Chapter 10 Trip to the War Zone

First, to Songbu

Since August, the enemy's offensive has progressed, and Wuchang has been bombarded continuously, so that Wuchang has become almost a dead city. ** Authorities and citizens, some evacuated to the rear, some moved to Hankow on the other side. The urban area of Hankou, because of the cover of the concession and enemy property, has never been bombed, but has shown a temporary abnormal prosperity.

After the Political Department distributed a part of it to Hengshan, it soon moved to Mitsui & Co., Ltd., an enemy property near the Hanguan Wharf on the Hankou River. It was a large four-story building, and the fourth floor was the roof room, where some insignificant goods and furniture were piled up. The third hall has the most people, occupying the entire third floor. On the second floor are the offices of the ministers and deputy ministers, the secretary's office and the first and second halls. Half of the ground floor is the General Affairs Office, and the other half is the General Relief Association.

Our work is moving forward according to plan. Tan Hualin of the headquarters of the department is stepping up the training of the team, the war literature department is arranging propaganda stations, the studio is recruiting screening teams, the consolation of winter clothes is being recruited by the consolation association, the production of the large mural of the Yellow Crane Tower, the compilation of "A Year of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression", and the collection and sorting of the "77" condolence donations have made the comrades in the hall seriously reduce the boredom of having nothing to do. But among those, consolation work can be regarded as the central work.

In early September, I myself participated in the Fifth War Zone of the Northern Battlefield of the Comfort Labor Group of the Three Towns of Wuhan. At that time, the commander's headquarters was in Songbu. There were quite a lot of people who went, men, women and children, and even people brought consolation goods, and two truckloads were full. This was organized by party and government organs and mass organizations, and the history of the organization is already vague.

Departing in the afternoon, we arrived in Songbu when it was dark. I saw Li Zongren in an ancestral hall. He was very excited, and gave everyone a one-foot-sized photo taken in Taierzhuang. The look in the photo is very likely, with his left hand supporting his waist, and his right hand holding the big station sign of the railway station, on which the words "Taierzhuang" are written horizontally. He personally wrote on each sheet the words "Mr. (Ms.) Save, Li Zongren respectfully" and other words. I secretly admired him in my heart: if there was to be a self-propaganda department, this rural teacher would be fully qualified to be a minister.

Everyone was saved for a hearty dinner, as well as soda crackers, sardines, fresh fruits, etc., which ordinary people could not necessarily eat even in the back. When I lived in the rear, there was a word of mouth that "the front is tight, the rear is all eaten", and when I came to the front, I figured out the situation in front a little, and the front was not "tight", but also "eat". However, I should keep some of my words. We're not really at the front, and we're just the commander's headquarters.

But there's one thing to be thankful for.

It had been a full year since the official start of the war between China and Japan, and I was still the one in charge of directing the work against the enemy, but it was only here that I saw a Japanese prisoner for the first time. I am really grateful, and when everyone has eaten, the headquarters took out this specimen, so that everyone can feast their eyes, and it seems that everyone is especially happy.

The captive was a young man, about thirty years old. At first glance, it's not too vicious, but a little covetous. We told him to sit in Japanese, and he sat down with a comforting look. Bringing him a cigarette, he said "Alexadot" (thank you) and smoked it with a good taste.

"Don't be afraid, we are going to treat you well. The war is not your fault, it is the warlords' fault. When the war is over, we're going to send you back again. I said to him calmly.

The captives said that he was a small businessman in Osaka, who had only enlisted in the army in March this year, and had traveled from Korea to Shenyang and then to the Kannai battlefield, where he was soon captured. As he spoke, he scoured up a piece of paper from his body and handed it to me, supposedly found in the trenches.

I took it and looked at it, and saw that it was one of the six types of "passes" issued by the Third Hall. There are drawings on it, and there are translations of the preferential treatment of prisoners. It made me almost get carried away. Well, it's a pity that there is no magnesium camera, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to hold my left hand on my waist and hold hands with my right hand with this captive gentleman and take a picture? Who can say that this is not the "Taierzhuang" of our three halls?

And the captives also said some things that were not very important, and I don't remember it clearly. I just remember that after breaking up with the captives, we got into the truck again and rushed back to Wuhan overnight. When I arrived in Wuhan, it was dawn the next day.

Second, to Xishui

In mid-September, the General Association of Workers organized a consolation group from the north and south of the battlefield, and at the same time set off separately, this time on a larger scale, with the participation of not only representatives of various organs and organizations, but also theater teams and screening teams. I myself had been to the Northern Battlefield, so I joined the group that went to the Southern Battlefield.

But I'll start with a group of battles to the north. Nai Chao participated in this group. I'm going to transcribe his notes here, because they're first-hand:

"On September 17, Tongsha Qianli, Qian Junrui and others set off for the Fifth War Zone. On the 18th, in Songbu, he met Jinshan, Wang Ying and many other cultural workers. He participated in the '918' commemorative meeting organized by the Political Department of the theater in response to the occasion, and only a dozen or so people attended the meeting. Our participation took them by surprise. ”

"On the 19th, I comforted the independent camp and taught the Guangxi Army Japanese to shout."

"Go to the Xishui front line on the 20th."

"Late on the night of the 21st, Li Zongren was invited to talk at the front-line command post."

"On the 22nd, I presented the flag, saw General Li Pinxian, and went to the front-line artillery position."

"On the 23rd, when I returned to Songbu, I retreated more than 100 kilometers from the front-line command post. Talk with Secretary Li and Team Leader Yang of the Political Department of the Theater of Operations. They are the people of the He Zhenhan system, and they are notorious for beating dogs and eating in front. ”

"On the 24th, enemy planes attacked Songbu and dropped about 20 meters into hiding. The members of the 4th and 6th teams of the drama team working here helped to rescue the wounded. One comrade was sacrificed in the sixth team of the drama. ”

"On the 25th, I went to the commander's headquarters to negotiate the vehicle to return to Wuhan, but was bombed by enemy planes again."

"On the 26th, I left Songbu and returned to Hankou, and arrived at the fashion in the morning light."

Although this handbook is very brief, it is indeed the most rare information. (I would like to tell the reader that I wrote this memoir almost entirely from memory, and I couldn't even get a copy of it in the newspapers of the time.) From here, we can see that our friends who went to the northern battlefield have indeed been to the front line, and it seems that the commander's command post has also been moved to the front line of Xishui.

Another thing worth noting is that "teaching the Guangxi Army Japanese to shout", this work was at least approved by those who were in charge of the front line of the Fifth Theater of Operations, if not at their request. This is not something to be taken lightly.

Propaganda against the enemy should be a very important central task in war. We are primarily responsible for this work, and although there is no one to compete with us, we are not always fully coordinated.

We have laid down the following steps for this work: (1) to study the enemy's situation; (2) To guide the work at all levels and produce publicity materials; (3) educating prisoners; (4) Organize Japanese soldiers to oppose the war. But this work was done very little during the Wuhan period. We have compiled and printed the "Instructions for Propaganda Against the Enemy" and the "Collection of Propaganda Slogans and Slogans against the Enemy" and distributed them to political workers at all levels. In addition, countless slogans, leaflets, and six kinds of color passes (painted by Ye Qianyu and Liang Baibo) were printed, each with four or five million copies. However, the agencies that must cooperate with us can you off. The first is that the Aviation Committee is irresponsible and rarely distributes it with aircraft. The second is that the logistics department is irresponsible, hoarding and refusing to transport to the front. Then there is the irresponsibility ahead, some are used to paste the walls, and some are thrown away at will. Someone once picked up a few large bundles from the front and returned them to us.

Captives were even more inaccessible. The prisoners are under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Military Affairs, and we have suggested many times that we should organize small-scale field shelters in order to carry out their work, but they have all been refuted. At the time of the "victory of Taierzhuang", Xu Peigen, director of the Second Department of the Military Command Department, called and said that a large number of prisoners would cross the border and asked us to prepare propaganda. For this reason, he mobilized a cartoon propaganda team to work overnight and went to Dazhimen Station to post it the next day. As a result, not even a single captive was seen.

Naturally, there are also captives, who are imprisoned in Changde and Xi'an, which are too far away from us. Before the retreat from Wuhan, we had only sent people to inspect each other once. Lu Di and Liao Tiren went to Changde, and Lu Di also wrote a book "Peace Village Record", which was later serialized in Guilin's "Salvation Daily". As for the selection of some of the prisoners in Changde to organize the "Anti-War League", that was the work after arriving in Chongqing.

Nai Chao is one of the main persons in charge of the enemy's work, and when he arrived at the front, he also took care of his own work in addition to comfort. He once told me that the Fifth Theater was still quite serious about its work against the enemy, and that the Xishui Front had indeed seen our Japanese leaflets distributed on the positions, but unfortunately they were dispersed a little too early.

What Nai Chao saw this time, and the prisoner I saw when I went to Songbu last time, searched out the pass from his body, which can be said to be substantially confirmed.

Third, to Yangxin

I joined the Southern Battlefield Comfort Mission, but I set off two days earlier. Luckily for me, I kept a diary for a few days, and not only did I not throw it away, but I took it with me. Naturally, this will take the time out of my memories.

Thursday, September 15

At noon, the two persons in charge of the women's task force had dinner in another village. After dinner, when he went to Yunxiu's place to rest for a while, Zhu Jiefu rushed to say that Xie Renzhao had called, and the car that had come to greet him in front of him had to drive back, and they would meet at Jardine Street before 3 o'clock. It was already two o'clock when I looked at my watch, so I decided to set off. Kai Liqun returned to Janssen Garden, hurriedly packed his luggage, and took a car to Jardine Street. Stop by the International Publicity Office to make an appointment with Zeng Xu. peers, Zeng Xubai readily promised. A few minutes before leaving, he returned to the hall to say goodbye to the three division chiefs. Hu Yuzhi originally planned to resign due to illness, but he had already gone to the hall to inspect the matter.

"Broke up with Liqun by the river. It was nearly four o'clock when I crossed the river, and I set off by car No. 2. But as soon as the car started, an air raid siren came. One of the drivers volunteered, 'Just get out of town!' So the passengers were concentrated in one car, drove at full speed, and galloped through Wuchang City. After leaving the market, there were several trucks in front of him, and the driver was quite anxious: 'This is too big!' Before he could say anything, he exclaimed, 'Oh! Aren't the three in front of you enemy planes? Today is in trouble. 'Stop now. Everyone got out of the car, and there were three planes flying in the clouds. The crowd dispersed, and the nose flew eastward. When it was time to walk back to the road, the nose of the plane turned to the west, and the crowd dispersed in all directions. ”

"The sky was full of white clouds, and there were dark clouds scattered from time to time. The enemy planes maneuvered around to reconnoitre, but the Russians disappeared in an instant, and the companions resolutely got into the car and galloped forward despite the danger. ”

"When I arrived in Xianning, it was already dark. Fold into the city for dinner. After eating, I returned to the road, and after walking a short distance, the wheels were deflated, and I broke down for about an hour, and continued to move forward after changing the tires. The car broke down again, but the left front wheel took off four screws, and only one remained, and the tire was slanted. The driver got out of the car and removed a screw from each of the other three wheels to make amends, and barely survived. Exactly, there is a poem as proof:

Five people's lives are sent to a snail, and there are many strange things tonight.

The battle on the battlefield is hard, and the classic car is Fei Zhangluo.

"I arrived at my destination at half past twelve and slept in a very simple school in Beitutang."

This destination is Yangxin, where the headquarters of the commander of the Ninth Theater is located, and in fact, it is still far, far away from the front line. The north earth pond is the place name, in the north of the rich water, the south ground of the water is the south earth pond. The memory is blurred, and I don't remember the situation of the "very simple little school" at all.

Readers may ask, why did I go to the war zone alone to invite Zeng Xubai? Who is Zeng Xubai? This may be explained a little bit here.

At that time, Zeng Xubai and Dong Xianguang were working in the International Propaganda Department, which was systematically subordinate to the Propaganda Department of the Kuomintang, but in fact it was an independent organ. Since the establishment of the Third Office, the National Propaganda Office has cooperated with us in international publicity. Foreign journalists are convened every Monday to report on military and political situations, which are co-sponsored by the two agencies. At the weekly publicity meeting, Dong and Zeng also participated in the routine. We also worked together on a pictorial magazine, edited by Ye Qianyu of the Third Hall, and published by the Commercial Press, with explanations in English and Russian. (The compilation of this pictorial was later halted because Chiang was not satisfied.) )

Because of this, Zeng Xubai and I often meet, and although we don't have any friendship, we don't have any bad feelings. He once told me that there was an opportunity to go to the front, so I invited him. His father is Zeng Pu, the author of "The Flower of the Sea of Evil", which may also be regarded as a kind of literary karma, right?

Who Xie Renzhao is, maybe it is also worth introducing. During the Northern Expedition, this man worked as a clerk in the Nanchang General Political Department I presided over, and he was a "leftist" element at that time. After the defeat of the Revolution, I heard that he lived in the United States for several years, and only returned to China when the War of Resistance began. He was clinging to Chen Cheng. But he also wavered, sometimes engaging in the National Diplomacy Association and praising Wu Tiecheng; From time to time, he engaged in cultural work and praised Liang Hancao. He Fang Zhi is a fellow villager and has also engaged in party affairs together. I don't know, I don't know which "unification" he belongs to.

Fourth, in Yangxin

I beg your pardon for transcribing my own diary.

Friday on the 16th

"In the morning, I went out for a walk with Zeng Xubai, walked to the yarn hat box, and in a large ancestral hall, I saw Shi Bei, the chief of staff. (This man had met in the Eastern Battlefield, when he was serving as Xue Yue's chief of staff.) Reserve for morning porridge. Soon after the return, Chen Cheng and Zhu Daijie and Xie Renzhao came together and talked for a long time. (Zhu Daijie was an old colleague of the Political Department during the Northern Expedition, and was forced to leave his post because of Chiang's anger, and studied in the Soviet Union for a few years, but somehow became a Trotskyist suspect and returned.) )”

"There are air raids from time to time, and whistles are used as alarms."

"After lunch, I had nothing to do, and I went out with Zeng Xubai again. A short walk to the south, a small river is crossed, which is the famous rich water in the map. The water is shallow and the river is narrow, and it could have been waded in vain, but there is a boat crossing. The hull is quite large, which is not commensurate with the water. Crossing the river by boat is the South Tutang. There are many red-letter slogans on the walls of people's houses, and they are also seen in Beitutang in the morning, and it is suspected that there is a mobile propaganda team that has worked here, but what I saw in Nantutang, one of them clearly signed the words "The 13th Branch of the 10th District of Yangxin County of the Communist Party of China", and then it suddenly dawned on me that this place was once a Soviet area. ”

On the way, I saw an old man in neat clothes, and asked him, which was quite able to tell the past in detail. Yan Peng Dehuai was here. There are many guerrillas fighting here. After the Red Army retreated, Murakami was robbed, and more than half of the people were slaughtered. ”

"Straight up along the rich water, I feel that the mountain atmosphere is pleasant. But the mountains are shallow, and most of them are removed, and sweet potatoes are planted. There are those who are straight to the top, and sweet potatoes are also planted to the top. Those who are knowledgeable may be known as waste utilization, but in fact it is the source of flooding, which is a pity. ”

"The second team of the Political Work Brigade originally invited Yu to go to talk at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, but it was too late to return, and his residence was moved to Chongde Temple. The former person in charge, Weng Cong, came to welcome him from his six relatives and was about to go together, Chen Cheng sent someone to pick him up, and then went to the yarn hat box for dinner. After eating, I went to Xujiatuo, where the brigade was stationed, and Zhu Daijie walked along. Farewell to the brothers and sisters of the team, it has been a year in an instant, and they are reunited after a long absence, and the love is more than flesh and blood, and there are even those who cry because of gratitude. At the meeting, I listened to the team members' reports and raised questions to discuss, which was very sincere. ”

"It's past 12 o'clock at the destination, and I am about to go to bed, when a delegation from all walks of life in Wuhan arrives."

"Chen Cheng came, greeted Yu Tong, and fell asleep at three o'clock because of the revisit."

Liqun sent Yu a sweater, a flashlight, a blanket, and a mosquito net, which was like a treasure. It was cold in the morning, and only the royal jacket in the morning and evening was no longer helpful, but I heard that the front-line soldiers were still wearing more single clothes. ”

I'm going to explain the political work brigade here.

This is the field service regiment that Chen Cheng asked me to organize for him during the Battle of Songhu, the head of the regiment was Yuan Wenbin at the beginning, and there were about 50 male and female members, who were a group of patriotic young people studying in Shanghai. The service group led by Qian Yishi and Du Shousu was established under Zhang Fakui's subordinates and was a fraternal organization. That one was founded in Pudong, and this one was founded in Kunshan. After serving on the battlefield for a year, the regimental members endured hardships and stood hard work, lived the same life as soldiers, and did a lot of work. Even Chen Cheng himself often praised them to me. Yet they are always discriminated against.

Everyone knows that the Kuomintang has a common rule in the evaluation of personnel: The more people who can endure hardships and stand hard work, the more suspicious they are of the Communist Party. Therefore, most of the people in this team have a red hat on their heads.

After the restoration of the Political Department, the head of the regiment, Yuan Wenbin (who was later executed by the reactionaries in northern Jiangsu, and the location of the corpse is unknown), joined the work of the Third Department, and the service regiment was changed to Weng Congliu. Some of the regiment members died, some were discharged, and the number was reduced to only 234 remaining.

After the establishment of the Ninth War Zone, the Kuomintang itself set up a political work brigade in an attempt to merge them, but it was unsuccessful, so it was changed to the second team of the political work brigade, and the first team was needless to say that the team of those party young masters. Weng retired from the sixth to the waiter of the theater command, and the second team was led by a female member surnamed Lu.

But after the group moved positions in Wuhan, it was finally disbanded soon after. I lost my memory of the whereabouts of the players. I only remember that Weng Congliu, who left the team earlier, later became the manager of the Guilin Salvation Daily, and I don't know what happened after that.

Fifth, to Wuning

Saturday 17th

"In the morning, the delegation discussed and planned to meet Chen Cheng first. Inquire about Chen by phone, and the words will come naturally. We talked for a long time. There will be enemy planes attacking, dropping bombs nearby, and a deputy official will report: There are six enemy planes, three of which are dropping bombs on Yangxin Town, and three are hovering on the yarn hat box. "The multitude was scattered by its own eyes." Ma Yanxiang, Lu Digan, and Lin Litian went to Yangxin Town to see the situation after the bombing. Guiyunyang New Town is only a straight village. Enemy planes dropped bombs along the town, but only hit the head and tail of the town, and the rest landed on the river outside the village, and there were no casualties. ”

"For a while, I swam with Ludi, Zhu Jiefu and others in rich water, and the deepest part of the water was only up to the chest."

"The flag-laying ceremony was originally planned to be held at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, but it was changed to 5 o'clock because the enemy planes were afraid of returning. At around three o'clock, Zhu Daijie came to visit and made an appointment to go out for a boat trip. Only sit on the riverside for an hour, and return. ”

"At the flag-laying ceremony, I was recommended as the chairman, and Li Dequan presented the flag and delivered a speech, which was quite organized. Eat at the end of the ceremony. After eating, he said goodbye to everyone and accompanied Chen Cheng to Wuning. It was nine o'clock when I drove. Passing through Wuning City at night, he arrived at his destination at half past two o'clock. ”

"Staying at the front command post, waiting for Zhu Jiefu to unpack his luggage, but he didn't arrive, and he was quite anxious. Use only a blanket to warm up. There were constant phone calls in the room all night long. ”

"18th Sunday"

"I only slept two hours last night. I got up at seven o'clock, finished washing, and was overjoyed to see the official servant bringing his luggage. He said that the truck had gone the wrong way, and he had already gone to bed when he came, so he was not disturbed. After breakfast, Chen Chengyan Wang Fangzhou (i.e., Wang Lingji, the current chairman of Sichuan Province, who is the same county as Yu and is a so-called 'world friend') was stationed nearby, and asked Zhu Daijie to be a guide and accompany Yu to visit, and Zeng Xubai also went with him. A car came in front of you. When he arrived at Weng's house, he had to meet Zhang Zhihe, but Wang was not there, and Gai had already gone to the command post. On the way, he encountered his car, which can be said to be lost. ”

After retaining the lunch, I returned to the original car, and met Wang Fangzhou on the way, as usual, with pills and glasses, and complained about his bitterness in a mouthful of Jiading words. It is said that the equipment is not yet ready, and the enemy is concentrating fire on the other line. Friendly forces are selfish and do not care about each other. Miscellaneous and descendant lines are treated differently. Miscellaneous lines block the front, and the descendants are the rear team. Just send to death, just send to death. …… Fu was invited back to Weng's house for dinner. It was half past seven o'clock. ”

"19th Monday"

"At seven o'clock in the morning, I went to Weng's house with Chen Cheng and spoke to Wang Fangzhou's cadres."

"They are all Sichuan villagers, but the military appearance is not very tidy."

"It's raining, and I'll return after lunch. After returning, he went to the Political Work Brigade, and Zhu Daijie went back together. There were many sick people, 21 of the 23 people had malaria, and most of them were swollen due to the lack of quinine. On the way, he saw that there was still fresh corn, and Captain Lu allowed him to enjoy it, so he sent someone to ask for it five miles away. It was getting late, Chen Cheng sent someone to pick me up, and when I had dinner, I had to return. It's a pity that corn didn't appreciate it. ”

After the meal, Chen Yuetong went to Wuning City to speak to the 3rd and 15th Divisions of the Eighth Army. This army is Chen Yan's lineage, and the commander is Li Yutang, a Shandong Han, when he arrives at the military headquarters, he greets him outside the door, and he is respectful. ”

"At night, I received a call from Dong Xianguang in Hankou, saying that Britain and France did not want to fight, and wanted to use peaceful means to solve the problems between Germany and the Czech Republic, which was bound to sacrifice the Czech Republic."

Tuesday of the 20th Week

"It's raining lightly. In the morning, I went out for a walk with Zhu Daijie and Zeng Xubai, and returned after eleven o'clock. Brandy at noon. ”

In the afternoon, the political work brigade sent boiled corn, and I was overjoyed and shared. I ate four of them myself. ”

"Talk to Xie Ranzhi about Qu Qiubai and other friends."

"Reuse brandy at dinner. After the meal, talk about the ghost. ”

"Yesterday and today, the car in front of the cloud was sold out, and I couldn't move, so I can go back to Wuhan about tomorrow."

6. Return to Wuhan

The diary was interrupted after only six days from the 15th to the 20th.

It seems that it will be early in the morning of the 21st when we leave for Wuhan. A large truck, except for my fellow Zeng Xubai, there are less than half a dozen passengers. When I left, the people of the political work brigade came to see them off, and even the cold and hot ones came, which was really indescribably reluctant.

We did not take the same route on our way home, but took a detour through Xiushui, Pingjiang, Changsha, and then followed the Yuehan Road back to Wuhan.

When he arrived in Changsha, he met Zhang Zhizhong, and he was invited to dinner in his mansion outside the city, and was entertained to stay overnight in the upstairs of the YMCA.

Chen Cheng arranged such a detour for us on the way back, but why we walked like this, I still don't understand the meaning. Is it because the truck has a different mission, or is it to avoid the danger of being bombed on the way?

Looking back at the life in the war zone in the past few days, it is too empty. I have repeatedly asked to go to the real front line to see it, but I have not been invited. It is said to be dangerous, and it is not necessary. is hospitalized every day, especially Zhu Daijie and Xie Renzhao, who follow each other day and night, and they are affectionate. It's just that when I was in Wuning, my friends from the Political Work Brigade told me: They are not serving you, but watching you. Perhaps? But that's too hard.

He returned to Wuhan on the 23rd. The next day was the seventh day of the Expanded Publicity Week for the 7th Anniversary of 918. I broadcast it once that night under the title "The Responsibility of the People in the Rear" (included in the "Feather Book Collection"), and reported what I had seen and heard in the war zone. That would add more or less to the hollowness of my diary.

There was a mention of the enemy situation in the Southern Theater of Operations. It is said that the enemy's 9th Division, 106th Division, and Hatian Detachment were almost completely annihilated. The 11th Division, the 16th Division, and the Guards Division have recently arrived. However, the morale of the enemy troops was low, and there was a "disease-making" campaign. Malaria and dysentery were abundant on the front line, and the enemy soldiers were worried about feeding mosquitoes or catching colds in order to move to the rear to recuperate.

Our army, however, was very valiant, and the southern region was mountainous, and every time we fought with the enemy for a hill, we had four or five times of repeated gains and losses. There is a culture of minor injuries not getting out of the line of fire. For example, battalion commander Li Shulan fought in the Minshan and Dawu areas, and was seriously wounded, and his superiors ordered him to go to the rear for treatment, but battalion commander Li refused.

There is a lot of suffering from diseases ahead, but there is little suffering from medicines. The enemy often used poison gas, sometimes even by aircraft. The weather is getting colder, and the soldiers are still wearing single clothes, and at most there is only a military blanket at night. The problem is quite serious.

Most of these are heard, and most of them come from Chen Cheng's mouth. As for the two questions about cold and sickness, I have seen and experienced them with my own eyes. I admit that this is a serious problem. There is no denying that the logistics were not done well. The soldiers in front of them are in the right situation, so they naturally want to complain, but the responsible people in the rear are secretive, for fear that others will mention it.

I remember that not long before I went to the war zone, Shen Heng Lao and Zou Taofen also went to the Ninth War Zone. When he returned to Wuhan, Mr. Heng made a conversation with reporters, saying that the situation of cold and illness was very serious ahead. It actually aroused the anger of the "old man", saying that it was disturbing the morale of the army and increasing the morale of the enemy, and he was bitterly refuted in the newspapers.

Therefore, I also considered the in-depth problem of this avoidance of medical treatment when I broadcast it, but I put it mildly, and it didn't offend the scales of that area.

Here, I have to record a small interjection.

The truck driver who transported us back to Wuhan was a young overseas Chinese who had returned from Manila to serve in China. According to him, he still has his own car in Manila. After returning to China, he was sent to serve in the Ninth War Zone. Soon I got malaria, which was every two days. On the day back to Wuchang, he fell ill on the way, and I advised him to stop and rest, but he refused: because he was in a hurry to get a car. So when it was cold, he wrapped the military blanket around his body and still drove away. When there was a big fever, I couldn't support it anymore, so I had to stop the car and fall asleep in the grass on the side of the road for more than an hour.

The name of this driver, unfortunately I have forgotten it now. Isn't his patriotic fervor something to sing about? But I dare to believe that this friend must have been treated in front of the Communist Party. Whether he later returned to Manila, I don't know how to be sure.
