Chapter 33: Wine and Tea
The CahemΓ‘n Exchange is the largest exchange in Turin, and the stalls inside are worth a lot of money, and the rents are rising year after year.
According to Turin law and the regulations governing the exchange, each citizen of Turin could run a maximum of two stalls, but the greedy aristocrats were not satisfied with this.
To be a little more polite, they will buy it from civilians for a little less than the market price, and the rogue ones will of course hire thugs to grab it directly, Mavia is the latter, but it is not a minority who do so.
Mavia pursed her lips and said as a matter of course.
"I have no objection."
After talking to the jury, the trial soon reached its final stage.
Edgar coughed twice and said slowly.
"The right to operate the stall belongs to the means of subsistence in the private property of the citizen, so Baron Mavia is guilty of embezzling the property owned by the private citizen.
In accordance with the law of Turin, as amended a week ago, and in consideration of Mavia's baronial title, the Imperial Court sentenced Baron Mavia to two years' imprisonment and a fine of twenty gold coins, to be executed on the spot. β
The first trial was over, with a five-minute adjournment.
The nobles laughed, and even Mavia grinned.
Of course they knew about the Turin Law that had been revised a week ago, but of course no one was going to look at it.
As for the two-year prison sentence, it can be settled with money, and this little money is just a few months of revenue from that stall.
It's just that Baron Mavina is really unlucky, he is the first person in Turin to be in the dock in more than ten years, and this honor must have become the talk of the nobles.
The tea party came to an end, and the second trial soon began, with Presiding Judge Edgar still in charge of the trial.
The defendant was an old acquaintance of everyone, the Earl of Nell, who was said to have killed the entire family of a commoner, which was shameful but still understood by the nobles.
During the lengthy trial, Edgar chattered throughout.
The nobles automatically blocked Edgar's words and chatted in the auditorium.
"Smack"!
I don't know how long it took, but the sound of the gavel sounded again.
The nobles fell silent, only to hear Edgar speak.
"In consideration of the earldom of Nair, the Imperial Court hereby does not deprive the Earl of the right of succession, and the Count of Nair himself will be sentenced to death, which will be executed immediately."
β......β
The smiles of the nobles froze on their faces, Nair just made such a mistake and was about to be executed? These guys in the court are crazy about money!
But who made this guy Nair unlucky......
Everyone in the auditorium shook their heads in regret, and a new discussion began.
The police officer pushed Nair out, and after an unknown amount of time, a scream suddenly came from the next room, and everyone who knew him knew that it was Nair's voice.
"Don't kill me! Don't kill me, it's easy to say how much money you want, don't kill me, don't kill me! β
The aristocrats immediately pricked up their ears and listened to the chaos on the other side of the wall.
After a while, the door was pushed open, and Nair staggered out.
"Help, help, they're going to kill!"
Edgar glanced at Nair, then at the officer beside him.
The officer hesitated, but he had been trained in the courthouse for three days before the trial began, and he knew what to do now.
He gritted his teeth and turned his gun on Nair.
"Bang"!
With a loud gunshot, the entire trial hall finally fell silent.
Looking around at everyone again, Edgar said slowly.
"The trial is now adjourned and the next trial begins in five minutes."
Unlike the stunned nobles, Duke Baruch turned his head slowly, and he looked at Reka with a puzzled look in his eyes.
Reka spread her hands and said with a blank face.
"That's what Judge Edgar meant, all the officers are at his disposal, and I'm just a member of the jury."
Deputy Attorney General Wellington coughed twice and said slurredly.
"The empire is about to change."
As soon as the words fell, the temperature in the trial hall dropped another point.
After a long silence, a nobleman suddenly spoke.
"Turin Law...... It's sold in the hall. β
The servants moved quickly, and in a few moments they brought a heavy Turin method from outside.
The aristocrats snatched the tome and flipped through the laws with all their might.
Most of the nobles didn't reach the rank of earl, let alone if even Nair couldn't escape death.
While studious, they are also glad that they participated in this trial, otherwise Leng Buding would have died if he was caught in the dock!
Tutan is on it, and they have never been so serious in their lives as they are today.
The trial continues.
After nearly two hours of continuous trial, Edgar's voice had become much hoarse.
"In consideration of the countdom of Edres, the Imperial Court hereby does not deprive the Counts of the right of succession, and Count Edras himself will be sentenced to death, which will be executed immediately."
Hearing this doomed outcome, Edras stepped out of the dock, as if he wanted to get into the crowd.
The nobles looked at him with sympathy, but no one came to his aid.
Because the situation is different now, everyone can't protect themselves.
"Bang"!
Another shot, and the officer was much more proficient.
He looked at the nobles triumphantly, then grabbed Edras by the feet and dragged him all the way to the small room at the back of the courtroom.
Glancing at the clock, Edgar said slowly.
"Withdraw from the court now, and every day of the trial will be announced outside the court one day in advance."
As the old figure exited the courtroom, the nobles rushed out without stopping.
As a qualified Turin nobleman, they were certainly not good people, and if Edgar was to look at it, most of the people present would not have escaped death.
For them, the most important thing right now is to destroy the evidence.
The only difference is that they used to give money to the nobles, but now they have to return the money to the bullied commoners!
......
The courthouse in the afternoon is not as lively as it was in the morning, but there are still crowds gathered in front of the courthouse.
Some of them wept at the door, and they were the families of the "victims" of the trial in the morning.
It seemed that they wanted to arouse everyone's sympathy by crying, but unfortunately, because they had seen so many such weepings, the nobles' hearts did not waver, and they stopped in front of the sign at the door and hurried away.
Several of the judges were still strolling on the lawn not far away, but the difference was that the wine in their hands had been replaced by hot tea.
