Chapter 41: The Miracle of the Future

An ordinary two-story log cabin on a Kansas farm is smoking at the moment. A slightly chubby, middle-aged woman is busy with a big meal for their son, who doesn't come home very often, and his friends.

She's Martha. Kent, Clark. Kent's adoptive mother. God did not give her a child who was related to her by blood, but sent the most unique child in the world to her.

"Martha, what else do you need to prepare?"

It was her husband, Jonathan, who was standing at the back of the house shouting loudly into the house.

Looking at the dinners that had been prepared, Martha felt that as an authentic American, she had to have some apple pie after dinner.

"Bring me a few more apples!"

Martha answered her husband's question aloud.

Looking at the table full of food, she couldn't help but think back to the first time the boy had told them that his friend would come to visit in a few days, and that time they had been in the same hurry as this time when they had been preparing all kinds of things.

A friend of the newspaper? A colleague at work? Or other like-minded friends you've made new in the Met? Clark's peculiar status makes it difficult for him to have some real friends. Although every time he came back, he would talk about interesting things about his work in the metropolis, or some unhappy things, and there were people who could be considered friends, such as the photographer named Jim, but this was the first time he had friends to visit.

Then the limousine, which was completely out of tune with the country town, drove into their garage in the eyes of everyone.

The man in a haute couture suit got out of the car like a perfect prince and greeted Clarke, then came over to greet her.

Oh yes, she kept staring at him, and Jonathan was jealous.

Bruce. Wayne, the man he had never seen on television, stepped into their home for the first time that day.

The man was completely different from the impression he had on TV, he didn't have such a pompous smile, and he wasn't a cynical playboy, but rather a polite gentleman.

They were stunned to learn that the man had a double secret identity like Clark. There's no way to connect the man on TV with a playful smile to the man he hears about the Gotham Nights lore from Clark's mouth. Jonathan has always looked at these capitalists unpleasantly, but that day he also looked at Bruce completely differently, and personally cooked his best roast chicken for him to eat.

And the child he brought, also different from the mature and sophisticated appearance on TV, is a very lively child, very curious about everything on the farm, completely unstoppable and active, he also has a dual identity - Robin.

Later, he was replaced by Robin, a little boy who was not very talkative, not so lively but equally curious, a good boy who would help out in the kitchen, and this child had an accident.

When she learned the news, she couldn't believe it. What a blow the man would have been, and the look he had at the two children was familiar to her, the same as Jonathan had looked at Clark.

When Clark offered to bring Bruce over for a break, she agreed without thinking.

"What are you thinking?"

When Jonathan walked in with the apple Martha needed, he saw his wife in a daze facing a boiling pot.

“... I'm just thinking, do you think he's going to be able to come out? ”

Jonathan knew who Martha was referring to, a question that no one could answer.

“... There are many things that can only be done by himself, and others are powerless, not even Superman"

"I know... You say a good child...."

“... It's not anyone's fault, it's just a prank of fate..."

Jonathan pulled his wife to stop her crankiness, Bruce didn't come much, but he liked both of the two children he brought with him, too.

The kid's accident was something that no one wanted, but it just happened, and it left an irreversible result.

There was a commotion from upstairs, interrupting the sadness of the two men.

"I've told him how many times I've walked through the door, really. Clarke! ”

Jonathan walked out of the kitchen dissatisfied, shouting at the room upstairs where there was movement.

"Change your clothes and come down, Daddy!"

Clark's title caused Martha to snicker, and when he knew that he was just their adoption, Clark didn't call them dad and mom very much. But as long as he makes a harmless little mistake, he will call Jonathan's father, so that Jonathan's anger in his stomach has nowhere to go. I don't know who I learned this trick from.

Clark quickly walked downstairs, and Bruce followed him silently.

Seeing Bruce's appearance, Martha realized that Clark's concerns were not unfounded. Somewhat worried, he walked over and gave him a hug.

"I'm fine"

"But you don't look good at all"

Martha didn't pretend to lose sight of Bruce's stubbled chin, nor did she ignore the dark circles around the blue eyes, perhaps because Clarke's clothes were a little too big for Bruce, and she felt that Bruce was much thinner than she remembered.

Martha's words made Bruce pause, and everyone around him had tried to avoid mentioning things he didn't want to mention, and this was the first time anyone had directly refuted his words.

"Come, eat"

Jonathan beckoned everyone to sit down to avoid the invisible embarrassment in the air.

There was an awkward scene at the dinner table, and although Clark pulled him over strongly, he really didn't know what to say. Jonathan was not good at saying comforting words, and the father and son sat facing each other, silently burying their heads in bitterness.

Martha kept chattering about things in the town, things on the farm, what was too much rain in the past few years, the crops were not very good, who lost a horse a few days ago, and everyone couldn't find it for a long time. They suspected that the guys who had been here a while ago had done it, but there was no evidence. and the daughter-in-law of the neighbor White have been due for several days, and this is their third child. Having said this, Clark suddenly felt that something was not good, and sure enough, the next second Martha's words turned to him:

"Clark, you're not too young, bring a girl back next time, I think the girl who appeared on TV with you last time was pretty good"

Martha was talking about Louis, to which Clark chose to remain silent.

"Look at you, as soon as you say this, you don't say anything."

Bruce looked at Martha and reprimanded Clarke, who was silent, and unconsciously remembered that he had been taught by Ah Fu like this, and I don't know if older people are worried about the same thing.

What saved Clark's ears was a sharp knock on the door. Martha oddly stood up and went to open the door. Clark expanded his hearing curiously, what had happened in this peaceful town that he knocked on the door so anxiously.

Soon Martha hurried back again, found all kinds of gauze from the cupboard, and some things that I didn't know what to do with them, and hurried out.

"What happened?"

Jonathan and Bruce looked at Clark, who might know something.

"Uh..... It seems that White's daughter-in-law is suddenly about to give birth, but the rest of White's family is not here today."

Wow, this is bombshell news, the three big men hurriedly followed, and just as they walked to White's house, they heard the painful moans of the mother. The three big men stood outside the door at a loss, watching Masha and another woman busy inside.

"Well, why don't I take her to the hospital?"

Clark finally took the time to ask Martha, and Martha glared.

"Do you want a mother to give birth to a baby in the air? Foolish"

"Didn't you call the hospital?"

Bruce asked worriedly.

"It's been beaten, they sent an ambulance, but this is suddenly about to give birth, and it may not be able to hold on to the car...."

Martha stopped in the middle of her sentence to look at Bruce, and then dragged him into the makeshift delivery room without saying a word.

"You help hold her hand, don't let her scratch herself"

Bruce didn't react to anything, and a woman's hand was stuffed in his hand. The rough fingers grabbed his hand fiercely, and the force was so strong that people wondered if they were going to tear off a piece of his flesh.

Then Bruce could only stand by the makeshift delivery bed and act as a grab, listening to the woman who helped keep saying "Take a deep breath!" "Hard!" There are also painful cries of mothers.

Just as Bruce wondered if the bones of his hand had been shattered, a loud cry was heard.

"Ha, it's born!"

I don't know who said the news that relieved everyone. When the hand that had been holding him was finally released, Bruce felt numb.

"Are you alright? Bruce"

Clark looked at Bruce's bruised hand with some concern, and after a little perspective, he was relieved that he didn't see anything wrong with the bones.

"Okay, you big men who get in the way, get out of here"

The sound of an ambulance could be heard in the distance, and it was better to leave it to the experts next, and Martha began to chase away some of the idlers who were occupying the space, leaving important space for the incoming professionals.

"What are you looking at?"

Martha was still helping out at White's house, and the three grown men had to go back to Kent's house to continue the unfinished dinner. After dinner, Bruce stood in the same position in their yard looking at the sky.

"Stars"

Unlike Metropolis and Gotham, the night sky of Kansas is densely packed with stars, and there is no huge amount of light pollution, and here you can even see stars with a magnitude of 5 with the naked eye.

Tonight is another clear night sky, and the starry sky shrouds the whole town like a pot lid.

"Give"

Clark handed Bruce a drink, sniffed it and frowned:

"You know I'm not a big drinker."

"It's Jonathan's own mixed fruit wine"

After taking a sip, a fruity aroma of alcohol flowed into my throat, and it tasted a bit like a top-notch wine.

"What are you thinking?"

Seeing Bruce in a daze again made Clark a little curious, because his expression didn't look like he was thinking about Jason.

"It's nothing, I just think it's not easy for a woman to have a baby"

"Yes, in the past, when the medical environment was not very good, it was normal for a woman to die because of childbirth."

Bruce looked at the bruises on his hands, the strength of the woman and the twisted expression of the pain, all of which made him feel some kind of impact.

What is it that sustains this woman to endure so much pain and give birth to a child.

Sensing Bruce's somewhat loose stubbornness at the moment, Clark took the opportunity to say what he had wanted to say for a long time:

"Bruce, Jason is dead, but you're alive, you have to keep going"

"I know"

"Tidy yourself up, and continue to go down with that child's share, there will always be miracles in the future"

"I understand... I understand"
