Chapter 4 The Rats and the Rats
The rat path is a chaotic and complicated place. It is a buffer zone between the surface and sewer worlds, and the entrances and exits are mostly in the slums, and if there are a few entrances and exits in the bustling places, they have long been sealed off, or controlled by some powerful or tacit organization. Some of the rat paths are not completely above ground, and in some areas, they may be mostly exposed on the surface, blending in with the buildings of the slums, like a half-exposed earthworm burrowing into the ground.
The rat path where Julius is now located is completely underground. He walked down the rat path, avoiding the crowds of people who were walking in front of him, or passing by, each yelling and swearing, or talking to himself in a way he didn't understand at all, which sounded like the murmur of a madman. The road that could be walked on was not wide, but it was big enough for a carriage to go with itβbut no one but a fool would really bring a carriage to such a place and block the road, which would probably cause countless disputes. The inhabitants below here are not very good-tempered.
Julius avoided the unfriendly gazes, and slapped away all sorts of hands that were trying to rub against him. On the first day he arrived at the rat road, he suffered the loss of a pickpocket, and now, he will not be so defenseless...... And his money bag is not in his pocket either, but in a safer place. The bag with a bit of money was placed in the place of his heart, and an extra layer of cushioning was placed in the place where it might be fatal, so that he was a little relieved, and at least no one could steal money from him, and if he wanted to take his money, he might have to have the ability to dig out his heart.
The pavement beneath my feet was anything but good, wet, slippery and unstable, with the broken bricks on the ground and cracks, and the gaps between the bricks were full of sewage. When you step on it, the water under the bricks will splash out and land on someone's lap, or on the body of a dwarf or a dwarf, and cause curses. Julius looked up, and a drop of water fell on his face. Naturally, there is no such thing as rain in this place, and you can only see the seepage ceiling when you look up, which is the "rain" of the rat path. The feet of others are their own heads...... This is the rat road.
Julius walked forward through the crowd, a wizened hand grabbing his sleeve. His hand was on the sword at his waist for a moment, and when he saw that it was a hunchbacked old man who grabbed his sleeve, he almost pulled out the sword and pressed it back. "I don't have any money for you. Julius said.
"I'm not a beggar, young man. The old man clung to Julius' sleeve, which made Julius leave the road and step aside. There are no decent buildings in the rat path, only the dilapidated shacks made of wooden planks and nails, which occupy most of the space in the rat path. Some people use shacks as a place to live, and some people use them as places to do business, no matter what kind of thing they are.
The old man who pulled Julius aside, apparently a man in the business of buying and selling, pulled Julius to a shack, and Julius looked inside, and there was nothing in the shed, only bottles and cans, and those transparent bottles contained liquids of suspicious color.
"Do you think I look like a rich man, old man?" said Julius to the old man, patting his pocket, "I haven't even earned my money for today's meal." β
"You certainly don't look like a rich person. The old man laughed, "But you look like you're going down there to pick up the rags." β
Julius frowned, the old man was indeed right. He didn't look very eyesighted, but it seems that Julius underestimated him...... It's not a big skill to see that Julius is a rag-picking person, but if you can see that Julius is not the kind of person who can easily beat people, he does have sharp eyes. To put it bluntly, Julius's stunned appearance is easier to deceive, and he will not use violence easily.
"If you're holding me back because I'm good-tempered, you're probably wrong. Julius said to the old man, turning to leave, but was immediately stopped by the old man. "I've seen a lot of young people like you who go to the sewers without any preparation, and most of them don't come back, and most of them don't have hands, feet, ears, or eyes...... Only a small number of lucky guys came back in perfect condition. β
Listening to the old man's troubled tone, Julius did not show a look of disgust or mockery, but a little helpless. "Since you can see that I'm a scavenger who goes deep into the sewers to pick up rubbish, what advice do you have for me?"
The old man saw that Julius did not mean to leave with another shake of his head, and thought to himself that he had probably caught the right person, and his voice became even higher, "How can a young man of strength like you degrade himself to those filthy scavengers? Adventurer, this is the name you deserve! If I were a few dozen years younger, I would be like you, ready to go underground to find treasure...... I'm no longer good at it, but if it were you, I would be able to do better than when I was younger...... The premise is, you have to be really prepared. β
Julius looked at the old man wordlessly, thinking that the old man was finally going to get to the point.
"You need some potions in case you need them, and I noticed you don't have any potions that can heal or be used for any other purpose, which can be fatal in the sewers. It doesn't matter if you're an armed adventurer or an unarmed scavenger, if you're not prepared, you're all the same β you could easily die in the sewers. β
"So what should I do?"
The old man grinned at Julius, "I am the way, young man. He pulled out a bottle from behind him and held it up and shook it in front of Julius. The bottle was not a high-end product, the inferior glass looked gray, and only a faint view of the liquid inside, which swayed with the old man's shaking hand, and the amber color looked a bit like honey - because it looked like honey, then it was definitely not honey.
"Look at this. The old man's tone was a little excited, and Julius knew that everyone who sold something to others was like the old man was now. "This potion allows you to see clearly in half a day, you can see the wagging tail of a mouse in the distance in the dark, and in a place like a sewer where there is almost no light, this potion can easily avoid the dangers hidden in the dark......!
Julius pushed the bottle away and sighed, "I don't want it, thank you." β
The old man did not panic at Julius's refusal, but continued, "I know what you are thinking, young man, if you think this is a fake potion, and think that I am lying to you, then you are very wrong. I can let you take a sip right now and feel that extraordinary sense of sobriety......"
"Those who just came to the Rat Road will probably be deceived by you. Julius interrupted the old man, "Of course I know that your potion is real, and I also know that you have half of it mixed with inferior honey. The potion does work within a few tens of minutes, but if you want to last longer, it's impossible. Tell me, how many bottles of the original potion did you dilute?"
After the old man was interrupted, he smiled, dragged Julius aside, lowered his voice and said to Julius: "This little brother, why haven't I seen a familiar face like you in the rat road?"
When the old man speaks of familiar faces, he does not mean that Julius is his acquaintance, but that Julius is a person who has been in the rat path for a while and has experience in walking in the rat path.
"I don't hang out in rat roads very often. Julius said, "If you want to remember my face, you probably don't have that chance." Let me tell you one thing, the sweetness of the honey in the bottle is too pungent, so you can't fool people. β
The old man brought the bottle to his nose and sniffed it hard, "I don't smell any sweetness." β
"I have a sensitive nose. "And I've smelled stranger smells than this." Julius patted the old man on the shoulder, "Don't be too unconscionable, old man, maybe someone will die down there because of your potion." Julius turned away, and this time, the old man did not hold Julius.
The old man touched his nose, "Self-righteous little ghost...... Whether they buy my potion or not, those fools will die down there anyway. It's better to be a beggar than to venture out there and scavenge for waste...... Hey, young man over there, look over here!"
The old man turned his head, looked for another target, and walked towards a new one.
