Chapter 73: Hunting Rituals (3)
We all stared in amazement at the headless praying mantis, headless and motionless.
But there is no doubt that it is still alive. It now sits quietly on the back of a broad blade of grass, its hind limbs clinging to the leaf, hanging upside down, a pair of lethal forelimbs curled up.
If you look closely, you can see that his head is completely disconnected from his neck, and the fracture is covered with uneven chips, which are marks left by chewing on his mouthparts. There are signs of healing at the breach, but blood, tissue fluid, minced flesh, and broken carapace remain.
In addition, some subtle wounds can also be seen on its soft abdomen, such as stab wounds and open wounds.
According to the people who fled back yesterday, this is the bark mantis that attacked them yesterday.
It seems that yesterday, something very bad happened to this praying mantis. But even after such a severe injury, the bark mantis still escaped and was still alive, its belly still bulging, revealing its vigorous vitality.
Without a head, this praying mantis will die of hunger and thirst sooner or later, but now, it is still a threat.
Fortunately, after losing its antennae and eyes, the praying mantis's perception ability was greatly reduced, and even though our large group of warriors were watching from a short distance, it did not react.
Broken Leg and a few veteran fighters came to me to discuss their next move.
We have never encountered such a strange situation, we thought there would be a fierce battle, but it turned out to be an unexpected situation.
After a brief discussion, we decided to attack the headless bark mantis, killing or expelling it was our goal, and now that it has lost more than half of its threat, it is a good opportunity.
So, after some exchanges, the more than 20 warriors who had gathered here began to spread an encirclement, towards the praying mantis on the back of the blades of grass.
A few warriors cautiously climbed onto the grass stalks, and even though the target was gone, the threat of the giant scythe-feet still existed, and we still had to be cautious.
They prepare to launch a surprise attack on the headless bark mantis. More warriors were left on the ground, as the grass was too small to accommodate too many warriors, and the praying mantis was likely to fall to the ground after being attacked, which would fall into the encirclement of the warriors waiting there.
However, after losing its head, this bark mantis has no vision and antennae, and it seems that its body is more sensitive.
I was on the ground and noticed that when the first warrior climbed up the grass, the grass only shook slightly. However, the body of this praying mantis trembled a little, it was a tremor with fear.
By the time a few more warriors had climbed the grass stalks, and were still far away from their target, the headless bark mantis had noticed something unusual, and it slammed its wings, let go of its hind limbs, and then fluttered into the distance.
Without a head, it flew crookedly, but it could be seen trying to escape with all its might. I could seem to feel its fear, a deep fear.
What would make an apex predator so scared.
Before we had time to think about it, the other warriors and I quickly pursued the headless bark mantis in the direction of its escape, and if it didn't fly far, we would have to continue attacking it. If it flees too far, we'll have to see it leave tribal territory to feel at ease.
The headless bark mantis flies very slowly, staggering, stumbling, and without a head, all of its athletic abilities are affected.
It flies in the direction of a sparsely vegetated gravel field, with only a few scattered vegetation. We quickly caught up here, where the view was so wide and the headless bark mantis flew so slowly that we could easily keep up with the target.
It has no sign of hitting the ground yet, it seems that it only lost its head yesterday, and it still has enough stamina and energy in its body to support it for a long flight.
In that case, we are not in a hurry to catch up, but just keep in sight and fall into it.
But at this moment, the mutation suddenly happened.
I saw that not far ahead, at the top of a plant, a huge black shadow suddenly appeared, from the bottom to the top, bounced into the sky at an extremely fast speed, and collided with the headless bark mantis that was flying.
When we just reacted, we saw an extremely terrifying behemoth that had landed not far in front of us.
It has the same appearance as the headless mantis we just chased, but she has an intact triangular head and a hideous mouthparts that are wide open. Moreover, it was twice the size of the headless praying mantis that had just escaped.
This is a female bark mantis, and I noticed that she has a bulging belly.
She is in the period after mating and before giving birth, which is also the most hungry and dangerous.
Ignoring the presence of our group of warriors, she firmly grasped the torso of the headless mantis that had just been captured from the air, and despite the instinctive struggle of the headless mantis's six limbs, she aimed the headless mantis's fat belly at her bloody jaw, and bit down in one bite.
A huge wound immediately appeared on the brown abdomen of the headless mantis, and the fragments of internal organs mixed with various bodily fluids and excrements flowed out, staining the body of the female bark mantis.
But she didn't care, munching bite by bite, bite by bite, and the sizable belly of the originally huge headless mantis quickly disappeared at a speed visible to the naked eye. Soon, the entire abdomen was completely gone.
By the time the abdomen was also eaten, the headless mantis was completely lifeless, and the female mantis was still frantically eating its chest and arthropods, except for the pair of wings that had no nutrients, it seemed that she did not intend to spare any food and nutrients.
Such a bloody and cruel scene happened in front of us. At this moment, I finally understood what had happened to the headless bark mantis before, what it was afraid of, what it wanted to avoid. But no matter how hard it struggled, even if it escaped once, it was finally captured again and completely preyed.
Our species is also great hunters, and is good at catching and eating prey.
But the shock of eating a giant beast so big that we can't resist eating it in front of us is completely different.
The female mantis quickly finished a "hearty" meal, enough meat for our entire tribe to eat twice, but she still didn't seem satisfied. Her swollen belly, along with the fertilized eggs in her belly that may have been left behind by the genes of a freshly eaten headless mantis, drove her to seek more food.
And so, her naked, malevolent and hungry gaze locked on us!
