Chapter 6: Limbo
In the eyes of the vast majority of Lepeilian people on the continent, except for the two continents of the east and west, there are only infinite oceans left in the world. This is the shape of the world as it is now commonly known to the Lepelians, who have certainly not yet discovered the existence of that small island in the South China Sea.
The sea area east of the West Continent and west of the East Continent is often referred to as the West Sea. Because in ancient times, before the discovery of the Western Continent,
People regard the Eastern Continent as the center of the world, and the surrounding waters are also named after the location of the Eastern Continent. For the Lepelians, who have now mastered a certain degree of seafaring skills, the distance between the two continents across the West Sea is no longer as unattainable as it used to be. But the East China Sea is different, and the ocean east of the East Continent is vast and boundless, and it seems that there will never be an end. Moreover, the ocean west of the Western Continent has not been explored so far, and it is a completely unknown sea area, and it does not even have a name.
Since ancient times, the eastern continent has been ruled by the Lepelian aristocracy of the central region, while the western continent is ruled by a people known as the "Savoys".
In fact, the Savoy people originated in the northern part of the Eastern Continent, but more than a thousand years ago, this people parted ways with the Lepelian people in the central part of the Eastern Continent. They sailed to the Western Continent, established their own kingdom, and vowed never to be with the Lepeilian people in the Eastern Continent again. Despite this, they are still the natives of this world, a race that has also diverged from the ancestors of the ancient Lepelian people.
Since more than 1,000 years ago, the Eastern Continent and the Western Continent have been in a state of opposition, which shows that the contradictions between them have been in conflict for a long time.
However, regardless of the relationship between the Sava people in the Western Continent and the Lepeilian people in the East Continent, for the other race that was displaced here for some reason, the Streamers, the essence of the Lepelian and the Sava people is the same, they are both indigenous groups originating from the Eastern Continent, and they belong to the same species form, so they are collectively called "Lepeilian people". In the world of Lepeilian, only the Streamers are truly aliens, they do not belong here, and they have a very different biological nature from the original race. That is, the streamer and the Lepeilian are two different species.
The overall area of the Western Continent ruled by the Savoy is much larger than that of the Eastern Continent ruled by the Lepelians, about one-third more land. However, the landform of the Western Continent is not as flat and fertile as the Eastern Continent, and the population is less than one percent of that of the Eastern Continent. Moreover, the northwest and northeast regions are mostly covered by deserts and mountains, so the land use rate is not high. In the western continent, where the land is vast and the population is small, the major cities are distributed along the southeast coast, and are concentrated in the relatively flat and livable zone.
The southeast coastal area has uniform distribution of water and soil, mild climate, and relatively fertile soil, which is more suitable for survival, but because the Sava people are not good at farming, the agriculture in the western continent is far less developed than that in the eastern continent.
Although the rulers of the Western Continent, the Savoy people, did not like to eat fish, the Western Continent has one of the largest fishing ports in the world, located in the southernmost coastal city of the Western Continent - Limbo City.
In fact, Linbo City was only an inconspicuous small fishing village in the early days, and after nearly a hundred years, it gradually developed into the only commercial port in the western continent. Although it is still customary to call it a fishing port, it is now much more useful and larger than its name.
Since the rulers of the Western Continent, the Savie, did not like to eat fish, what was the reason for the existence of this fishing port? This has to start with the history of the Eastern Continent.
As early as more than 1,000 years ago, there were many ethnic groups with different cultures in the Eastern Continent, but in the last thousand years, only three ethnic groups have left a strong pen and ink in the annals of history. The first is an agrarian people ruled by the Lepeilian aristocracy in the central region, commonly known as the "Lepelian people", who have a large number of troops and slaves; the second is the nomadic hunter-gatherer people living in the northern region, the "Savoy people", this ethnic group has a small population, but they are tall and strong, brave and good at war, in fact, it is more appropriate to call them a fighting people, and the last is the "Feidi people", a seafaring people who once lived in the southern coastal areas The Fiji people were the first seafaring people in the history of the Eastern Continent, but the population was very sparse, and as early as more than a thousand years ago, they had been expelled from the Eastern Continent by the Lepeilian nobles in the central region.
However, before the Savoy and Fiji people left the Eastern Continent one after another, there was also a period of peaceful exchanges between the three indigenous groups, which also left a large number of "Lepelian half-bloods".
The so-called "half-bloods" mainly refer to the mixed descendants of the Lepelian and Savoy people in the central region of the Eastern Continent, or the mixed descendants of the Lepelian and Fidian peoples. At that time, due to factors such as geographical distance and population size, there was little overlap between the Savoy people in the north and the Fiji people in the south. As a result, mixed descendants of the Savoyard and Fidian are very rare and are still very few today.
The Lepeilian people in the central region of the Eastern Continent have a very strong concept of hierarchy and inferiority, especially paying attention to blood origin. Since more than 1,000 years ago, the Savoyard and Fidian people broke with the Lepelian people and left the Eastern Continent one after another, the situation of the half-blood descendants who remained in the Eastern Continent has become very embarrassing, and the living conditions have become increasingly difficult.
In the Lepelian world, land is regarded as the most precious treasure, and this is easily understood from the name of the indigenous people. They call themselves "Lepelian people", which means "owner of the land by the water" in Lepelian, and "Lepelian world" is naturally "the world of the owner of the land". This shows how important land is in people's minds.
In the Eastern Continent, people are divided into three classes. The superior class was the owner, ruler and rentier of the land, the Lepelian aristocracy, the inferior class was the cultivator and taxpayer who received the right to use the land, the commoners, and the inferior class was the slave who served the nobility. And those who are inferior to even inferior, who have not been ranked into the ranks, are half-bloods.
In order to consolidate their rule, the nobles would not allow the half-bloods who had tarnished their pure blood to own the slightest land, especially after the Sava and Fiydons had left the Eastern Continent. Because, for the Lepeilian people in the central region of the Eastern Continent, half-bloods are equivalent to traitors and sinners, and they cannot be punished excessively by any means, and their status is very low, even inferior to slaves. The aristocracy usually did not provide labor opportunities for the half-bloods, leaving them to fend for themselves.
Slaves were the property of their masters, who worked for them, and their masters provided them with food and lodging, but there was no freedom at all. Half-bloods, though free, did not have the right to use the land, and lived without a permanent residence, relying only on fishing, hunting, and gathering. Since ancient times, despite the hard work of commoners and slaves, who have fed the parasitic classes of the entire country - the nobility and the army, their status and rights have always been very humble. However, these commoners, who always grovel to the powerful, can freely vent their anger and resentment on the more disadvantaged half-bloods. Therefore, in the Eastern Continent, the half-blooded people can only be oppressed and expelled, and they have been living a life of hunger and cold, and they are precarious.
About two hundred years ago, or more precisely, in 1152 of the Lepeilian calendar, some half-bloods ventured to escape from the Eastern Continent in order to survive.
Half-blooded people with no sailing experience set off from the southwest coast of the East Continent on a homemade simple raft and crossed the ocean to the West Continent. They usually set off at the same time with more than a dozen rows of rafts, drifting on the vast sea for more than 200 days, sometimes even more than a year. In the process, they endured incredible ordeals, and after passing the cold trials of disease and storms, sometimes only one row of rafts was left to be lucky enough to be transported by the wind and waves to the shores of the Western Continent.
These surviving half-bloods gradually gathered in the southernmost region of the Western Continent. Here, too, it is impossible for them to own land and not be able to farm. Because, at that time, the Western Continent had already been ruled by the Sava people for more than a thousand years, and all the land belonged to the Sava people, only the rough sea gave the half-blood a glimmer of hope for survival.
But the great luck in the misfortune is that the Sava people, who also pay attention to blood, do not have any concept of hierarchy and inferiority, nor do they discriminate against half-bloods like the Lepelian people in the Eastern Continent, at most they just let them go. Because, in the eyes of the tough Savoyard people, the cowardly half-bloods simply cannot be a worthy opponent to attract too much attention from them. So, half-bloods were lucky enough to get a chance to survive in the Western Continent.
At first, the landless half-bloods were still left to fish, hunt and gather for their food, and thrived tenaciously in the face of hardship. Later, due to the necessity of life, they had to pluck up their courage and exchange some simple handicrafts for clothes and shelter from the wind and rain from the Savoyards. However, since the Savoyards did not like to eat fish and were not good at farming, the half-bloods were limited in exchange. Therefore, they had to take the risk of transporting dried seafood, as well as some wild specialties from the western continent, to the eastern continent in exchange for more grain, and gradually developed the earliest commercial activities in the world. It can be said that the half-bloods are the pioneers of commercial activity in the true sense of the word.
But in the 100 years since the dawn of commerce, there has still been no special currency in the world. People usually bartered or paid taxes in kind for precious items such as gold, jewelry, fabrics, utensils, etc. Gold and precious stones, though not currency in circulation, are particularly valuable because they are rare and shiny, and can be made into beautiful and dazzling ornaments and utensils, which greatly satisfy people's vanity. In trading with the nobles, half-bloods can occasionally obtain a small amount of treasure.
There are two main reasons why money is not produced. First, to date, with the exception of self-sufficient civilians, almost all productive labor in the Eastern Continent has been made up of slaves. The aristocracy usually owned a large number of slaves, who metallurged, tweed, farmed, and tended livestock...... To provide all the necessities of life for the nobles, the nobles basically did not need to rely on trading to obtain survival materials. They think that as long as they own the land, they can have everything. Second, the aristocratic rulers believed that commerce was not a necessary activity to maintain the survival of the state. Although simple bartering between neighbors is not uncommon, it has always been forbidden for citizens to engage in business. In order to consolidate their dominance, the nobles had to keep all the favorable conditions firmly in their own hands, and the land and resources could only be controlled and distributed by them, as was the way of life of the people. Because the aristocracy believed that if a large number of civilians engaged in business, the number of people who cultivated would decrease, leading to a lack of military resources, which was not conducive to national defense. After all, only the presence of a large number of peasants could feed more armies, clergy, and craftsmen, such as those who specialized in crafting weapons and building palaces for the nobles, and so on. Therefore, since the rise of commercial activities, it is still a business that Lepelian people despise.
For all these reasons, these half-blooded people who rely on fishing, hunting, gathering, and business for their livelihood are actually barely able to sustain their basic survival needs, and are far from reaching the point of affluence. However, this state of existence still makes them feel very satisfied, and relatively speaking, the early years in the Eastern Continent were much worse.
After coming to the Western Continent, the half-bloods can at least have a house of their own, which can be used to shelter from the wind and rain, and they don't have to worry about being bombed away by the rulers of the land in the cold night. No matter how much the Lepeilian people in the Eastern Continent despised them, the number of half-blooded people living in the small fishing village at the southern end of the Western Continent continued unabated, and their lives gradually settled down, and they used their wisdom to develop this small fishing village into the only commercial port in the world, Limbo City.
