Chapter 437: Life is in Danger!

From January to May 1850, Congress debated whether or not to introduce slavery on the New Lands, one of the most famous debates in American history.

Some of the members of the parliament were armed with their arms with them at the meeting, and they sometimes fought at the meeting, and the intensity of the struggle was evident.

The South is planning to hold a Southern convention in June, and several southern states are on the verge of seceding from the Union.

At this critical juncture, Zachary Taylor did not compromise on both sides, but made his position firm.

In one of his speeches, he made it clear that he would keep his promise in the general election, maintain political independence, and not be a one-party nominal president.

Although he was a southerner and owned many slaves, he advocated the preservation of federal unity in the interests of the whole country.

Zachary Taylor proposed that slavery could be maintained throughout the country, but that it was forbidden to extend slavery to new areas.

He recommended that California and other places be admitted to the Union as free states as soon as possible, and vowed to use force to maintain Union unity "with his own army" if necessary.

Zachary Taylor's attitude was resolute, but at that time the southern slave-owning forces had already united, and if the federal government had resorted to strong force, there was a high probability that the American Civil War would break out immediately.

At a particularly serious time in the midst of a national crisis, on July 4, 1850, Zachary Taylor attended an Independence Day celebration in Washington, D.C.

The commemorative event was held outdoors, and he listened to various patriotic speeches for more than two hours under the scorching sun and did not leave the venue in advance.

Back in the White House, Zachary Taylor felt thirsty and hungry.

"It's damn weather! There are no clouds at all! ”

Zachary Taylor complained in his mouth, and took off his blazer and vest directly, ripped off the bow tie on his collar, and instantly returned to the image of the disheveled old general from the well-dressed president, the difference is that the clothes are cleaner, not as sloppy as before when he was in the army.

As soon as he sat down on the couch, Zachary Taylor felt thirsty, and at the same time his stomach was already hungry.

"Hurry up and get me something to eat! And water! ”

Mr. Taylor's request was quickly conveyed.

The waiters at the White House brought him a jug full of iced milk and a large plate of bright red cherries.

This made the hungry and thirsty Zachary Taylor's eyes light up, and he glanced at the young waiter with approval.

It's rare for him to be so eye-catching!

Standing in the sun for so long in a full suit, Zachary Taylor was already too hot, although he took off his coat and vest at this time, the shirt inside was already wet with sweat and clinging to his body, making him uncomfortable, but at this time he couldn't care about these anymore, seeing the waiter put the tray on the table, and poured him a full glass of milky white iced milk with a gorgeous silver kettle, Zachary Taylor couldn't wait to reach out and pick up the glass, raise his head and drink it.

The cold milk went down to his stomach, and Zachary Taylor only felt that it was cold all the way from his mouth to his stomach, although the surface of his body was still hot, but his body was much more comfortable.

However, Zachary Taylor was not satisfied, seeing that the waiter was holding the silver kettle and was going to continue pouring milk for him, Zachary Taylor couldn't wait, and directly reached out and took the silver kettle from the waiter's hand, and did not use the cup again, so he poured the spout into his mouth.

Zachary Taylor felt the cold milk sliding through his mouth and esophagus all the way into his stomach, and the whole person felt indescribably happy, and the heat of his body was greatly reduced by this coldness.

Zachary Taylor, who was drinking cold milk, did not notice the mockery and coldness that flashed in the eyes of the young waiter standing respectfully beside him.

Putting down the empty silver jug, Zachary Taylor breathed a long sigh of satisfaction, finally not as hot and thirsty as he had been, but as he put down the milk jug, his eyes fell on the large plate of bright red cherries on the tray.

Although this pot of cold milk made him less thirsty and relieved the heat on his body, his stomach was already hungry, at this time, seeing this large plate of bright cherries, Zachary Taylor's stomach couldn't help but growl, and the feeling of hunger became more intense.

Not only was the cherry red and attractive in appearance, but it was also sweet and juicy to eat, and Zachary Taylor quickly ate the large plate of cherries, and then put down the plate contentedly, leaning back on the back of the sofa and panting comfortably.

Comfortable!

Zachary Taylor was indeed comfortable at this moment, but soon he was not comfortable.

Later that day, his stomach began to rumble, followed by a sharp pain in his abdomen.

The president's health care physician in the White House, Alexander A. S. Wortherspoon soon arrived to examine him, and finally diagnosed him with cholera, and gave him calomel and opium.

The next day, President Zachary Taylor was not only in a much better condition, but also able to handle some important matters.

However, the president's doctors quickly realized the seriousness of the problem, as they were unable to explain and stop the president's rising temperature.

On July 8, doctors reported that the president had a high fever and was in serious condition.

Although Zachary Taylor had already estimated that he would not recover, he survived the night with the perseverance characteristic of a soldier.

On July 9, Zachary Taylor felt the deterioration of his body and realized that his life was in danger and that he probably wouldn't survive the evening any longer.

Lying on the hospital bed, Zachary Taylor's face was pale with a strange flush, and he used the last strength of his body to say his last words that night.

"I'm about to die, and I'm waiting for God to call me as soon as possible. I have faithfully tried to do my best to perform all my duties, and I have a clear conscience about it, and my only regret is that I will have to leave my friends".

After saying this, Zachary Taylor's mind couldn't help but think of the faces of Victor and James, these two stinky boys said when they left that they had a fate, it seems that there is no such fate in this life, so see you in the next life!

In a cacophony of screams, Zachary Taylor's vision gradually darkened, his thoughts blurred, and he finally lost consciousness completely.
