Chapter 9 Going to School
A few days before the start of school every year, a notice of grade registration and payment will be posted outside the walls of the primary school. When I started studying, the tuition fee for the first grade was more than 300 yuan, and 50 yuan was added to the next level. It has been increasing, and it is about 600 yuan in the sixth grade.
In the 90s, children's school fees were a large expense in rural families. What's more, my family has several babies who go to school together at the same time, and the tuition fees add up to about one or two thousand yuan. Parents work very hard, in addition to providing food and clothing for the baby, but also for the baby to study. When the tuition fee is not enough, you can only sell millet to make up for it. The purchase price of 100 catties of dry rice is about 120 yuan. At least a few hundred catties of grain must be sold to cover the tuition.
At that time, farmers who cultivated land in the countryside needed to pay public grain, similar to agricultural taxes. According to the output of 400 catties per mu at that time, it was levied at 15.5%, and the peasants called it public grain, and this part of the public grain was handed over to the state free of charge. However, some villagers pay money directly and keep the grain for their own food.
After my family has paid the public grain, there will still be more than 1,000 catties of grain left when the grain harvest is good. However, because there are nine people in my family, there is not much left except for the food to eat. Of course, there will also be the rainy season, and when the grain harvest is not good, the grain output will be directly halved. At this time, the surplus grain stored in previous years can play an important role.
I was happy at that time, and I was not so poor that I didn't have enough to eat. My parents and sisters are very diligent as a family, so we have a better and better living environment.
When I was in the first grade, the fourth sister was in the third grade, the third sister was in the fifth grade, and the second sister was in the first year of junior high school. The third and fourth sisters and I went to the same school. The second sister won the first place in the school at that time, just in time for a newly built private middle school in the town to enroll. The school recruits students with excellent grades on the condition of free tuition for three years to make a name for the school. At that time, public junior high schools had to pay at least seven or eight hundred yuan a year in tuition, but now there are schools that don't require you to pay tuition to study, and they are free of tuition for three years, which was quite attractive at that time.
After thinking about it again, the second sister decided to go to that private middle school. There are three younger sisters in the family who want to study, and she is free of tuition, which can also reduce the burden on the family, so why not. Fortunately, she made the right choice. The teachers of private middle schools are still good, and they are still media teaching, which is quite an advanced teaching method at that time.
The private middle school only worked hard for three years, and it became famous in the town. Of course, it is mainly due to the fame driven by that group of students with excellent grades. Half of the students in that school were admitted to the key high schools in the town during the high school entrance examination, which was a sensation at the time. Many parents hope that their children can go to school, catch up with their grades, and finally be admitted to key universities.
I was in the first grade, and my second sister happened to be in the first year of junior high school, so the desks and chairs she used in elementary school were just left for me.
My home is about a few minutes away from the elementary school, and it was a bit difficult for a small child to carry a desk and chair from home to school. So on the first day of school, it was the third sister who helped me move the table, and I followed behind her with a chair.
At that time, the tables and chairs were made of wood, and the exterior was simply painted with a layer of green spray paint. After using it for a long time, the appearance is a little scratched. The table and chair I use look old. But I didn't think there was anything at the time, and it would be nice to have to study. What's more, when I was a child, I often wore old clothes that my sisters couldn't wear.
When I arrived at school, the third sister found the class I signed up for and placed the desk in the front row in the middle of the classroom, probably to facilitate my lectures. She finished moving the table and asked me to sit down and wait for the teacher to take class, and I nodded obediently. And the third sister went back to her own class, ready to go to class.
The classrooms were divided into four groups of seats, each with about seven rows of two desks. And I was sitting in the second row of the second group, and my table mate and front table were a pair of cousins. They play very well, but their personalities are a little stubborn. On the first day of school, before class, they chewed gum in their mouths and blew it into bubbles. It was blown up, sucked in and chewed, and blew again, with a burst of 'pop' sounds. I sat down at the table and watched them both in a daze.
At that time, chewing gum was one of the favorite foods of children, and I thought it was fun and delicious. They can often blow bubbles while walking, or they can do their homework while chewing gum.
The two of them probably chewed too many times, and the gum was not sweet. The two of them spit the gum directly into their hands, and then stirred the gum together with their hands, and threw a large lump of gum into my hair. I suddenly felt a little wet and heavy on the top of my hair, and when I touched it with my hand, it was sticky and greasy, and the gum was directly stuck to my hair. I couldn't get it away for a long time. They probably thought it was funny when they looked at me like this, and they couldn't stop laughing.
I was feeling a little uncomfortable, mainly because I couldn't get the gum off my hair, which made me a little frustrated. Coupled with the fact that they were still laughing at me, my mood was even worse. His eyes moistened all of a sudden, and he almost cried. The two of them saw that I was going to cry or not, and the class time was almost up, so they were afraid that I would tell the teacher. Hurry up and help out, trying to get the gum off my hair. As a result, no matter how they tried to get it, the gum still stuck to the ground, and it still hurt my scalp. In addition, the class bell rang, so the two of them could only warn me not to tell the teacher, otherwise they would beat me.
In class, I obediently didn't tell the teacher about it. Moreover, the teacher is not my relative, so I just think that the teacher may not help me teach them, so I feel a little depressed. I feel lonely in the classroom, no one will help me out, and I feel very helpless.
I can't remember exactly how the gum was taken down. Maybe my sister helped me get it off because I stiffened my hair, or maybe I cut my hair and got it off directly. Until now, the memory only stays in that sad moment, and it has been hidden in the depths of the memory and cannot be forgotten. This kind of seemingly small school bullying incident, others may think that this is a child playing, and it is not serious. But it still had a big impact on my physical and mental health when I was a child.
Fortunately, most of the time in elementary school was good. Otherwise, my personality and three views will probably be distorted.
The chair for school did not have a back, so the teacher would ask us to straighten our backs to class. I also said that children do not sit in a good posture, and they often sit crookedly, and when they grow up, their backs will be like their grandparents, hunched over, and walk.
Before going to school, my parents repeatedly explained to me. If you go to school, you have to listen to the teacher, and if you don't obey, you will be expelled from school. So at that time, I listened to the teacher, and during the class, I put my hands on the table, straightened my back, and stared at the teacher and the blackboard, and listened carefully. In the eyes of the teacher, I can be regarded as a good student.
Soon after, the teacher adjusted the student's position according to the height. I was away from my cousins and sat with my playmates from the same village, and I was still very happy. I didn't have the strangeness of the new environment, nor the sense of distance, and slowly adapted to and integrated into the atmosphere and environment of the class.
