Write fan fiction
I've read many novels, but writing, is the first time.
I once seemed to have read an article that said that when writing a novel, you can first write a fanfiction and practice your pen. I like Jin Yong's martial arts novels the most, and I have a soft spot for "Dragon Babu", so I figured out how to write Tianlong Doujin.
There are two benefits to writing fan fiction. The first reader has the impression of the characters of the original book in their minds, so the author's description of the characters can be relatively simple, and the second is the original story plot of the original book, and the author can also follow along.
But I feel that there are also downsides. The first is that the reader's impression of the original book is too deep, the characters and the plot of the story are well known, and it is difficult to write new ideas. The second is that if the protagonist always follows the plot of the original book, it gives people the feeling of being a soulless "chess piece" - of course, it may be that the protagonist consciously makes a chess piece, and does it with endless fun. Then there is too much attachment to the original work, and copyright is a big problem.
In general, I feel that fan fiction, the original book provides the foundation (character description, character relationships, plot, etc.), but also sets a corresponding limiting framework.
