The Paris Affair Chapter 16: Father and Son (1)
As a condition for Bella to accompany Elena to buy clothes before, Elena is going to the bookstore with Bella this time.
A new bookstore recently opened in the art district on the south bank of the Seine.
It is known as an art district not only because of the many shops selling painting tools and musical instruments, but also because of the variety of works of art, such as sculptures and murals.
Walking along the riverbank, you can meet many artists sketching along the way.
Some of them have their first charcoal pencils, some hold palettes, and they are trying to incorporate the scenery in front of them into their canvases.
Seeing this pomp and circumstance, Bella remembered that she had seen similar scenes in Florence and Vienna before.
It seems that no matter where you are, there are some people who pursue art.
Mr. Pickle of the bookstore is a middle-aged man in his forties with a black beard. Although he looks rough, he is actually a delicate person. He keeps all the books in the store neat and tidy, and he also cleans frequently to keep the environment clean and tidy.
There is a huge plane tree in front of the bookstore, which looks to be at least a hundred years old.
The dense foliage grows on the vigorous trunk of the tree, reflecting the vitality of nature.
Under the plane tree, a few painting enthusiasts gathered, holding brushes and drawing various lines and color blocks on the propped up canvas.
There is a lark perched on the trunk of a tree, blending in with the view of the trees.
The artists also incorporated it into their frames.
Bella didn't have any particular knowledge of painting, but she was surprised that the lark would stay there for so long.
The surroundings were relatively quiet, and several artists were concentrating on painting, so Bella could not bother to disturb her, so she tiptoed past the side and turned right into Picker's bookstore.
"Welcome." Pickle greeted him warmly, "It's Miss Carlos, what books are you looking for this time?"
It seems that although it has only recently opened, Bella has already been a regular here.
"Are there any books about the Hundred Years' War?" Bella asked.
"Oh? Miss Carlos wants to know about the history between England and France?" Pickle stroked his beard with his hand, "What do you want to know about?"
The Hundred Years' War refers to a series of wars between England and France that took place between the 14th and 15th centuries. At that time, France was ruled by the Valois dynasty and England by the Plantagenet dynasty, and the two countries were intermittently larger for more than a hundred years, with the main battlefields in the north-central part of France. During this century-long military confrontation, the European mode of combat mentality gradually changed, most notably from the chain mail at the beginning of the war to the plate armor later, and in the later stage of the war, the French army gained an advantage by the large-scale use of gunpowder. These new types of weapons have a leading position in the world in terms of science and technology.
"Do you have any technical information?" Bella asked, "Weapons or mechanical inventions or something."
"Technically...... Pickle thought for a moment, then replied, "It doesn't seem like much. Although during that period, there were great developments in weaponry and warfare technology, but at present, few people have specialized in this aspect. Maybe there will be in the future, but there are no books on this yet."
"That's right......" Bella thought.
Elena was not interested in these historical subjects, but instead asked Pickle if he had any recommended storybooks or something.
Just then, a man in his thirties rushed into the store.
"Pickle! Pickle!" Officer Christopher shouted in a panic.
"What's wrong with you, Officer Christopher?"
Seeing Christopher's nervous look, Pickle felt that something serious must have happened.
"Give me a copy of the spell!" Christopher said.
"Huh? You're not kidding?" Pickle was surprised, "How could there be such a thing?"
Spells are a relatively unpopular field of magic, and few people study it, let alone compile relevant scientific materials, except for the Segovia family in the Iberian Peninsula.
"Anyway, find me books on curses." Christopher looked very anxious.
"Is there something going on?" Elena asked curiously.
"Ah, it's Miss Medici and Miss Carlos. I'm sorry I was in too much of a hurry to notice both."
"I just heard you mention the curse, do you have any difficulties?"
"Truth be told, someone has cursed my son." Officer Christopher replied, "He's bedridden right now."
"Is there such a thing?"
"yes, I can't believe it, but it's weird."
Immediately afterward, Officer Christopher briefed Bella and Elena on what had happened.
Just last night, when Officer Christopher returned home from his usual rounds, he found his son, Daniel, unconscious in his bed. According to the babysitter, Merry, he has been like this since yesterday afternoon. From the outside, there are no obvious scars, and it doesn't look like it's sick. There was no fever, so the doctor couldn't do anything. And on his arm, some strange graphic symbols appeared, like some unintelligible text. Therefore, Christopher felt that his son was most likely cursed by someone.
"Who would do such a thing to Ling Lang?" Elena asked.
"Well, if you want to talk about this, there may be too much." Christopher said helplessly, "I have been a police officer for so many years, and I have arrested a lot of criminals. It is inevitable that there will be a few of them who hold grudges, and it is normal. But what should be at my disposal, why should innocent Daniel?"
Christopher looked very distressed.
"It's too early to tell." Bella comforted him, "It just so happens that I know a little bit about spells and the like. Why don't we go over and see how we can help?"
"Really?" Christopher seemed to see a savior and said excitedly, "That's great!"
"But if it's a curse, I won't be able to unravel it." Bella said cautiously.
However, it is also possible that, like the previous dress, it was a human factor and then disguised as a curse.
After all, it's not easy to make a curse work.
"It's okay, it's better than a layman like me." Christopher said, "Without further ado, let's go now."
With that, he hired a carriage and left the bookstore with Bella and Elena.
