The president, who served as the president of the Max Planck Society, was the director of the Max Planck Institute's famous steel research institute and an expert in the field of surface chemistry.

In his research field, the Kelvin scanning probe invented by him has been widely used to study hidden interfaces in corrosion science, revealing the stability mechanism of metal-polymer interfaces, and has achieved outstanding research results in the electrochemical properties of ultra-thin electrolytes covering metal surfaces.
