Professor Xu Guangxian aimed at the separation of praseodymium and neodymium in rare earths.

At that time, as strong as the industry benchmark, the Rhodia plant in France also used ion separation method for the separation of these two elements, with a small output and high cost.

Xu Guangxian, on the other hand, took a different approach and used the "cascade extraction method" for separation and purification.

After the idea was determined, after two years of hard work, the team finally succeeded in separating praseodymium and neodymium in the laboratory. From the perspective of quantitative indicators, the separation coefficient of the industry benchmark at that time was 1.4, Xu Guangxian reached 4, and at the same time reached a world record of 99.99% in purity.

Since 1978, Xu Guangxian has held a "cascade extraction" workshop to accelerate the implementation of domestic rare earth separation technology, but due to the asset-heavy nature of the rare earth industry, the decision-making cost of the producers is extremely high, resulting in Xu Guangxian's first bite of crab has never been tasted.
