Chapter 42: The Temptation from the Darkness

Section I

The Gryffindors lost the match, and after Harry fainted, Hufflepuff Seeker Cedric Diggory grabbed the Golden Snitch. Sauron and the Gryffindors sent the fainted Harry to Madam Pomfrey, where he waited until Harry woke up.

"Harry!" Sauron whispered, looking a little worried, "What do you think?"

Harry looked around in confusion at first, but after a while, his gaze refocused, and his face looked pale. He looked very weak.

"What happened?" Harry said, struggling to sit up, but was pressed back onto the bed by Sauron.

"You fell," said Fred, "there must be—then—fifty feet?"

"We thought you were dead," Arya said, shivering. Hermione let out a short, shrill sound, her eyes bloodshot.

"But what happened in that game," said Harry, "? Can we play again?"

No one spoke, and the Gryffindors were disappointed, and Sauron patted him on the shoulder comfortingly.

"We didn't—failed, did we?" Harry's tone was low, and he looked at Sauron as if asking for help.

"Diggory has caught the Golden Snitch," said George, "just after you fall." He didn't understand what was going on. When he looks back and sees you on the ground, he's going to interrupt the game and want to replay. But they won fairly, they won fairly, and even Wood admits it. ”

"Where's Wood?" Harry said, suddenly realizing that Wood wasn't there.

"It's still raining," said Fred, "and we think he's going to drown himself." ”

Harry buried his face between his knees and grabbed his hair with both hands, looking extremely remorseful. Sauron put his arm around his shoulders and gently comforted, "Don't worry, it's just a game, it's not worth it. ”

"But we failed, because of me." Harry was sad, "I failed, I failed, I failed to catch the Golden Snitch. ”

"Everybody fails." Sauron sighed, "You're no exception. ”

The Gryffindors comforted Harry, and it made him feel better. About ten minutes later, Madam Pomfrey came over and told them to let Harry rest.

"We'll see you later." Fred told Harry, "Don't blame yourself, Harry. You're still our best Seeker. The team was gone, leaving trails of mud in their wake, and Sauron, after making sure Harry wasn't fooling around, left Ron and Hermione with him.

Sauron made a beeline for the Slytherin common room, back to his room, there was so much going on in a day that Sauron needed to calm down and think to himself.

Sauron sat alone on the couch, his eyes closed, motionless, and after a while, he opened his eyes, waved his wand, and a newspaper flew over his desk—it was a copy of the Daily Prophet, the same issue that Fudge had shown him before Black escaped from Azkaban.

On the first page of the newspaper was a large photograph of the award-winning Weasleys on a trip to Egypt: nine Weasleys standing in front of the pyramids, all waving to the camera, Ron standing in the middle of the photo, holding Ginny, and Sauron's eyes focused on Ron's shoulder, where his pet mouse, Spotted, was lying there, with a toe missing from his front paw.

Sauron's eyes narrowed, staring at the picture with no expression on his face. After a long time, he slowly stood up, took a deep breath, and sneered, his cold eyes flashed with a hint of coldness and hideousness.

On Monday, Harry was discharged from the hospital, but he seemed to be depressed. Sauron knew why, not only because he lost the match, but also because after he fainted, his broom was blown to pieces by the wind and hit the beating willow, only to be shattered and never to be repaired.

"Don't be so upset." Sauron comforted, carrying a large paper bag in his hand, "Maybe you can use this." ”

Harry glanced at Sauron in surprise, then quickly unwrapped the package - a brand new Light Wheel 2000, the same as his original one. Harry looked at Sauron with a look of excitement and surprise.

Sauron smiled and shrugged, "I bought this broom when I was in first grade, when you first became a Seeker, but you already had one at the time, so it was always with me, like new. Sauron smiled helplessly, "You know, I don't really have a talent for flying. ”

When Harry returned to the Gryffindor common room with a brand new broomstick, one can imagine how surprised the Gryffindors were, especially Oliver Wood, who had regained his strength and was eager to find Sauron to give him a hug when he learned that Harry's broom was a gift from Sauron.

"Look!" Wood exclaimed, "We still have a chance, especially since our best Seeker is back!" ”

The Gryffindors weren't the only ones happy, Lupin was back, and the Defence Against the Dark Arts class continued to be taught by him without having to face Snape, which was a great thing for Harry and them. Snape wasn't so happy, though, and in Potions class, Sauron could feel his gloom and frustration.

Coming out of the underground classroom of Potions class, Sauron found that Harry was speechless, he hesitated for a long time, and finally just said something inconsequential to Sauron, and left with Hermione, they still had to go to class, while Sauron left the castle and walked in the direction of the Forbidden Forest.

In Lupin's office, Harry sat in a high chair with a cup of hot tea on the table in front of him, and Lupin sat across the table, and in the corner of the office, there was a Hinkpunk in a glass tank, which they were going to use for class—a one-legged guy who looked like a wisp of smoke, fragile, and didn't look like he wanted to hurt anyone, but lured the traveler into the swamp. Hinkpunk had the glass above his head, and from time to time there was a terrible creaking sound.

"I've heard about that game," Lupin said, "and I'm sorry about your broomstick." Can it still be repaired?"

"No," Harry said, "the tree smashed it to pieces. ”

Lupin sighed, a subtle hint of apology on his face.

"The year I came to Hogwarts, they planted this tree. People used to play a game from time to time. Just try to touch the tree. Eventually, a boy named David Gjern almost lost an eye and then stopped us from approaching the tree. Broomsticks are certainly not immune. ”

"But I'm lucky." Harry smiled, "My brother gave me a new broomstick, the same model, also a Halo 2000. ”

Lupin was stunned for a moment, then smiled gently, "Yes, you have a good brother, I have to say, Sauron really cares about you." ”

Harry nodded proudly, "Have you heard of the Dementors too?"

Lupin gave Harry a quick look. "Yes, I heard. I don't think any of us have ever seen Professor Dumbledore so angry. For a few days, those guys were getting more and more restless...... I was angry because I couldn't enter the campus....... I guess they made you fall, right?"

"Yes." Harry said. He hesitated, and then the question he had to ask blurted out, and it was too late to stop. "Why? Why do they affect me like that? Am I—"

"It has nothing to do with weakness." Professor Lupin said sharply. It was as if he could see through what Harry was thinking. "Those Dementors affect you more than others, because they don't have the horrors you used to have."

A ray of winter sunlight shone into the classroom, illuminating Lupin's gray hair and the wrinkles on his young face.

"Dementors are some of the most hateful creatures on Earth. They haunt the darkest and dirtiest places in droves, cheering and despair, draining the peace, hope, and joy in the air around them. Even Muggles could feel their save, though they couldn't see them. Get too close to a Dementor and any good feelings, any happy memories you may have, will be sucked out by it. If it could, it would live on you for a long time, and eventually make you like it - soulless and evil. All you will be left with is the worst memories of your life. The worst thing that has ever happened to you, Harry, is enough for anyone to fall off a broomstick. You have nothing to be shy about. ”

"When they're close to me—" Harry said, glaring at Lupin's desk, throat tight, "I can hear Voldemort killing my mother. ”

Lupin's arm suddenly moved, as if it was about to grab Harry's shoulder, but changed his mind. There was silence for a moment, and then—

"Why are they coming to the playing field?" Harry asked bitterly.

"They're hungry." Lupin said coldly, sorting through his briefcase, "Dumbledore didn't let them into the school, so the human sacrifices that were supplied to them were gone. I think the large crowd around the Quidditch arena is a big temptation for them. All those excitement and passions are high...... It was a feast for them. ”

"Azkaban must be terrible." Harry muttered. Lupin nodded gloomily.

"The castle is located on a small island, on the way to the sea, but there is no need for walls and water to keep the prisoners in place, because the prisoners are under their control, and the prisoners themselves do not have the simplest thoughts. Most of the inmates went insane within a few weeks. ”

"But Blake escaped from them," Harry said slowly, "and he fled......

Lupin's briefcase slipped off the table, and he had to quickly bend down to pick it up.

"Yes," he straightened up, "Blake must have found a way to fight them." I don't believe he can ...... If wizards and Dementors stay together for too long, they will cause the wizard to lose mana......"

"You let that Dementor on the train retreat." Harry said suddenly.

"Yes -- there are certain defenses that people can apply," said Lupin, "but there was only one guy like that on the train at the time." The more numerous they are, the harder they are to defend against. ”

"What kind of defense?" Harry immediately asked, "Can you teach me?"

"I don't want to pretend to be an expert at fending off Dementors, Harry - it's the other way around......"

"But if there's another Quidditch match and they come again, there's a way to deal with them—"

Lupin looked at Harry's determined face, hesitated, and said, "Meet...... All right. I'll find a way to help you. But I'm afraid this matter will have to wait until next semester. I have a lot to do before the holidays. I was sick at the wrong time. ”

"That's great." Harry said happily, "Thank you so much. ”

Lupin smiled and shook his head, and then, he paused, "I don't know if I should ask, but Harry, why don't you go to Sauron, I think he will help you, as long as you talk to him." ”

Harry hesitated, and after a while, he said slowly, "I just ...... Well...... I just don't want him to think I'm too weak. ”

At night, in the Gryffindor tower, all the people were asleep.

Harry lay there quietly, he was too deep asleep to notice that the jade pendant was slowly turning into wisps of black smoke on his chest, dissipating into the air, and soon, along with the metal chain that hung around Harry's neck, was gone.

And in the corner of the bedroom, the black mist gradually condensed again, and it turned into the pendant again. The moonlight shone in through the window, and in the dim moonlight, the pendant emitted an eerie glow, and in the darkness, it seemed as if a voice was whispering, telling of the temptation from the darkness......
