Chapter Thirty-Four: Batman's New Assistant
"Master Bruce, what are your plans for Master Jason?"
It seems that the child sale case has come to an end, and at least the rest of the matter is all that is left by the police, but the crime in Gotham will not end with the cracking of a case.
There's never a time when Batman can stop and sit in front of his computer as he always used to, continuing to track down the scarecrow and track down new cases.
Alfred stood beside him with a snack plate and asked coldly as he concentrated on analyzing the clues at hand.
"What?"
"May I remind you that in the first place, I decided to send Master Jason to boarding school because he didn't know who you were. Master Bruce"
Alfred's words successfully drew Bruce's attention away from the screen.
Giving Dick into such a dangerous life was something Bruce had always regretted, but there was no other way at the time, and he saw himself in the eyes of the childβthe self full of vengeful rage. He knew that if he didn't give Dick a guide and a way, the boy would run away on his own. Letting a nine-year-old child seek revenge on an underworld with a certain amount of power, the result is obvious, he can't watch that child go to death, so he adopts Dick and raises him to be Robin.
He was glad that Dick had overcome his hatred and had no choice of selfishness, but at the same time, he completely broke the possibility that Dick should have been away from this dangerous life.
"Ah Fu, I don't want to involve a child in this kind of life...."
"Master Bruce, you seem to have misunderstood what I mean, I mean you still intend to limit your relationship with Master Jason to just one patron? Or are you planning to adopt Master Jason? β
Alfred didn't give Bruce any chance to escape, and directly said what he meant.
β... Far away from me, he can grow more safely"
"After he knows who you are?"
"Ah Fu"
"I think Master Jason will teach you how to be a father completely."
Alfred rarely interferes with Bruce's decisions, but he does have his stubbornness and ideas when it comes to certain matters.
Dick's arrival really added a touch of popularity to Bruce's life, and he began to try to learn how to communicate with others normally, rather than the Gotham baby kind of communication. They are nominally father and son, but the age difference is not too big, making them look more like a pair of brothers with a bit of an age gap.
They will have contradictions, like the kind of contradictions between ordinary people, they will quarrel and they will reconcile.
Dick will be so angry with Bruce's stubbornness that he runs away from home, and Bruce will be torn by Dick's rebellion, like an ordinary person's troubles.
That's an experience that Alfred couldn't give Bruce, so he sincerely thanked Dick for coming. But there's one thing Dick can't give to Bruce, and that's letting go of hatred.
Dick shares Bruce's hatred for sin, which becomes their original motivation to deal with Gotham's crimes. Jason is different, even when he is treated like this by his biological father, his attitude towards him is only disgust rather than hatred.
Alfred hopes to convince Bruce to adopt Jason, and he has a hunch that the boy can give Bruce a new attitude to life.
From Jason's attitude, Alfred knew that he really wanted to be the new Robin, that kid's ability to disguise the people he trusted was too low, and that attitude of expectation was obvious enough to infect others, after all, he was still a child............
Alfred knew about Bruce's concerns, and he blamed himself after Dick's injury, so he forbade Dick from being Robin, which was the trigger for Dick to run away from home.....
He didn't want a child to be involved in this kind of life again, but he selfishly hoped that there could be an ordinary child who could help Bruce get back everything that an ordinary person should have........
β.... Jason's father is still alive.."
"You know I'm not talking about that again"
The issue was put on hold, and Alfred could only give Bruce some advice, and the final decision was always in Bruce's hands................
Jason walked aimlessly down the hallway with a cigarette in his mouth, Alfred's question that kept him from reading all day today.
Sometimes Jason would lie in his bed, with an unreal feeling of what was in front of him, so unreal that he couldn't sleep, and when he opened his eyes again when he fell asleep, he would go back to the pile of tattered cardboard boxes..........
He doesn't belong here, he's different from Dick, who was officially adopted by Bruce, but he's not. He's just picked it up by Bruce on a spur of the moment, and occasionally gets involved in a case that Bruce is pursuing, and that's it.........
β.... Too greedy, isn't it? Become the adopted son of the richest man in Gotham or something...."
Jason casually sat on the windowsill of the living room, watching the snowflakes outside flick the cigarette ash into the paper bag in his hand, feeling ridiculous for his inexplicable delusions.
"Bruce? I heard you want Jason to be Robin? β
Barbara's voice came from the hallway, and the woman's shrill voice easily penetrated the heavy wooden door and entered the living room.
"Not Robin"
β..... I'm not against it, but whether it's Robin or whatever, I honestly don't think it's a good idea."
Jason leaned on the door and listened to the conversation outside.
β... Bruce, listen to me, I don't mean anything else and I don't discriminate against Jason's origin, but you have to know that the red-haired and green-eyed are too conspicuous, you can't hide Jason's existence for too long, the ubiquitous paparazzi can easily find out that there will be an extra boy next to you, you have to know that you are a celebrity, at least half of the paparazzi in Gotham live on your news, Gotham baby has adopted a red-haired and green-eyed little boy, and a new Robin with red hair and green eyes has appeared next to Batman at the same time, Anyone with a little brain will associate these two, not to mention that Jason also smokes, and the smell of smoke on his body is so strong that it is easy to spot, I don't think it is a good idea for him to be Robin..."
"I... I can dye my hair."
Before Barbara could finish speaking, Jason pushed open the door to the living room and hurriedly retorted. When he noticed that the eyes of the two people were focused on the cigarette on his right hand at the same time, Y hurriedly added:
"I will also quit smoking..... Whew..."
Bruce looked at Jason, who was busy snuffing out the half-smoked cigarette, and left a "I'll see" before turning away, leaving Jason standing stunned and thinking about the meaning of the sentence.
"So boy, let me see your perseverance, uh-huh~"
Barbara walked over and slapped Jason's skinny shoulder, leaving the sentence before following Bruce's pace.
β... Ha... Hah..."
