Chapter 1: Old Apartments
It is a row of condominiums that are at least 100 years old, with a total of four floors from the basement to three above ground, and sits next to a secluded one-way driveway. Our story takes place in a dilapidated apartment on the ground floor.
This is a two-bedroom traditional English apartment. The downstairs has not been inhabited for a long time, and it has begun to return to the upward tide, making the room of the apartment above cold and damp, without the slightest anger.
It's no wonder that the apartment happens to be built on a steep slope, and the basement level is almost completely hidden by a steep road; If you stand under an apartment, it is difficult to see the windows of the apartment on the lowest floor.
It's an "old apartment" not only because it's very old: the black chimney at the top of the apartment suggests that it was a product of the British Industrial Revolution; This is because the interior of this "old apartment" has not been renovated for at least several decades, and the furniture and decoration of the interior still retain the style of the last century, and have not been affected by the current trendy interior design concept.
The other residents in the vicinity have been replaced with various shiny doors; In contrast, the old apartment's unpainted, completely exposed wood doors stand out.
The old English lock on the door didn't even have a metal frame, just a small black hole. On weekdays, the keyhole just sleeps quietly next to the rusty doorknob, which is quiet and peaceful; Only when the key is inserted coldly, will it suddenly wake up from its sleep, collide with the front end of the key a few times, and make a few muffled sounds.
The gate is old, and his body is not as good as before; Hold the doorknob and push it inward gently, it is difficult to push; Only with a vigorous push can a narrow slit be barely opened.
Walk into this old, traditional English apartment with creaking pale yellow wooden floors underfoot. As soon as you enter, you will find a toilet on your left.
The hallway in the restroom is narrower than the one where you first enter the apartment, allowing only one person to pass through. The door of the bathroom is much higher than that of the bathroom in a normal modern apartment, probably because of the high eaves of the old apartment. The wood used to make the door panel must have been many years old, and the milky white paint on the surface has long been rendered light gray by the years.
There is a latch on the inside of the door that allows the door to be locked from the inside. The bathroom floor is made of the same kind of wood as the corridor, and it is not a good quality material, and some places close to the corner of the wall have been slightly warped, and it seems that the latex used for bonding is no longer working.
Walk two steps into the door of the restroom, turn to the right and you will come across a white standing sink. The sink is more than half a person tall and has two silver faucets sticking out of the front to pump out hot and cold water. A square mirror hung on the tiled wall behind the faucet that was just the size of a person's face, and the paint on the frame had almost completely peeled off, leaving only a black background inlaid with a little remnant of dull yellow.
On one side of the sink there is a square bathtub in the corner, and the outermost side is surrounded by palm-wide boards. The planks closest to the sink were often wet with splashes of water that popped out of the sink, and a thick layer of moss had grown on the bottom, turning from light green to dark green from top to bottom. Fortunately, the inner layer of the bathtub is made of ceramic, which does not affect the use of the bathtub at all after cleaning.
Pure white tiles are piled up on the wall above the bathtub, and several layers of tiles are covered with white wallpaper, on which a thick layer of ash has fallen, and in some places it has begun to turn yellow and black; The glue used for bonding has deteriorated somewhat, so that the rather hard wallpaper is starting to break away from the wall, and several corners are already hanging in the air.
At the end of the tub away from the sink was a white toilet, huddled in the corner. There is a window high on the wall behind the toilet that can only be opened outward, because it is too high, and when you open the window, you need to step on the toilet lid to barely reach the handle.
At the end of the hallway, one on the left and one on the right, there are two bedroom doors facing each other. Facing the wall at the end of the corridor, on the left hand side is a sunny bedroom, which is large in size and has excellent lighting; The bedroom on the right-hand side is much smaller and doesn't let in direct sunlight, but it's just as bright when the weather is nice.
The large bedroom door is fitted with a slender piece of iron and a small iron ring that can be attached to a padlock the size of a beer bottle cap. Above the door frame is an old-fashioned glass skylight. When the lights are turned on indoors, the lights will always fly mischievously out of the skylight, proudly illuminating the half-stark spot outside the door. The dark red carpet on the floor is mixed with light gray stains, and the traces of time are faintly visible.
Half a step to the left of the door is the door of an old-fashioned closet, painted with pure white paint, the smell of stale is not obvious, but the handle on it is broken; A thin nail was nailed to the top, and a mirror with a light brown frame hung from it, which could only show the upper half of the person's body.
The closet was nailed to the wall with three layers of planks, and a vacuum cleaner, a ladder to repair the house, and some charcoal to keep the moisture out were stacked on top of each other.
If you lean against the door and look inside, you will see the only window in this large bedroom. The windows of this old apartment are much higher than those of a normal modern apartment in order to match the high eaves, revealing a lot of views from the courtyard outside the windows.
A few pots of cacti are piled up on the windowsill, adding a lot of life to the interior. In front of the windowsill is a simple desk made of dark brown wood with small drawers on each side.
On the wall next to the desk, there is a small, dying household boiler that has been in use for many years and is about to be scrapped, and it provides hot water to the home by burning natural gas. This boiler is very old, and he is often tired and out of breath when he works, and he keeps shouting loudly; Especially in winter, this old guy often works all night in order to provide enough hot water for the radiators, often making "buzzing" noises.
It is much cheaper to use natural gas to boil water for heating than to use electric heating that does not make much noise. So, even though he often complained loudly about how hard the work was, this old guy was never abandoned by the landlord, and had been hanging proudly in the corner for many years, and he had already looked like he was relying on the old and selling the old.
The oldest fireplace built in the original interior has been plugged up and turned into part of the wall. An old loveseat snuggles gently against the newly "remodeled" wall, the crimson linen that has begun to fade, as if to show how it has weathered over the years.
A black wardrobe stood quietly in the corner next to the sofa, with a deep crack in the innermost plank, and the bottom board had been completely removed, leaving only a stick across the wardrobe for hanging hangers.
Next to the wardrobe lies a simple "bed". It's called a "bed" simply because it can hold up to two people on it. Actually, it was just a thick, stiff plank with a thick mattress on it.
Next to the edge of the "bed" is a small bedside table with two drawers for things. A small off-white lamp was placed on the bedside table to serve as a bedside lamp. Next to the bedside table, near the doorway, there is a wardrobe made of pure white wooden boards, which is old but sturdy, and can hang a lot of clothes in it.
A small bedroom is much smaller than a large and spacious bedroom. Pushing open the old yellowed bedroom door, stepping on the red carpet with beige snowflake pattern, there is a strong British retro style.
In the corner on the left-hand side of the doorway lies a "bed": a rectangular wooden board covered with a thick mattress.
At the foot of the bed are two plain brown linen chairs, nestled warmly together with each other. A small light yellow desk sits peacefully in the corner, accompanied by a small light yellow swivel chair.
The only window in the house opened onto the door to the small bedroom. The window was much narrower than the one in the large bedroom, but still tall: standing on the windowsill just above the floor, with arms outstretched, the very top of the window could not be reached with either hand. The windows are of this size to ensure that this small bedroom is bright enough on a sunny day.
On the other side of the window stood a dark brown bookshelf, with four floors, the top three narrower enough to fit a normal-sized book; The bottom layer is very wide enough to fit many large books.
Next to the desk stood a chestnut wardrobe, the surface of which was brightly painted. It is not difficult to find that it is the most "young" friend placed in this apartment.
On the wall at the top of the radiator next to the wardrobe hangs a dark brown mirror, which is oval in shape, which can reflect half of the person's body.
If you close the door of the small bedroom and stand with your back to the door, you can touch the doorknob of the door next to you by raising your left arm. The door to this room is relatively new, repainted with creamy white paint, and inside is the living room of this apartment.
The first thing that catches your eye when you walk inside is a bronze upright piano that was built in the UK decades ago. There is a lock on the lid, but it is broken, and there is no key, but the broken lock does not interfere with the normal use of the piano.
In front of the piano is a light green linen chair, which is both warm and comfortable to sit on. There is a small wooden round table in the small open space behind the linen chair, the top is painted with a layer of milky white paint, and three small chairs of the same color are placed next to it.
On one side of these tables and chairs hangs an impressionist oil painting in light pink and creamy white, with a few shy wild lilies faintly visible. It's just right to hang this painting, decorating this room full of humidity and cold with warmth and tenderness, a far cry from the dark green carpet that permeates the cold air.
The building dates back to the Industrial Revolution in the UK. In those days, the British relied on the fireplace in the house for heating. According to the original design, there was a large fireplace in the center of the living room to heat the room, and the thick chimney at the top went straight to the ceiling and reached the top roof of the apartment. Today, the fireplace has been plugged with bricks and the surface has been painted with pure white paint, and it looks like a large piece of the wall in the living room has sunken inward.
In the corner of the room by the window, there is a sofa, which is exactly the same color and material as in the large bedroom, only slightly wider than that, with three cushions. In front of the sofa was a small round coffee table, dark brown, supported by three black wooden sticks.
On the wall at the top of the sofa is a nailed impressionist painting in navy blue. A large group of crimson pedestrians of all kinds can be seen walking hurriedly in the blue-gray torrential rain, and the road wet by the heavy rain is smeared with navy blue paint, making it look wet and slippery.
The use of cool colors such as navy blue as the main color of the painting is probably inspired by the cold showers, wet ground and bitter cold winds that are common in the English city of Mutas. In many cases, the continuous rain all day long plunges the gray city buildings into endless cold. The dense crimson pedestrians walking along the road, contrasting with the navy blue showers, bring the city to life and vividly depict the fast-paced life of the city of Mutas.
The door to the living room is facing the kitchen door, and the door to the small bedroom is separated from each other. The handle on the kitchen door was covered with a layer of silver lacquer, but it had become a little blackened by the erosion of time. The door panel is thick, and as the years go by, some black dotted stains have accumulated on the bottom, which is difficult to clean all at once.
The traditional British diet is much more boring than in many other European countries, and the locals don't like to cook very much, which is why the kitchen, an integral part of every apartment, occupies such a small area in this traditional British old house, which can only accommodate three or two people standing in it.
On the left-hand side of the door, there is a small household refrigerator resting on a platform made of composite panels, and a small automatic washing machine is located under the platform.
The platform is glued tightly to the wall, and a recess is fitted with a square sink with a long faucet poking out of the inside of the sink to drain hot and cold water.
Next to the sink is a plastic rack where you can put cutlery, and you can put several plates and several large bowls and many chopsticks at the same time. The cupboard under the sink holds kitchen detergent and laundry detergent; The navy blue tiles above were polished to a shiny finish.
A row of cabinets is neatly fastened to the wall above the tiles, and the four cream-colored doors are fitted with silver handles, filled with all kinds of dishes and utensils for cooking.
On the wall facing the gate hangs a pull-out hood. A brass-colored pencil-shaped handle sits across the bottom of an orange board. The wooden board looks like the drawer of an ordinary desk, and when the handle is pulled, accompanied by a "rumbling" sound, the small orange bulbs on the four corners of the range hood seem to suddenly open their eyes, and they light up all at once.
On each side of the hood is a cupboard with a door that houses a variety of cooking pots.
The electric hob is placed directly below the hood, and four stoves of different sizes can be used at the same time, and the surrounding stainless steel surface is polished. The hob tray is installed in the recess of the platform, and on the sides are placed a lot of seasonings: oil, salt, sauce, vinegar, pepper, paprika......
There is a boxy oven underneath the electric hob, and through the thick glass door of the oven, it is impossible to see what's inside; When the oven is running, the orange light inside the oven will illuminate the inside of the oven, so that the things being baked can be seen clearly.
Next to the oven, a small dryer squatted under the platform in the corner of the kitchen. Living in a cold, damp island country like the UK, it's very convenient to have a machine ready to dry wet clothes.
In front of the dryer stood a half-meter-high light gray garbage can against the wall. On weekdays, if the garbage bag inside is changed frequently, there will be no bad smell in the kitchen.
This old two-bedroom apartment is shabby but occupies a great location. It is easily accessible from many of the buildings of Mutas University and takes less than a few minutes to walk.
As the saying goes, "the building near the water gets the moon first". This dilapidated old apartment is a veritable "feng shui treasure" for the students of Mutas University!
