Chapter Twenty-Nine: The Test
On the other side, Harry and the others had already passed the three-headed Lu Wei and were continuing to move towards the test. Hermione used the magic she had used to ignite Snape's robes to dispel the first test, the Devil's Web.
They came to the end of the hallway, and in front of them was a brightly lit room with a high vaulted ceiling. Countless small birds that were as brilliant as jewels flapped their wings and flew around the room. There is a heavy wooden door opposite the room.
"Do you think they're going to attack us if we go through the room?" Ron asked, looking at the scene in front of him, and asked Harry.
"Possibly." Harry said after thinking for a moment and said, "They don't seem to be vicious, but if they all rush at once, I'm afraid... Whatever, there's no other way anyway, I'll run over and try it. He took a deep breath, covered his face with his arm, and sped to the other end of the room. He thought that at any moment there would be a sharp mouth and claws to tear him apart, but he was safe. Unscathed, he came to the door and pulled the handle, which was locked.
Seeing that Harry was fine, Ron and Hermione followed. They had used the Alaho Cave Spell several times against the locked gate, but to no avail, and the gate remained locked.
"These birds, they look so strange, they don't attack us, but I don't think they're meant to be decorative." Hermione said. The three watched as the little birds flew overhead, shining—shining?
"They're not birds at all!" Harry stared at the little winged creatures flying in the air for a moment before exclaiming, "They're the keys!" The key with wings - look closely. ”
Harry looked around the room, while Ron and Hermione stared up at the flying swarm of keys.
"There you have, you see! Broomsticks! We've got to go up and grab the key to that door!" Harry was delighted to find the broomstick, and he found a way to clear the level.
"But there are hundreds of keys on there!" While a little unconvinced that Harry could find the right key in the stack, Ron took a closer look at the door and guessed, "We're looking for a big antique key - probably silver, shaped like a doorknob." ”
Harry inherited his father's Quidditch talent and was adept at finding flying targets. After a minute of weaving through the swirls of small, colorful wings, he noticed a large silver key dangling its wings, as if it had once been grabbed and crudely stuffed into the keyhole.
After making up their minds, Harry and the others worked together to surround the key. Ron dived down, Hermione leaped upward, the key dodging to avoid their up and down, Harry following closely behind.
The key flew swiftly towards the wall, and Harry lunged forward, slamming it against the stone wall with one hand with a piercing creak.
Ron and Hermione's cheers echoed through the high room. They landed quickly, and Harry ran towards the door, the key still struggling in his hand. He shoved it into the keyhole and twisted it hard – yes, it was.
The key flew away after opening the door, and the three of them looked at each other and opened the door directly.
The second room was pitch black and nothing could be seen. But as soon as they stepped inside, the room suddenly became brightly lit, illuminating a shocking scene. They stood on the edge of a huge chessboard, with black pieces in front of them, all taller than each of them, as if carved out of something like a black stone. At the other end of the room, facing them, were white chess pieces. Harry, Ron, and Hermione trembled with fear—none of the towering white chess pieces had facial features on their faces.
Ron quickly recognized that it was Wizard Chess. One of his favorite entertainments. The door to clear the level is blocked behind the white chess pieces. They must eliminate these white pieces in order to clear the level.
He walked up to a black knight and reached out and touched his horse. Immediately, the stone came to life, the horse scraped the earth with its hooves, and the knight turned his helmeted head and looked at Ron. "Do we—um—have to come with you to get there?" The Black Knight nodded. Ron turned to Harry and Hermione and said, "I think we need to think about it," he said, "I'm afraid we'll have to replace the three black pieces here." Harry and Hermione didn't speak, watching Ron ponder.
Although Harry and Hermione had tried their hand at wizarding chess, they were far from Ron when they were. Although Ron's chess skills are not much better.
Ron takes the place of a knight on the chessboard and takes command. Harry took the place of the Bishop, and Hermione stood by Harry's side in the place of the castle.
Just as the three of them entered the board, the white pieces began to move, and a white pawn moved forward two squares. Ron began to command the black chess. Harry and Hermione silently obeyed him. But Harry's knees were shaking. What if they lose? He remembered the rules of wizard chess very well. The fate of the captured pawn is very miserable.
"Harry—move four squares to the front right." It was only when another of their knights was eaten that they began to really feel the fear. The White Queen violently knocked the knight to the floor and dragged him off the board. He lay face down, motionless.
"No way, just like that," Ron said, looking helpless, "There's no way to eat the bishop." Hermione, go ahead. "Every time their pieces are captured, the white pieces are ruthless and merciless. Soon, a large number of lifeless black chess pieces fell to the wall. On two occasions, thanks to Ron, who discovered Harry and Hermione's critical situation in time, managed to save them from the siege. Ron himself charged on the board, taking almost as many self-pieces as they had lost.
"It's going to be over in a minute." He suddenly whispered, "Let me think about it," and the White Queen turned her featureless face to him. "Yes," Ron whispered, "it seems that this is the only way, I must be eaten." ”
"No way!" Harry and Hermione shouted at the same time as Ron's words were heard.
"It's a game of chess!" Hearing the opposition of the two, Ron snapped, "There is always some sacrifice to be made!" If I take a step forward, she'll eat me, but you'll check the king to death, Harry!"
"But ......"
Just as Harry was about to refute Ron's words, Ron had already made up his mind and took the initiative to take a step forward.
