova University, which was holding back its strength, slaughtered all sides in the divisional league tournament and rushed to the end in one go. After a narrow 78-75 win over Boston University, they became Great Eastern Conference champions and qualified for the 1996-97 NCAA National Championship.
Chang Wei is very satisfied with the team's breakthrough into March Madness, and now he has a lot of say in the team, and after the season, he can recommend some guys to Rappers who will be strong in the future but not well-known. And if the team can do well in the national championship, it will help recruit those high school stars who have already made a name for themselves, so that the team can go far in the new season.
At this time, it is necessary to popularize the so-called March Madness, that is, the NCAA National Championship.
The reason why the national championship is called March Madness is largely because of the winner-or-lose format, where the winning team immediately advances at the end of each game, and the losing team has to pack up and go home. The brilliance of the NCAA lies in their ability to select the best 68 teams each year, and to put out a brilliant game bracket that makes the game very enjoyable and suspenseful.
So how were these 68 teams chosen? In general, there are two formats, with 32 divisional league champions selected directly and the remaining 36 teams selected by the NCAA Basketball Tournament Selection Committee.
The NCAA has 1,281 member colleges and universities at three divisions, and its highest division, Division I, has 351 member colleges and universities with basketball programs, and they are part of the 32 NCAA Division I divisional leagues with basketball leagues. Having the champions of each of the 32 divisional leagues advance directly to the round of 68 ensures that at least one team from each league will be selected for the national championship, and since most of the divisional leagues in the United States are based on geography, this means that the tournament will feature teams from all regions of the country. This has established the huge influence of the event in the United States.
The NCAA has a selection committee for each year's basketball tournament. The selection committee is made up of ten athletic directors from 10 of the most athletic universities in the United States, who typically serve five-year terms and are recognized for their high level of knowledge of the strength of all college teams in their respective divisional leagues and NCAA Division I, and are required to keep a close eye on the regular season performance of teams throughout NCAA Division I.
This part of the quota is referred to as the "invitation quota". Invitations are based on a number of factors such as the team's record, form, division, and more. Every year after the regular season, the strong teams will lock in the invitation spots, and some teams with decent strength and marginal records are called "bubble teams". The result of the invitation will be announced on "Select Sunday". For many teams with little chance of getting an invitation and teams from weaker divisions, winning the division is the only possibility of participating in the national championship.
The decision on the round of 68 is also very particular, and all teams will be divided into 4 divisions, namely East, West, Central West, and Southeast Division, with 17 teams in each division. In order to ensure that the competition is intense and that the best teams do not meet each other in the early stages of the knockout round, the selection committee will divide the four seeded teams that they believe to be the strongest in the country into four different regions.
Before the official start of the tournament, the last two teams from each region play the first round of matches, which are played at the same venue, and then the 16 teams will face each other in order of order, i.e. No. 1 seed vs. No. 16 seed, No. 2 seed vs. No. 15 seed, and so on.
After reaching the round of 16, they will take a break for nearly a week and go to another city to continue the round of 16 and the round of 8, which are called the "Sweet 6" and "Elite 8" respectively. In the end, the remaining teams from each region are called the "Final Four" and move to the semi-finals and finals of that year's Final Four. The final four games are the focus of national attention every year, and the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship is the most lucrative sporting event outside of the NFL playoffs (including the Super Bowl), surpassing the NBA and MLB playoffs, and the NBA will take a break to make way for the championship game.
Soon the NCAA National Championship round of 64 was announced, and Villanova was seeded No. 4 in the Eastern Conference, where Jordan's alma mater, the University of North Carolina, was seeded at the top seed. The matchup chart for the round of 64 has been distributed to the teams, Chang Wei didn't know much about the NCAA in his previous life, and he can't confirm whether he has changed the list, but as long as the team breaks into the national championship, the rest depends on the performance in the game!
