Chapter 423: Louis XVI – The King's Voice
After the coronation, Louis XVI was besieged by people, some of them in good faith and others out of bad faith. The old aristocracy in exile was at first shocked when they saw Louis XVI, and then they surrounded him as if they had found their backbone.
Others were third-estate legislators who had voted in favor of execution in the National Convention vote without conscience or in the rhythm, and had been uneasy for all these years. In fact, now that I think about it, compared to the cruel and bloodthirsty Robespierre, Louis XVI was really not a bad ruler, he was at fault for his incompetence, but not in terms of character and morality.
When the madness of the Revolution ended, or rather, since Danton was beheaded and the citizens of Paris were awakened with his own blood, people began to wonder whether the many madness of the Revolution were justified, and their consciences began to be disturbed, and they were mentally tortured day and night. Maybe you don't understand?
But another simple example, you can understand that after World War II, many veterans who had participated in the war of aggression wrote confessions and even came to apologize. (You may disdain the apologies of these murderers, but at least, at least they are better than those who have done bad things and have no repentance and peace of mind, aren't they?) At least they are willing to admit the truth, rather than trying to cover it up and deny it! )
As it is, as time goes by, as they grow older and more experienced, many people will regret and feel guilty about their stupid actions when they were younger. This is both the so-called - sensible! As mentioned above, there is no essential difference between the army and the mob, and a group of angry and impulsive people can easily be used by people with intentions to eventually do wrong things that they will eventually regret, which is the effect of [herd mentality]!
So, when the former mob calmed down, especially after witnessing the White Terror of the revolutionary leaders in the Convention, when they also played the role of victims, after the "age of Robespierre of madness" and the threat of the guillotine, they finally understood the fear of being victims.
As a result, they began to share with the royal family, with the nobility, and with the poor people who were persecuted and had to leave their homes and live in exile, which is the fundamental reason why the French Revolution once again returned to the rule of the Bourbons after going in a big circle.
People have a myriad of questions: "Why are you still alive?" "Where have you been?" "Why did you come back?" "Do you still want to restore?" "What do you think of Louis XVIII, who sought restoration with the support of the British?" "Why did you appear at the coronation and be in charge of dedicating the crown to Napoleon I? Is there a deep meaning behind this? "Have you been coerced?" Is it voluntary? Of course, there are also doubts about the authenticity (xìng) of Louis XVI (shēn).
Faced with this nonsense, Louis XVI was completely overwhelmed and had no choice but to make a speech in which he declared his position:
"First of all, I want to forgive you for all the things you have done to hurt me! Because I know that those things (qíng) are not what you really want, it is a chaotic time, and everyone (shēn) is not helping! You are starving, all of France is wailing, and I must admit that I am a failed leader, powerless to lead you out of the abyss of misery! Therefore, I do not blame you, I know that from the bottom of my heart, you are kind, upright, brave sons and daughters of France, and you are all my family! In this bloody storm of qíng, we are all victims! Louis XVI opened his arms and motioned for silence, then spoke in a deep (qíng) tone.
Hearing his words, the crowd fell silent, and there was a faint sound of sobbing, many people lost their relatives and friends in this bloody storm, and before they knew it, this righteous revolution had become a cruel and indiscriminate killing. Countless happy families were broken before the guillotine, countless wives lost their husbands (such as Josephine's husband, Viscount Beauarne, who was a pioneer of reform but still lost his head), countless children lost their fathers, and the Revolution gave birth to a large number of orphans and widows. How could they not burst into tears when they heard Louis XVI's words?
"I'm sure you all know me, perhaps, I don't all know you, but I know that you all have a common name - the French! I'm the same, I'm part of France! I believe that all of you here are as deeply (ài) as I am about our beautiful motherland, our common beautiful homeland - France! I am glad that this catastrophe is finally over, and it is our Emperor Napoleon I who has put an end to it! In the midst of his words, Napoleon appeared silently, receiving the cheers and greetings of the people.
"I know that your main concern is what I think of the French Empire and His Majesty Napoleon I!" Louis XVI gentlemanly waited for the crowd to calm down before continuing.
"I will answer you, then, that is, I was King of France, Louis XVI of the House of Capet, but I am first and foremost a Frenchman, a (ài) countryman. There is no difference between us, whether it is the aristocracy, the clergy, or the third estate, we are all French! We have shed too much blood and wounded too much in the Revolution, just like our French mothers! We have had enough of infighting, enough of senseless bloodshed. I must admit that when I succeeded to the throne, the finances of the Kingdom of France were in shambles, and when I left, I was left with a mess of debts and holes! ”
"But today, what we see is a France that is once again strong, a France that has never been stronger, a France that has never been stronger, and who has defeated the great powers that tried to extinguish the flame of revolution again and again, and instead of being defeated, we have been reborn and spread our wings in the critical moments of life and death. Needless to say, Louis XVI was already answering the question for him: "Napoleon I!" "Napoleon!" "Your Majesty the Emperor!"
"It's Napoleon, that's right, it's Napoleon! It was he who led us out of the predicament and put an end to the chaos, and it was he who led the army to defeat the invading enemy again and again, and defended our dignity and freedom. Today, he wore an unprecedented imperial crown in full view of everyone, and today, it is a day worth remembering, and it is on this day that the French people are united, united under the leadership of Napoleon, united under the tricolor. As long as you are French, as long as you are still (ài) French motherland, you will (ài) wear Napoleon, (ài) wear the French Empire, this is the happy land of all French people, tolerance, equality, freedom, so, come back! The French Empire will welcome and embrace every upright and brave French son! ”
"We have paid so many sacrifices and shed so much blood in the Great Revolution in exchange for such valuable experience. Therefore, I will never choose restoration, nor will I oppose any kind of restoration, the era of belonging to the Bourbons is a thing of the past. Now, it's time to open a new next page and a new chapter for all French people! Louis XVI's speech ended with a short, forceful, and well-organized speech, which was approved by the crowd, and for the first and perhaps last time since the Revolution, Louis XVI's speech did not receive a single outcry.
Napoleon publicly accepted Louis XVI's allegiance and recognized him as king of France. Of course, it's just a fictitious title, as we all know, the emperor is bigger than the king, isn't it? France would still be led by Napoleon, and the advantage of this was that it would shut down the crowd, and while Louis XVI was still alive (qíng), the continental powers could no longer attack France in the name of restoring the monarchy, and Louis XVIII became unjustified and disobedient, so he had to obediently stand aside.
——————————————————————————————————————————
In the afternoon, after the grand coronation was completely over, Han Xing once again went to Napoleon's office, where His Majesty the Emperor had changed into comfortable clothes (shēn) and was dealing with a backlog of official documents.
"Everything seems to have gone back to the past~" Han Xing sat comfortably on the chair, took a sip of the (rè) tea in front of him, and then said with a smile.
"Yes~ Everything seems to go back to the past!" Napoleon knew what Han Xing meant, and the question between them had already been explained that day. Especially this afternoon, news came from England that George III, who should have lived until 1820, had died of illness.
Obviously, George IV did not like to be nicknamed the "Whale Prince" all the time, and he had no intention of being the "Prince of Sixty Years" if he had the opportunity (qíng). And the death of George III is obviously inseparable from him!
"The only difference is that I have an extra crown of laurel leaves made of gold, and a whole table of piles of official documents~ Damn, I always feel that this deal is not worth it~" Napoleon looked at the mountains of official documents on the table, sighed, and rubbed his eyes tiredly.
"Thank goodness, I don't have to deal with this mess anymore~" Louis XVI said with a gloating and unscrupulous smile.
"I said, aren't you going to find someone to sort these things for you? Is it necessary to take so many things (qíng) on oneself (shēn)? Han Xing looked at the dozen daunting official documents and shuddered.
"It's not~ You are the ideal candidate in my mind~ My right-hand man, I have been keeping this position for you~" Napoleon played with the dozen official documents in his hand like playing cards, and looked at Han Xing (yīn) with a sympathetic smile.
"Don't~ I'm afraid I'll die of overwork! You better look for Louie, he is an experienced professional, and he still takes your salary, isn't it his duty to serve the country? Han Xing hurriedly waved his hand, and then threw the pot to Louis XVI.
"What kind of professional am I? You don't look at what I've done to govern France! Let me govern France, and you will wait to be drowned in spittle and saliva~" Louis XVI laughed at himself.
"By the way, Hanschel, didn't you say you came to this world to dominate the Caribbean?" Napoleon casually flipped through these official documents sent from various places. Don't look at the number of them, but many of them are just cookie-cutter reports, and just a glance at them is over!!
"Yes, but not only that, Napoleon, let me ask you, which of the European countries do you think is the greatest threat to you?" Napoleon looked at each other, and Han Xing remembered his serious matter, so he cleared his throat and spoke.
"Of course it's the British~" Napoleon said without thinking.
