Chapter 24: The Omen
Orlan handed Lillian the diary, which belonged to Soldier Heblitz, was in tatters, teared out in places, and stained with blood in other places.
Heblitz's body lay in the cave with a stab in the chest. Observing the size of the wound should have been left by their own soldier longsword. The angle at which the wound cuts indicates that he was killed with his back against the rock wall.
During the battle with Flame Komodo, he was supposed to have injured his leg, and he can be seen having a simple stick fixed to his leg. There are also scars left by sharp blades on his fingers, and it may be that he has no choice but to hold the opponent's blade with his hand when he resists.
The other three bodies were scattered on the ground and seemed to have experienced a battle that was not too fierce. Like the last few paragraphs of Helblitz's diary, could it be that they had some irreconcilable dispute? And then it went to the point of killing.
It stands to reason that the only people who could kill so many sick people were the two able-bodied soldiers, and they were not found among the corpses.
Finally, regarding the "resurrection" of the soldiers mentioned by Herblitz, Oran first thought of the "curse" mentioned by the giant and the giant king. If the soldiers ate something that they shouldn't have eaten, it was not impossible for them to be poisoned and hallucinate, and this was also mentioned in the diary.
Then all you need to do is find the rest of the people or corpses to get the answer.
Not far from the cave, Oran found two bodies that had been buried in the earth. It appears that the two soldiers were the first to die, possibly due to worsening injuries, food poisoning, etc. But at least they still have someone to bury, don't they?
Lying next to him was one of the two soldiers who were still in combat power, with no scars from their weapons, only a wound on their neck that had been bitten and torn by some creature.
It's also worth noting that the one-person-sized pit was supposed to have a body buried in it, but now only half of the pit of dirt remains. Could it be that the dead soldiers have been resurrected again? This can be used as a piece of evidence. Now, there are only two living people left, or two bodies that have not been found.
Orlan chirped a few times over the forest as he learned some kind of bird, and in a moment a small blue bush crow flew over. After a few laps over them, it landed on Oran's shoulder.
Lillian had heard before that true hunters always found a trusted companion in the forest, whether they were leading the way or seeking out enemies. She didn't bother Oran, who was talking to the little bush crow, but just watched curiously as Oran fed the seeds of some kind of vegetation to the little bush crow.
Then the pure blue bird flew up, circled a few times and then left.
"So, it can help us find the rest of us?" Lillian couldn't help but ask.
"Well, but it's also possible that it will lead us to something to eat. It's all about the interest of the little things. ”
However, the results did not disappoint them, and Orlan had already found clues, such as the bloodstained leaf, which was fresh enough to tell if the target had passed for up to two hours.
It's not too far from the caves of Comodo, and this section of the road is not even as far as a normal person's foot, so the goal is to get hurt.
……
"Soldier, stop! I command you to lay down your sword. Lillian said to the figure in the familiar leather armor.
The figure froze in place for a moment, then turned around, it was the face Orlan had seen. He had large and small sword wounds on his body, some of which had even pierced his chest, but he was still standing. But the most striking thing was the laceration in his throat, which was basically the same as the dead soldier.
The soldier swayed and staggered slowly, his eyeballs that had begun to rot without any sign of consciousness. Orlan drew his dagger and handed it to Lillian, who drew his greatsword himself.
When the soldier approached a certain distance, he suddenly burst into footsteps, completely devoid of the rigidity he had just had, and stabbed at the top of his sword with his sword held high. At the same time, behind the trees behind them in Orlan, another soldier came out and pounced!
Lillian strode forward, sword in both hands raised above her head. Deft as he fended off the soldier's stabbing blow, and with a flick of inertia, the soldier's head was sliced off from the back of his head by the blade.
The soldier who pounced from behind Orlan did not even look back to ask for the enemy, and at the same time he turned around, he swung his great sword, and the tip of the sword was so sharp that it cut off the soldier's head, leaving only a blood-bubbling headless corpse that fell with inertia.
The battle had just begun, and it ended when both of them were swordsmanning at the same time.
"Now that everyone is together, what do you think?" Oran asked.
"Both soldiers were apparently living corpses, and had a certain immortality. But it didn't seem to be some simple spell or dark magic, and I couldn't feel the traces of it. ”
"The crux of the matter is that they may still retain some instincts, such as this little 'ambush' just now."
"Giants, are these two soldiers the same resurrected giants we met in the ice fields?"
"It's hard to say, but I don't think it's that simple. I'm more inclined to have some kind of curse at work. From the Giant King, he told me that a curse was coming and something like that, which was puzzling. ”
"Is this a conspiracy of giants? But they themselves have become 'living corpses'. ”
I hope everything is normal when I leave this forest, but I inadvertently think of those crazy wolves, whose symptoms are similar to those of giants and current soldiers. Could it be that the appearance of the mad wolf is a harbinger of the beginning of the curse?
What answer can be obtained by linking the flames, curses, humanity, and resurrection of the giant king's mouth? Oran muttered a few words in his mind.
"I think we need to gather the corpses of these loyal soldiers, at least not let them be eaten by wild beasts." Lillian's expression was a little dark.
"Hmm."
These loyal soldiers, at least they kept their promises at the last moment of their lives. It may be a pity not to be able to die on the journey like William, but it is not a blessing not to die in the mouth of the giants.
Hopefully, from the moment the expedition began, they were prepared to never return to their homeland. There was no salvation in this world, and from the moment he knew that the gods lived in that realm, a lingering haze appeared in a corner of Oran's heart.
That awakened deep in his soul had been calling to him that some unknown and terrible future would come true. The creatures of that world will eventually be twisted into ashes by the burning flames, and it will be a catastrophe that all life must bear.
