Chapter Twenty-Six: The Mountain People

In the mountains, men are generally relatively thin, and there are few fat people with fat bodies, and strong men with five big and three thick. My father, for example, was usually a head taller than the men in the mountains, and when I became an adult, I was as tall as my father, and my neighborhood friends, including my cousins, were far behind.

There is a magical place in Dongling, where my aunt's house is located, the women born here are very smart, with delicate facial features and delicate appearances, such as my aunt's four daughters, that's it, one is more beautiful than the other.

I remember that my aunt's neighbor has a little girl, about a few years younger than me, and she looks handsome, when she was in junior high school, she was a guest at her aunt's house, and she fiddled with some junior high school knowledge in front of this little girl.

Dongling has beautiful women and a good reputation, and many cadres and children in the county town can't find a suitable partner, so people often introduce Dongling women to marry. I have seen many such women, and indeed all of them are well-proportioned and dignified.

There are beautiful women but not beautiful men, compared with other places, they are especially short and thin, and their facial features are not neat, and they can even be said to be slightly ugly. It's really a party of water and soil to support a person, and it's strange that it has been impossible to explain.

My eldest uncle, for example, was relatively short and thin, and a son he had finally given birth to in evasion from family planning did not look much better. Perhaps it is precisely because of the influence of his appearance that his four sisters are better married than the other, and their lives are more prosperous than the other, and he has never had a decent job, and he is still wandering around.

The aunt and the uncle, the aunt and the uncle, are actually close relatives, the aunt's mother and grandfather are sisters, my name is "aunt", my uncle's mother and grandmother are sisters, my name is "aunt and grandma".

Before liberation, the "aunt" family was an oil mill, and the "aunt and aunt" were said to be the young grandmothers of the landlord's family. They live deep in the mountains, and there are plenty of fields outside them.

Living in the mountains does not mean that it is necessarily the ancestral mountain, it is also possible to escape the disaster of war and hide in the mountains, especially during the War of Resistance against Japan, the world is more chaotic, and the mountains are particularly not peaceful, only the mountains are simple and peaceful.

People who take refuge in the deep mountains generally have a solid family background, buy land outside, build bridges and roads to do good deeds in the places where they live, and many of the stone bridge roads deep in the mountains and the "pavilions" that cover the mountains and forests are built in this situation.

The Chinese have always advocated doing good deeds and accumulating virtues, among which building roads and bridges is considered the greatest merit, and it has been continued through the ages.

The house in the deep mountains, it can show that the people in the mountains are not simple, many houses are stacked with blue bricks horizontally, and the stone lion house in front of the door is hooked, the same is a lot, solid and beautiful, tall and magnificent.

In this way, it shows that the owner is not ordinary, because in most cases, the blue brick house is always built with a wall, which is still solid, and can save a lot of money, and the house built in this way can be seen more.

The Japanese army once invaded Fengxin, and they were not seen in the mountains, but the villages near the foot of the mountains were not less harmful, and some large villages more than ten miles away from the mountains had many Japanese devils, and they often heard people talk about the Japanese army burning, killing, and looting.

Some of the blue brick mansions that have been counted in and out were burned to ashes by a fire of the Japanese army, and there is a Wangjia village under the bath, and it is said that there is an old house that is particularly large, and the fire has been burning for three days and three nights before it is extinguished, and an old house is completely burned down.

This story was told by my classmates in Wangjia Village when I was studying in Yuxia Middle School, but I can't remember exactly who told it, but I remember that it was a boy, and when he told this, he boasted a little bit about the endless scenery of a place, and with some resentment unique to teenagers, which was ruined by the invaders.

Dongling, where the aunt's house is located, and Shangwangping, where the aunt's house is located, are all real mountain people, there are houses made of loess rammed in memory, and there are also many houses made of blue bricks, some of which are built with special style, special exquisiteness, and are simple with vicissitudes.

It can be seen that the life of the people in the mountains is still relatively rich, and the resources in the mountains are indeed rich, with omnipotent bamboo, all kinds of wood, all kinds of wild fruits, and huge stones that can be seen everywhere and are equally widely used.

There is also a large amount of farmland in the mountains, which is cultivated along the mountains and rises layer by layer, which is called terraced fields. Some are elongated, while others may only have a small piece, which the mountain people jokingly call "the big field of hats". However, there are many of them, and together they build the life of the people in the mountains.

Due to the reason of sunshine, the terraced fields are generally on the sunny slope, it is a beautiful scenery in the mountain, layer upon layer, can cover the whole hillside, winding several mountain beams, the grass seedlings become green in spring, and the rice waves roll in autumn.

Wild boars are the most abundant in the mountains, and they have the strongest destructive power to crops. At the place of the stream, you can see the bamboo tube driven by the water flow from time to time, and the regular sound of "bangbang" is to drive away wild boars.

The terraced fields are beautiful, but the work is quite hard, the fields are paths, narrow and steep, shoulder to shoulder the age of hand carrying, every seedling, every grain of rice, is along the curved and steep fields, step by step to pick up to the field, and step by step to pick back home.

When he was eleven or twelve years old and was able to go to the field to plant rice and cut rice, he would often go to his aunt's or aunt's house to help, and this kind of hard work was deeply memorable. Some of the terraced fields are still very far away, and you have to bend a few mountain beams, and you will set off at dawn, bring dry food, and have lunch in the fields.

The buffalo is strong, large, and slightly bulky, and the mountain roads are difficult to walk, so they are not suitable for terraced farming. Cattle are relatively small in strength and small in size, but they are relatively light and flexible, which is more suitable for mountain work.

Therefore, people in the mountains generally raise cattle, which can not only be used for rice farming, but also can go deep into the mountains through the old forest to haul bamboo or timber.

Buffalo are particularly fond of water, and in the countryside of plains or hilly areas, in the summer, there are always a few buffaloes crowded in the pond, soaking in the water, snorting and spewing out pieces of water mist.

Cattle don't like water, but dries. The sturdy cattle have golden hair all over their bodies and look particularly showy. Buffalo have black hair, usually very sparse, and have bare, gray, hard skin, often stained with mud and sometimes cow dung in the pen.

There are no lakes and rivers in the mountains, and the mountain people are generally "landlubbers", and few people can swim. Flat principles are more common to see swimmers, for example, my father is a master swimmer. Buffalo and cattle also have this characteristic, one will not sink if it is immersed in water, and the other will flee when it encounters water.

When he was a child, he saw a big flood that trapped "Uncle Bison" on the opposite bank, and his father led a cow to wade through the rushing flood, and let him ride the ox across the river, relieving him of the danger of that time.

There are some differences between the Dongling of the aunt's house and the Shangwangping of the aunt's house. The east ridge is wider, stretching several mountain beams connected together, and you can see the head but you can't see the edge. Shangwangping's is more slender, divided into several valleys, and stretches up according to the valley, and you can see the edge but you can't see the end.

The terraced rice fields in Shangwangping start from the road at the bottom of the valley, and pass through three villages along the valley before reaching Shangwangping, and the terraces follow all the way without interruption.

A gravel road, is the only main road leading to the county seat, starting from the bath, nearly 20 kilometers all the way to the steep slope, when I was a child, I often rode a bicycle along this road to my aunt's house, extremely laborious, leaving the road, the mountain road is even steeper, many places are too steep, completely unable to ride, can only push the bicycle up.

There is a village next to the highway, the name is "Gaojian", its name is related to an elevated canal on the village, this canal was built since the 50s to the early 60s, when the socialist construction was in full swing, and the construction of water conservancy in the style of "Yugong moving mountains" has become a feat of the times that has attracted worldwide attention.

At that time, the whole country was building water conservancy, and the famous "Red Flag Canal" on Dabie Mountain was built in that era. In the same era, Fengxin County also built a lot of water conservancy, from small streams to large rivers.

The embankment in the creek south of my house was built during this period. The river that originates in the mountains and flows for more than 20 kilometers is also built in this period, and the top of the Guanxia Dam is called "Dam Head" by the locals.

With the dam to build, there is also a power station, a four-level dam, divided into a four-level power station, the "dam head" is the most grand, the reservoir capacity is the largest, the power station is also the largest, the other according to the level is called the second, third, four-level power station, it is not easy to build, it is called "Lao Yugong power station".

Similar to the fourth-level dam and fourth-level power station under the view, in the Yangshan of another mountain system, such dams and power stations have also been built, the scale is smaller than that of the view, and the number is only three, and the top one is also called the "old Yugong power station".

These dams and power stations are still stable and functioning. At that time, the role was even greater, which not only effectively solved the problem of farmland irrigation, but also directly contributed to the electrification of the whole county, which was not easy to achieve at that time.

At that time, there was a lack of modern operating equipment, and the construction of the dam relied entirely on manpower, shoulder-to-shoulder, and personnel were transferred from all over the county to bring their own daily necessities and labor tools. The slogan of "Yugong moves mountains" is plastered all over the corner.

My parents participated in the construction of the Guanxia dam, which took several years to complete with the labor of the whole county, which shows how difficult it is. The tall dam body on the front of the "dam head" depicts the four bright red characters of "Yugong Moves the Mountain" with red paint.

Climb to the top of the mountain, stand on the flat "coffin stone", face the mountain wind, in the distant deep valley, you can see these four big characters very clearly, tenaciously telling a period of greatness and hardship.

The dam was completed, and at the same time, a diversion canal was built, which meandered along the mountain, all the way down, through the second and third levels, and ended at the fourth level. Traveling through the mountains, digging according to the mountains, and being blocked by fields and rivers, the canals are built and crossed.

The canal should be made of concrete, and it is not known whether there is a steel structure inside, including the pillars that support the canal, and the material used is the same. After so many years, I have never heard of a leak and collapse, and it is still intact, which shows how strong it is.

The four-level power station is not far from Yuxia Middle School, I have been to it when I was studying in school, and the whole power station, from the bottom to the top of the diversion canal, has 400 steps, which is regarded as some kind of glory by the power station people, as long as someone comes, they will make a detailed explanation.

The water of the diversion canal, from the top of the impact down, drives the machinery to do work, converts the potential energy into kinetic energy, and then converts it into electrical energy, the machine roars, the water potential roars, deafening, can give people a deep shock in the soul.

The canal passes underneath, you can't feel how big it is, when you really see it, you know how big the water is, the water flow is silent, it looks gentle, but you can't see through the bottom, you don't know how deep it is, the common water flow flips, which is formed by too much water pressure.

I have never seen anyone swim inside, and no one dares to swim inside, the entrance of the monitoring power station is particularly open, forming a deep pool, flowing slowly without splashing, but giving people a deep sense of fear, I heard that people often accidentally fall into and drown.

Similar to the water canal on the top of the "high stream" village, there are several places, which are raised high and called the stream, which is appropriate. Standing under it, I can only sigh at my own insignificance, sigh at the greatness of my predecessors, such a project, put in the present, it is not easy, perhaps not only not easy, but also can not be replicated.
