Chapter 9: The Gnolls

A crescent moon passed through the thin clouds, and it was already midnight when I looked at the direction.

The militiamen, who patrolled the city walls with torches, had not rested for a whole day, and although the militia had not participated in the battle, they had been busy with all kinds of auxiliary work since the morning, and they did not stop for a moment.

Distributing combat supplies, treating the wounded, managing refugees, and maintaining law and order in the town are not so easy to do, especially the chambers of commerce and the townspeople who are clamoring to leave the city, and negotiating with them is enough to make people anxious.

In the end, the battlefield had to be cleaned, and by the time the corpses on the city walls were disposed of, and the blood and minced flesh that had stuck to the ground were shoveled clean, it was already the dead of night.

Rekan is the captain of the 7th Militia Squad, he is already exhausted, but he still carries out the patrol mission with a strong spirit, and does not dare to relax in the slightest.

He was a native of Banis, who had lived on this land for generations, and this was his homeland, so how could he let his guard down.

Because of his location on the edge of the continent, Barnice hadn't had a war of this magnitude in many years, and it was the first time he had experienced the imminent destruction of his country.

A sad feeling of powerlessness.

Rekan thought as he carefully observed the situation outside the city walls.

Unfortunately, there was no moonlight, and visibility was extremely limited beyond the range of the torches.

There seemed to be some faint fluorescence shaking in the darkness, and he was startled, and threw the torch in his hand with all his might.

The torches arc in the night sky, and the range of the firelight continues to expand.

"Whew!"

A short, sharp sound of breaking wind suddenly sounded, and an iron arrow shot out of the darkness quickly and accurately, and with a "bang" nailed the torch to the city wall in the air, and the swarthy shaft of the arrow was still "buzzing" like a string.

"Enemy attack!"

Lekan screamed, his voice sharp and twisted from nervousness, rippling through the deep night.

His militia shouted loudly and threw torches.

The figures of the enemy were revealed, all of them gnoll men with hideous faces, and the flickering flames illuminated the sparkling fluorescent eyes that were characteristic of the wolves at night.

After being discovered, the Jackal soldiers did not hesitate to charge, extremely fast, and rushed under the city walls in the blink of an eye.

They took their swords in their mouths, took out ropes with anchor-shaped iron hooks, threw them up the city wall, hooked them firmly to the eaves of the stone wall, and climbed towards the wall with great speed.

The panicked militia and the soldiers defending the city rushed forward to release the iron hooks, but the iron hooks were stretched so tightly by the weight of the jackals that they could not be lifted for a moment, and were instead fired with bows and arrows.

The jackal archers were firing their arrows quickly, their bows were longer, more powerful, accurate and ruthless, and as soon as Rykan cut a rope, five or six of the militiamen around him were knocked to the ground.

"Cut the rope!" Lekan yelled in a hurry.

The soldiers reacted and immediately drew their swords to cut the hemp ropes, but unfortunately the city wall was not high, and some of the jackals who fell broke their hands and feet, while others did nothing at all, rolled on the ground a few times, stood up and climbed up, and the soldiers were exposed to the range of the jackal archers, but suffered heavy casualties.

The chaos quickly stretched from the position where Rekan found the enemy to both sides, and the jackal soldiers continued to emerge from the darkness and rush towards the lonely town, and a loud crashing sound was heard in the distance, and the enemy had begun to destroy the city gates, and the town was instantly in danger.

By the time the soldiers had recovered from the chaos, the Jackals had already howled and poured onto the walls.

Gnolls are similar in size to humans, but their bodies are covered in shiny brown fur with black-brown spots the size of wine glasses, their armor is very rudimentary, only protecting their chest and abdomen, and their backs are exposed, a puff of fiery red hair extends from their foreheads to the ends of their spine, their bright colors exude a dangerous aura, they don't wear boots, and their anti-articulation wolf feet make them jump farther and run faster.

The appearance is even more hideous and terrifying, almost like a jackal walking upright, with a fierce green light flashing in its eyes, sharp fangs hanging outside, and a dull beast-like roar in its throat when it breathes, which makes people shudder.

These dangerous species from the continent of Grecia are terrifying even standing there.

Despite all the preparations, Barnes' defense was quickly breached.

Jackals are naturally more ferocious than humans, they are better at fighting, and the advantage of fighting at night is so obvious that ordinary soldiers can't resist it at all.

The city walls turned into a scuffle, and the jackal soldiers constantly broke through the defense line and rushed into the town, colliding head-on with the mercenaries who were about to go up the city wall to support, and immediately killed under the city walls.

When the gnolls approached, a brutal and bloodthirsty aura also rushed to his face, and the first time he faced this dangerous race, Mu Kai's palms broke out in a lot of cold sweat, and he felt that the hilt of the sword was a little slippery.

Kaizhe, who was standing in the back, calmly recited the incantation, and a chilling cold air quickly condensed and formed, wrapping a jackal soldier who was about to rush in front of him, and a layer of hard ice immediately condensed on the jackal soldier's body.

Ice Arrow, which is fast to cast, consumes less mana, and does not cause a lot of movement to attract the attention of the enemy, is a very practical primary magic, and the experienced middle-aged mage knows very well what kind of magic to choose under what circumstances.

The freeze caused the Jackals' movements to become stiff and sluggish, and fine ice chips continued to fall down with a crisp cracking sound, which looked a little comical.

Mu Kai opened and closed his fingers on the hilt of his sword in turn, allowing air to pass through his palm, and then re-grasped the hilt, the slippery feeling disappeared, and he raised his sword and stabbed it into the throat of the jackal soldier.

An ordinary jackal mercenary, his combat power is already very close to that of the first professional who changed jobs, too much beyond Mu Kai, and the suppression of the level is very obvious, although he left four or five sword wounds on the enemy, but unfortunately they are not enough to be fatal, not even serious injuries.

He used psychic probe to capture every flaw of the gnolls and see all the offensive trajectories, but the reaction speed and strength of his body could not keep up with his consciousness.

The frost condensed by magic was constantly melting, and the combat effectiveness of the jackal soldiers was rapidly recovering, and the pressure on Mu Kai was increasing, and the situation was reversed in the blink of an eye.

When Mu Kai was embarrassed to parry, Walter quietly circled behind the gnoll, concentrated his energy, and successfully hit a deadly blast, and the highly condensed fighting energy blessed the sword breaker, simply cutting off the gnoll's vertebrae.

"Aha! That's how it feels! ”

Walter looked excited, the dagger spinning rapidly around his fingertips.

It was his most perfect blow to date, quick, precise, powerful, and seemed to pick up some kind of skill in it.

As Cardina said, the fight on the battlefield is the real place to temper martial arts, and when this war is over, the power of the nobles will be greatly weakened, while the power of the adventurers will be greatly increased, and many mercenary groups will emerge to lay the foundation for the rise of the blood alliance.
