Chapter 435: The Serengeti Savannah
This time, the Serengeti Reserve is just northwest of the Ngorongoro Crater, and the two reserves are next to each other. The Serengeti Reserve was established very early, having been designated as a hunting reserve since 1929 and part of it became the Serengeti National Park in 1951 and was inscribed on the World Heritage List.
The name Serengeti comes from the Maasai word for "endless plain", but it's not a flat river. The entire Serengeti region can be roughly divided into three parts, the southern part is the Serengeti plain, which has a very significant feature, that is, the whole plain is full of low grassy plants, mainly horsetail and sage, and there is absolutely no tree! It is also a unique landscape in the Serengeti Plains.
To the north of the plains is the Northern Serengeti, which is the exact opposite of the Serengeti Plains, full of acacia forests and higher terrain than the south, with plenty of gentle hills and highlands.
In addition to the two Serengeti in the north and south, there is also a slender area that juts out in the direction of Lake Victoria throughout the western part of the Serengeti Reserve, which is known as the Western Corridor. The Western Corridor is a region of grassland and dense woods, and the land is all black clay, and due to its proximity to Lake Victoria and the fact that there are many rivers running through it, there are many swampland-like environments in the Western Corridor.
Because of its vast savannahs, dense woods, rolling hills, crisscrossing rivers, and crisscrossed marshes, which cover almost all wildlife, this grassland is an ideal habitat for animals throughout East Africa.
More than 70 species of large mammals and more than 500 species of birds live here. There are also many rare species that are unique to the area. But it's not these animals that live here all year round that make this grassland famous, it's the animal migration that takes place almost every six months is a unique scenery here and even in the whole world.
After passing through Kenya into Tanzania, the famous Great Rift Valley suddenly splits into two deep gullies running parallel to the north and south, which just encircle the Serengeti grassland. Due to this special structure of the terrain, the Serengeti region has a special regional climate.
During the dry season, the Serengeti plains also enter a dry rainfall period, when all the grass in the grasslands turns yellow, and the ponds and rivers disappear. However, the northern plains were a lush scene, and while the southern plains entered the dry season, the northern Serengeti had the rainy season.
At this time, most of the herbivores that originally lived in the southern plains began to migrate. They have to travel hundreds of kilometers or more. Go to the northern plains, where water and grass are abundant, to escape the hot and water-scarce dry season. When the dry season enters the Northern Serengeti, they return to the Southern Plains by the same route, as the Serengeti Plains enter the rainy season again.
If the animals of the Serengeti region are relied upon, there will be no spectacular animal migration. In many parts of the tropics, the dry season alternates with the rainy season. This is nothing new. The Serengeti region is home to wildlife in the western corridor.
In the Western Corridor, there are grasslands, forests, rivers and swamps, but its most important feature is that it has no obvious rainy and dry seasons, and its annual precipitation is always at the level of 700 to 1000 mm. The average temperature is only about 21 degrees Celsius, making it a natural resort for wildlife.
With this natural environment, it is difficult not to attract wildlife, because it is probably from the central part of East Africa, so this area of abundant water and grass has not only become the first choice for animals in several nature reserves in Tanzania, but also many animals living in other countries also migrate here in groups at the turn of the seasons, such as Kenya and Ethiopia in the north, Zambia and Mozambique in the south, and Congo in the west.
For wild animals, they don't have to worry about passports and visas, they go there when there is grass to eat, and they go there where there is water to drink. With the large herbivores gone, the large carnivores that feed on herbivores have lost their main source of food, and a large army of carnivorous followers has arrived in the Serengeti.
So every year from January to May, the Serengeti region is a world of wildlife, and if you want to see the spectacular migration, you either come in January or May, these migrating animals seem to have the same kind of timer in their bodies, and they act in unison at this time of year, and there is no difference of a few days.
And Hong Tao and their African hunting trip, fortunately chose January, mainly considering the problem of the Chinese New Year, who knows that Lu Dao accidentally achieved this adventure. Hong Tao is an atheist, but he also has to sigh the miracle of fate, in some cases, there is a good luck is better than anything, the only thing that makes Hong Tao depressed is that good luck is uncontrollable, God knows when it came in a hurry, and when it left quietly!
In fact, not only animals are migrating at this time, but a handful of humans are also migrating, but their migration route is in the sky. Dozens of huge hot air balloons lined up in a straight line, starting from the tent hotel in the middle of the crater, the first four were the ones Hong Tao and his team, and the hot air balloons behind the crater had not yet risen from the hotel's lawn.
In the face of the sudden appearance of so many colorful monsters in the sky, those baboons living near the hotel also climbed to the treetops and tent tops, looking up at the sky with their families, it is estimated that they have also become accustomed to watching human migration activities here twice a year, but they don't understand where these "big baboons" who walk on two legs and can always carry delicious food are going, what they are going to do, and when they can come back!
Two hours later, the four hot air balloons flew over the peak on the northwest side of the crater, and when they slowly descended from a height of 300 meters through the clouds to 100 meters, a deep ravine appeared in front of them, several kilometers wide.
On the other side of this ravine is a green sea! The Dutch are right, there really isn't a single tree here, and although it's all grassland, it looks bigger, more boundless, and flatter! It's so flat that it gives the illusion of being unreal.
"Here we are, this is the Serengeti plain, I'm right, if you can find a tree here, I'll drink a bottle of Chinese wine." Holland urinated with Hong Tao for a long time about the knowledge of this place just now, but Hong Tao always raised the bar with him, including the problem of growing trees on the grassland.
"Hehe, don't brag, empiricism kills people! Look, what's over there? At least 2 trees! Hong Tao never saw the coffin without tears, he lay on the edge of the hanging basket and blinked his little eyes hard, and finally saw two tall tree trunks in front of him.
"Show it to yourself, remember, you lost, you have to be my tour guide for free when you get to Beijing." Holland urinated and handed the telescope in his hand to Hong Tao, Hong Tao's telescope lent to Tikov, the two of them only brought a telescope, Tikov was reluctant to use it himself, and kept letting his wife hold it to see the scenery, he himself seemed to be a little short-sighted, always squinting his eyes and touching around.
"X, Nima, are you going to help others deceive me when you come out at this time! How can there be giraffes in this place? Don't they eat leaves! Hong Tao took the telescope and looked at it, so angry that he began to curse people in Chinese, it was not two trees at all, but two giraffes were striding away.
"They're probably coming back from the Northern Serengeti, it's the dry season, and they might go to the Western Corridor, or they might go a little further south, who knows! But they helped me win a free guide, and I wish them all the best! Holland was delighted and waved at the two giraffes.
"Bad luck! The two of you have to run into a lion halfway, grandma drops, and it won't end well if you lose the bet! Hong Tao was not so generous, although he still had to pretend to be willing to gamble and lose on the surface, but he muttered all kinds of curses to the two giraffes. (To be continued......)
