Chapter Twenty-Four: What Happened to Kulich
The cool breeze in the fog blew the flag of the Duolun Chamber of Commerce on the COCO, making a loud noise.
In order to overtake the Spanish sailing ship, Kulici deviated part of the course to prevent it from colliding with other ships.
The visibility around the ship does not exceed 50 meters, which is very dangerous during navigation, and if a ship is oncoming, it is not even time to turn the rudder at a distance of 50 meters.
With his superb sailing skills, he puffed up his sails and sailed with his compass and memory in the gray mist, and a satisfied smile appeared on his face.
"I can finally overtake that damn Spanish sailing ship, and I won't lose too much. β
But the good times were short-lived, and gradually some sailors began to see the light of fire coming from ahead.
"Captain, there is a situation ahead, about seventy meters!"
But their speed was so fast that a crash was almost inevitable.
"Kling!" Kulich shouted.
The first mate on deck reacted almost instantly.
"Put the emergency steering anchor, left front side!"
He shouted loudly as he ran towards the bow of the boat.
The two sailors also rushed forward to help and loosen the fixed turntable.
The turntable began to fall wildly under the help of the anchor chains.
They drove along the outer edge of the South American continent, where the continental shelf should be relatively shallow, and if the anchor could catch the rocks on the bottom of the sea, then everything would still have a chance.
Kulich had already begun to turn the rudder to the left, but the ship was not a car after all, and continued to move quickly towards the location of the fire by inertia on the surface of the sea.
"Please, please!"
He muttered silently as he prayed for the emergency turning anchor to work.
Then there was a loud bang, like an impact, and the turning anchor hooked the stone and pulled the ship forward.
In the violent turbulence, the two sailors were thrown directly into the sea, and the deck and side of the anchor in front were crushed by the iron chains, but the speed of the ship slowed down, and the course had shifted from its original position.
The bump made Kulic unsteady on his feet, and he fell straight out and hit the side of the boat, a wound on his forehead, and blood flowed down his face.
But he didn't care in the slightest, just a sense of relief, and finally avoided the fate of bumping into him.
"Someone fell overboard!"
The impact caused the two sailors to fall into the sea, and the remaining sailors quickly lowered their lifeboats and began to search the surrounding sea.
Kling rushed over and picked him up.
"Captain, go and bandage it. β
Kurich, who stood up, shook his head, just wiped the blood from his forehead, and continued to direct the sailors.
"Raise the sails! Lower the main anchor, stop the ship, stop the ship first!"
The scene was a bit chaotic, with the stubble stabbing two sailors as the deck shattered by the pull of the anchor, and some were also injured by the jolting, and some sailors in the cabin were injured by falling items.
Some people were busy treating their companions, some were preparing to rescue people who had fallen into the water, but the boat did not stop.
The sailors obeyed the captain's orders, and with the exception of a few who went to rescue the drowning man, everyone else stopped the ship before dealing with their injuries.
This accident caused Kulic to blame himself a little, because he insisted on going his own way and kept driving at high speed in the fog, which caused the sailors to be injured and the Coco to be damaged, but fortunately no more serious accidents occurred.
After stopping here for about ten minutes, he got on board the overboard, and then lowered half the sail again, and headed for the firelight, where he wanted to see what was there.
The flames burned the wreckage of the ship, even in the extremely humid gray fog, and the gunpowder and oil loaded on the ship financed the flames, and the main body of the ship had been dragged into the water, leaving only the stern part floating on the surface of the sea, burning with raging flames.
A corpse floated on the surface of the sea, which was fished up by sailors.
The ship's doctor shook his head, there was no longer a signal of life, and the most exaggerated was the wound in the chest from the neck to the abdomen, which was definitely not caused by accident, but was cut by a scimitar.
The sailors on board all stared at the wreckage of the ship, and the Spanish flag on it indicated that this was the sailing ship they wanted to surpass, compared to the Coco's incomparably large fourth-class galleon, the Spanish merchant ship with a total length of sixty meters and a hull two stories higher than them, was destroyed in this way.
There began to be a moment of silence among sailors, and for those who died unexpectedly at sea, wishing their souls to cross the river of souls safely and reach the other side of happiness, they also mourned for themselves, and no one could be sure that they would have such a day.
The battle must have been fierce, the Spanish merchant ship had forty-five cannons on it, but it was still broken into three knots, and the bow and deck sank first, only the stern remained.
And they also experienced a terrible broadside battle, but they were defeated, and the pirates plundered everything of value, but continued to bombard the merchant ship with artillery before finally leaving, until it sank into the deep sea with all its sailors.
The Coco continued to move, but its speed had slowed down, and all the sailors remained quiet in the fog for fear of provoking the unknown and murderous pirate.
Everyone keeps their eyes open, wanting to find possible enemies in the fog and then warn in advance.
In this way, everyone was trapped in the fog for three days, completely unable to get out, disoriented, without a star map, and therefore unable to use the sextant positioning, relying only on the compass to prove that they were indeed moving in one direction.
Finally, in the early morning of the fourth day, they finally came out of the fog and cheered, except for KuliΔ staring at the fog behind him, a large black ship emerging from the edge of the fog, with tattered black sails and a terrifying skull flag on it.
He saw it so clearly, but in the blink of an eye, the black pirate ship and the gray mist disappeared as if it had never appeared.
They spent a week in the port of Cayenne, mending the ships and giving the wounded sailors a good rest, but during this week, no merchant ships arrived in the harbor, and almost everyone felt the difference.
They were the only ships that came out of the fog alive.
On their second arrival in Cayenne, the Donner also gave them a celebration to celebrate their survival, because according to the exchange, more than forty merchant ships had disappeared into the fog.
Later, the fog appeared throughout the Caribbean, the Gulf of Guinea, the Mediterranean, and northern Europe, taking with it a large number of ships as sacrifices.
