Chapter 42: The Dwarves and the Haunted House
Both Pasta and Julius thought it was just Lunaka's joke, but the barefoot child actually took them to the rumored haunted place.
The haunted place is a small yard, facing the sea to the north, but far from the port, with rocky geology on the side, and the terrain is quite high, and it is not even worth using it as a beach, and it is not of much value as a fishing spot - it is perhaps more practical to take a fishing boat and a fishing net to fish offshore than to fish here. It's a place of little value, and even the most greedy merchant will shake his head and turn away - even if it only costs a gold coin to buy it, no one will be interested, it's too remote, and there have been rumors for decades that this place is haunted.
The small courtyard sits alone by the sea, surrounded by few buildings, as if it were separated from the diaspora, leaving only a path that barely allows the Whimsy to accompany him, which also makes Pasta a lot easier.
The barefoot kid brought the Wonder here. Lulunaka got out of the driver's seat and threw a silver coin at the child, "I didn't go to the wrong place, this should be your reward." β
The child put the coin in his mouth and bit it, then became elated, thanked him a few times, and ran away, fearing that Lunaka would snatch it back from him.
"One silver coin seems a bit too much for a child. Pasta also got out of the wagon and walked over to the horse's head and fed the horse hay.
"I was going to give him a gold coin, but that would hurt him, so I thought it would be better to give a silver coin. Lulunaka said, "Silver coins will only allow him to enjoy the luxuries of a child, but gold coins will probably cost him his life." β
"You're kind to strangers. Pasta said.
"Why do you want to show a fierce face to someone you don't know? It's better to be nice to someone than to cause trouble everywhere, isn't it, uncle?"
Pasta just smiled at Lulunaka's teasing and didn't say much.
Julius climbed down from the carriage and stood in front of the door of the little courtyard. The walls are mottled and broken, and there is no protection in sight, and if a thief comes, he will probably only need to jump casually to get there, but this kind of place, I'm afraid even a stupid thief won't come. The door was ajar and looked like it couldn't be closed, and Julius looked through the crack in the door and saw no one in sight. He looked up at the house in the small courtyard, a house with a chimney, the tiles on the roof looked like they had fallen off, and the frame of the house could be seen.
"Is this really haunted?" asked Julius, turning her head and asking Lulunaka.
"You, who have seen even real necromancy, are you afraid of ghosts?" said Lulunaka, a sneering expression.
"Don't you think it's suspicious? Haunted in such a place, why?" continued Julius.
"Is this place worth forging rumors of hauntings?" said Lulunaka, "I'll be clear, there's nothing of value in this damn place, there's no priceless gems in the walls, and there's not a crate of gold hidden underground. Lulunaka walked to the edge of the wall of the small courtyard, stretched out her elbow and slammed the peeling wall, shaking off the layers of plaster, "Who will be relieved to hide the treasure in such a place for decades? Besides, even if the dead are relieved, if the living hear that there is a treasure in this place, they will not tear it down sooner. β
The half-hidden door was opened, which startled Julius. He didn't see anyone appear in front of the door that was opened, but he heard voices. "There are no treasures here, just a haunted house that a homeless man won't come, and a dwarf with a bad temper. β
The sound came from a lower position, and Julius lowered his head slightly, finally seeing the man pushing the door open. It was a dwarf, and he was wearing a form-fitting gray shortshirt and shorts, revealing two strong arms. He had a very thick beard that was braided into three braids, the length of which hung down to his chest. Compared to his thick beard, the dwarf's hair was not so thick, the top of his head was bare, only some thinning hair on the sides, and he looked like a monk, but the dwarf was not a monk, and no dwarf was willing to do this kind of work.
The dwarf stepped out of the door and glanced around Lulunaka and the others, "It's a coincidence, I was just going to come over while it was still daytime to see if this house was about to collapse, and I didn't expect to meet you fresh faces." Who are you, what are you going to do here?" said the dwarf. He saw the Wonder and looked up at the behemoth, "What an interesting design...... Who made this strange thing, and the guards let you into the King's Castle?"
"This is a serious business, Uncle Dwarf. Lulunaka walked over to the dwarf, her petite figure could almost make eye contact with the dwarf, "It's weird, I remember that the owner of this place is supposed to be human, why is it a dwarf?"
Hearing this, the dwarf stroked his beard and pinched his fingers in the braid, "This was my place decades ago, and I bought it from its original owner for a few gold coins, after which the old man left the King's Castle. I don't know where he went, maybe he's dead of old age. If you're looking for the original owner, unfortunately, you won't even be able to find his relatives, it's the kind of person who is alone, and no one cares if he dies. β
Lulunaka looked troubled, "That's going to be tough...... There were some things that I was going to confirm, but since the person was gone, it became troublesome. β
"People are inherently short-lived to us like meteors. The dwarf said, "If you want to do business with these short-lived fellows, you can't be sloppy in your contract. Are you right, old lady?"
Hearing the dwarf's words, both Pasta and Julius reacted differently. Both were a little surprised, but Julius was particularly surprised, and Pasta looked like he couldn't help but laugh.
Lulunaka's face didn't change much, the smile on her face remained unchanged, and she touched her chin like a dwarf, but her smooth chin didn't have a braid to pinch, "Is it so easy to see? I thought I was too young for others to see." β
"It's a personal intuition, not an experience that other people can learn. The dwarf laughed, "This is a skill I learned in the world of short-lived breeds for so long." But you've almost deceived me, old lady, and if you hadn't said what you just said, I might not have been interested in thinking deeply. β
Seeing that the dwarf was smiling so happily, Lulunaka laughed too, but not so boldly. Julius watched the two of them laugh out loud for no reason, and could only stare at it all. This dwarf knew by his appearance that his age was definitely not small, but it was such a dwarf that he even called Lulunaka an old lady. While admiring his courage, Julius became more and more curious about Lunaka's real age, at least she must be older than the dwarf in front of her.
After the two finished laughing, Lulunaka reached out first, "Lulunaka." β
The dwarf reached out and grabbed Lulunaka's hand, and the two of them clasped together, "Barrick Golden Cup." Don't you have a last name?"
"Already forgot. Gold coins are a good name. Lulunaka laughed, "I guess you're an amazing businessman. β
"No, it's just a tired toiler. The dwarfβBarrick Kingcup shook Lunaka's hand vigorously in response.
