Chapter 1 The Walls Have Eyes
Song Yao always felt that there was a pair of eyes staring at her recently.
Whether it was when she was knitting and embroidering with her female companions, or when she was cooking and washing clothes in the courtyard, that seemingly innocent gaze had always been on her, staring at her a little uncomfortable, and even the back of her neck was cold.
She tried to turn back suddenly, but every time she turned around, her eyes disappeared, as if she were playing hide and seek with her.
This did not give her a little comfort, but made her more timid, so, after dinner, she told her brother Song Huan about the matter that had troubled her for many days.
Song Huan was in a hurry to go out, and when he heard his sister say this, he didn't pay attention to it, and just said, "If you don't go out of the door, you are in your own house, except for your sister-in-law, where is anyone watching you?" Is there an eye in the wall? ”
After speaking, he hurriedly went out, Song Yao followed behind and shouted a few times, he just waved his hand, and said from afar, "I'll talk about it when I come back in the evening", and disappeared around the corner of the street.
Song Yao shook her head and stomped her feet at the door, only hating her father and mother for dying too early, and she had such a gambling brother again, and no one was in charge of her own affairs. However, when she returned to the courtyard, the sentence that Song Huan had just said suddenly appeared in her mind: Could it be that the wall has eyes?
Song Yao was slightly stunned, and looked up at the courtyard wall: the people in the courtyard opposite had moved away for four or five years, and the yard had been empty, overgrown with weeds, and she and her sister-in-law would occasionally go to the courtyard to pull some wild vegetables and come back to make cakes. However, she had never seen anyone in the abandoned courtyard, let alone seen it, and she had never even heard any movement on the other side of the wall.
But just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean you don't.
Song Yao's heart moved, and a thought came to him: maybe there were refugees or beggars who were temporarily resting there, but they didn't know it.
Thinking of this, she had made up her mind to go to the courtyard and have a look. She wanted to ask her sister-in-law to come with her, but her sister-in-law had just had an awkward quarrel with her brother and was crying in her room, so she couldn't bother her.
By this time the sky was already a little gray, and the moon had crept up, like a dim lantern, hanging from the treetops.
Song Yao stepped out of the courtyard door, and after a little hesitation, she walked towards the courtyard next to her, pushed open the mottled unlocked wooden door, and stepped in.
The yard is small, but it is very desolate, and the stone bricks under your feet are covered with weeds, so dense that you don't know how to settle down.
Song Yao looked around the courtyard, and when she saw that there was no one around, she walked in with her skirt. After walking briskly to the eaves, she mustered up the courage to glance at the window, which had no curtain, and quickly retracted her head.
She didn't see anything.
It was not yet dark, and although the room was not bright, there was no furniture to hide. Looking at it at a glance, Song Yao only saw a few tattered walls, and other than that, there was nothing.
She breathed a sigh of relief, feeling that the courage she had lost was a little back, and she struck while the iron was hot, and looked at the stove and the other rooms again.
She found nothing, there was no second person in this courtyard except herself. Song Yao's heart was much more relaxed, and she even felt that the hazy moon above her head had become beautiful. She looked at the pale yellow moon halo, grabbed a dogtail grass and twisted it between her fingers, hummed a little song and walked towards the courtyard gate.
Moonlight swept over her head and spilled onto the partition wall, gently illuminating the gray wall. Song Yao paused and suddenly stopped his brisk steps.
She turned her head, her eyes narrowed slightly, and looked at the wall: there was a hole in the middle of the wall, slightly thicker than her thumb, and she couldn't find it unless she looked closely. However, such a small hole is enough to hold one eye and a bundle of gazes.
Song Yao shuddered, hesitated in place for a long time, and finally walked towards the wall between the two families. She leaned close to the cold wall, her right eye pressed against the hole.
It's a little taller, but when you stand on tiptoe, your eyes are just right for a small hole, which is just the right height for a man who is not tall.
Song Yao was startled by this absurd idea that suddenly broke into her mind, she leaned against the wall, looked through the hole in the wall, and looked towards her home.
That's right, the stove, the well, she can see it all clearly, and from this angle, even her room without a locked door can be seen: the dresser, the shelf, the bed...... and a few unfolded shirts on the bed.
Song Yao almost screamed, she felt that her back was very cold, and the cold gaze that had been following her for the past few days seemed to be attached to it, and she couldn't shake it off.
"Xiao Yao, Xiao Yao."
Her sister-in-law came out of the house, tears on her face, and when she saw the uncleaned dining table, she began to call her name at the top of her voice.
Song Yao was awakened by this slightly dissatisfied shout, and she left the partition wall as if it were a monster baring its teeth at her. After wiping the cold sweat from her forehead, she calmed down and walked quickly out of the courtyard door towards her house.
"Xiao Yao, where did you go after eating? Don't say a word. When my sister-in-law saw her come back, she couldn't help but say a few words of disgust.
Song Yao smiled and snatched the dishes in her hand, but pretended not to care and asked, "Sister-in-law, have you noticed the hole in the wall?" ”
"Holes? What hole? ”
Song Yao held her breath and pestled her chin in the direction of the wall, "Look, your thumb is so big, is it just there?" ”
Her sister-in-law glanced at the wall and smiled, "Oh, yes, how did I find out?" Tomorrow, let your brother live some mud to make up for it. But there's nothing to make up, and there's no one living in that house anyway. ”
"Let's make it up." Song Yao said without raising his head, "Make up for peace of mind." ”

On the third day of the cave, a man moved into the next yard.
Song Yao heard about this from her sister-in-law, and that evening, when she was mending up her needle gown in the house, her sister-in-law hurriedly came in from outside. When he saw her, he sat down on the edge of the bed and happily talked about what he had just seen.
"The yard is cleaned up magnificently, the newly paved floor tiles, the tiles on the house have been replaced, they are still good porcelain tiles, and the sun shines so brightly that people can't open their eyes. The furniture in the house is also something I haven't seen, so I said that the screen, the flowers and birds on it are really like, this is not counted, the screen is also inlaid with jade, hey, I have never seen such a big jade ...... in my life"
Song Yao raised her head, and a light flashed across her eyes, "Sister-in-law, are you saying that someone has moved in from the yard next door?" ”
