Chapter Ninety-One: The Empty City

The protagonist leads a large number of subordinates from the main nest and heads east towards "Dongyang City".

If the protagonist is not included, there are 32 male ants, 12 female ants, more than 200 soldier ants, and more than 1,000 worker ants.

The mighty procession moves in a column along the Ant Expressway, with the protagonist and six eight-carrying sedan chairs in the middle of the procession. Among the six sedan chairs, one is for the protagonist, and two are for the protagonist's food. Three of them all have tinder, and several worker ants are responsible for taking care of them all the way.

Roll with his direct team at the front of the team to identify the direction and lead the way, and Rambo Fei led his team to the back.

The team followed the pheromone's guidance at a rapid pace. On the afternoon of the first day, after passing by a secondary nest, the protagonist tells the whole army to rest in this secondary nest so as not to spend the night in the wild.

The next day, the departure continues, and around noon that day, the protagonist sees a familiar rock. This is where the protagonist is attacked by centipedes at night when he camps on the way from "Dongyang City" to the main nest.

The protagonist looks around for the place where the five sacrificial ant ants were buried, and a sunflower seed shell was inserted as a tombstone. But nothing was found, and the heavy rain had washed away all the traces of the past. The protagonist has no choice but to continue on his journey.

That night, the party stayed overnight in another side nest, reducing the amount of time spent marching during the day, but also eliminating the risk of camping in the wilderness.

For two days, the whole team did not encounter any danger, and no ferocious insect dared to challenge the swarm of ants.

The next day, the protagonist leads the team onwards. After the sun crosses the highest point in the sky, the protagonist gradually becomes familiar with the scenery along the way, which is the path he walked when he left "Dongyang Castle". The location of the trees, stones, and shrubs is so familiar, which means that "Dongyang City" is not far ahead.

The protagonist returns to his heart like an arrow, urging the team to speed up the pace. But the more he goes, the more the protagonist discovers that something is wrong.

The surroundings were too quiet, and they were gradually approaching the core area of "Dongyang City", but there was not even a single worker ant or soldier ant with a big head on the road.

Aphids suck on plants, but without the care of ants, a greedy ladybug swallows the aphids that have lost their shelter one after another. There were a few corpses of insects that had died naturally on the ground, but they were not removed by the ant foraging team.

Until the entrance of "Dongyang City", the huge poplar tree still stands proudly, but there is no longer a bustling ant colony at the entrance, and even the sandy land near the originally clean entrance has grown grass sprouts due to poor management.

The protagonist has some bad premonitions, is it possible that all the ants in the entire secondary nest are dead? Who did this to you? Are those suspected murderers? Or was it attacked by the enemy?

The protagonist did not dare to go down to the ground himself, he gave a command, and the whole team stopped.

Subsequently, Rambo Fei, Rambo Fo, and Rambo Wan were each ordered to go down with a team to explore, and the other teams were on guard on the ground.

After about half an hour, Rambovan was the first to crawl out of the underground lair with his subordinates. The protagonist leans over and reads his packet.

Lamboveran's information package shows everything from going underground, exploring around, and back to the surface. Through the information packet, the protagonist sees that the underground nest** is not full of corpses as he imagined, but empty.

"Dongyang Castle" has become an empty city, a ghost town.

In the empty underground city, tunnels and nests everywhere show signs of being damaged in the rain. However, this damage was not caused by water immersion, but by soil seepage during heavy rain. In other words, Dongyang Castle was not destroyed by floods, but at least it had become an empty city before the last heavy rain, and there were no dutiful worker ants to repair the damage.

When the other two teams also come up, the protagonist, who is sure that there is no danger, goes underground with his entourage.

As the protagonist gets deeper and deeper, he smells a faint different smell in the lair. These scents are mixed, some are the smell of oleic acid left over after the ants die, some are exclusive to the Big-headed Ant Kingdom, some are the smell of "Dongyang City", and some are scents that the protagonist has never smelled before.

The protagonist patiently searches every nest, and there is not a single ant in sight, not even a single corpse. All the granaries, nurseries, and hatcheries were empty, and not a single hair was left.

Thinking of the smell in the air, the protagonist wonders: Is "Dongyang City" attacked by the enemy? Or did a civil war break out due to the presence of the murderer? The protagonist can't guess. All I know is that the victor moved the entire city away.

It should be the enemy or the murderer who wins, otherwise the defenders of the kingdom will not abandon this nest at will. So where will they move to? Could it be around here? Is there some kind of connection between this and Lao Wang's death and the attack on Roll?

The protagonist has two big heads, and he originally thought that the previous mysteries would be solved after he returned to "Dongyang City". Who would have thought that this has now become an empty city, all the suspects are no longer there, and the truth is suddenly hard to find, and more mysteries follow.

While it was still daytime, the protagonist first ordered Roll to command ten teams to carefully search the vicinity of "Dongyang City", even if they found ants with the same nest smell, they should be on guard.

Before exploring the secrets hidden in Dongyang Castle, the protagonist must first settle his legion.

First of all, the team didn't carry rations, except for the nuts that the protagonist prepared for himself. Originally, the plan was to be able to eat the city's grain after arriving at "Dongyang Castle", but now the granaries are empty. Fortunately, the ants are fine with one meal for a few days, and there is a lot of food on the ground, so it will be too late to start collecting food tomorrow.

The protagonist first orders the other members of the Legion to enter the interior of Dongyang City first, and repair the tunnel and nest room.

The protagonist personally took a part of the guards and carefully dumped the fire in the three palanquins into a large nest near the entrance and exit of the nest, and brought a large number of dry branches to light a small fire.

The fire is placed near the exit to facilitate ventilation, and the protagonist does not want to be poisoned by carbon monoxide in his sleep. However, if it rains in the nest near the exit, it is easy to seep water and extinguish the fire, so it is only a stopgap measure.

Fire safety can only be guaranteed by placing the fire in a safe and waterproof depth, as is the case with the main nest. However, starting a fire underground requires the design and construction of a flue that can both ventilate smoke and prevent rainwater from flowing in, and the protagonist has not carefully looked at the structure of the main nest flue, so he can only redesign it on his own.

The combustion chamber where the protagonist wants to design the fire also needs to be able to achieve some other functions, which poses a great challenge to the design and construction.
