Chapter 209: Pure Yang Scarf
Chu said: "It seems that you have quite a lot of research on these hats worn by Taoist priests, so you can talk about it, and then talk about what hats you have?" ”
Xiao Tianshu smiled: "Although I am not a monk, I have studied a lot of Taoism and ......."
The hats worn by Taoist priests are called "scarves", and there are nine kinds of hats, called "nine scarves". As the saying goes, "there are nine scarves in the Tao", but the name of the nine scarves is not fixed. The nine scarves recorded in Min Xiaogen's "Qing Rules and Mysteries" in the Qing Dynasty are Tang scarves, Chonghe scarves, Haoran scarves, Xiaoyao scarves, Ziyang scarves, one-word scarves, Lun scarves, Sanjiao scarves and Jiuyang scarves. Since the end of the Qing Dynasty, the changes have been greater, and the nine scarves that are popular now are: mixed yuan scarves, Zhuangzi scarves, pure yang scarves, Haoran scarves, Xiaoyao scarves, lotus leaf scarves, sun scarves, word scarves, bag scarves and other nine kinds.
Mixed scarf: also known as "crown scarf". Round, hard-shelled, with holes in the top of the hat to expose the bun. The posterior upper part is slightly raised to show detachment. The mixed scarf is the most formal turban of Taoism, and it is stipulated that the Taoist priest who holds the "crown scarf" ceremony can wear it, and now this restriction is gradually broken, and there are not a few Taoist priests who have not worn the crown scarf with this scarf. The Quanzhen sect Gao Gong used this towel when holding the Jiao ceremony, and pinned a Taoist crown on the exposed bun. Zhengyi Taoist priests have no tradition of growing hair today, for convenience, they will sew the mixed yuan scarf and the Taoist crown together to wear, and some of the hat tops are also folded out of the square corners, becoming a variant of the mixed yuan scarf, the Taiwanese Taoist priest is called "net scarf", also known as "horn crown".
Zhuangzi scarf: also known as "Nanhua scarf". The bottom of the cap is rounded, and the top is sloping and flat. The crown of the hat is raised back and upwards to show detachment. The front of the hat is decorated with a "hat front" (see below). It is mostly worn in autumn and winter, and Taoist priests who do not grow hair or old people who lose their hair like to wear this scarf.
Pure Yang Towel: Also known as "Lotte Towel", "Huayang Towel", "Ziyang Towel", "Jiuyang Towel" or "Jiuliang Towel". The bottom of the cap is rounded, and the top is sloping and flat. The crown of the hat is raised back and upwards to show detachment. There are nine beams hanging down above the front of the hat, and "nine" is the number of pure yang, representing the meaning of Taoism "nine turns to return to Dan". The front of the hat is inlaid with a hat in the center. The current Zhengyi Taoist priests wear this scarf more.
Haoran towel: that is, "hood". The inside is made of cotton, which is used to protect against the wind and cold. Taoist priests in the north (especially elderly Taoist priests) can use this towel in winter windy and snowy weather.
Scarf: It is a square (also round) scarf, wrapped in a bun and tied with two long sword head streamers, called a scarf. The other is to use a Zhuangzi scarf or a pure yang scarf, decorated with a beautiful cloud head pattern, and the hat is affixed with two long sword head streamers, also known as the Xiaoyao scarf (known as the "thunder scarf" in ancient times). The young Taoist priest likes to wear this scarf, and between actions, the streamers are swaying, and they look chic and free. However, some old Taoist temples thought that wearing this towel was not dignified and abolished.
Lotus leaf scarf: a kind of scarf of the Shu people in the Song Dynasty, it was called the flower top turban, and the descendants and even women wore it, and there were two feet hanging down on the back, called the Xiaoyao scarf. Song Dynasty Mi Fu "Painting History" has a record of this scarf: "Shizi at the beginning of the country are top deerskin crowns, its legacy also, there is no headscarf..., it is to remove the skin crown, comb the horns to add, in order to enter the headscarf. The grate is about to be sent out, but it is a guest. Cover it like this, there is a silk silk behind it, as a plunder, sweep up the hair, the top hat goes in and out..., and the back of it sees the use of violet for the top turban, called the forehead, and still dare not learn the turban. Afterwards, the people began to take the purple sara as the long top turban, hanging to the back, to the head of the other Shu people, and now the scholars are wearing the Shu people flower top turban, a little scarf, a free scarf. "Soon after the Quanzhen Taoist priest became a monk, he wore this scarf often because his hair was not fully tied up, or when the weather was hot in summer. Wearing this scarf, like a fairy, it looks like a fairy, and it is particularly free. Therefore, it is named Xiaoyao scarf.
Sun scarf: i.e. straw hat or brown hat. Taoist priests work under the scorching sun in summer and can wear this scarf. In order to distinguish themselves from society, some Taoist priests dig holes in the top of their hats to expose their hair buns, or paint Taoist patterns such as Bagua and Tai Chi on the brim of their hats, or write the name of the Taoist temple where they live.
Scarf: That is, a strap for binding hair, each end is decorated with a hat, and the two hats are overlapped and buckled together, so that they can be worn on the head. This is the easiest of all the towels. Taoism stipulates that you must not enter the temple bareheaded, and you must wear a scarf.
Towel: also known as "scarf". but a square piece of cloth with bands at the corners, that it could be tied to the head. The front of the hat can be decorated with a hat in the middle, but most of them do not use a hat. The scarf is the most informal kind of headscarf in Taoism, and it is worn by those who have not yet apprenticed to the Taoist sect, and some people believe that it should not be included in the nine scarves. "Sancai Tuhui": "The clothes of the ancient scarves are also the clothes of the scholars, and the clothes of the scholars since the end of the Han Dynasty." "However, some official Taoist priests now also wear this scarf.
Although Taoism has the name of "nine scarves", the general Taoist priests only take a few kinds of daily wear. Now the Taoist priests of the Quanzhen school use mixed yuan scarves, Zhuangzi scarves and one-word scarves in their daily lives, and the Taoist priests of the Zhengyi school use pure yang scarves and net scarves more often.
Xuan Chu just wanted to hear it, just introduce the names of this Taoist priest's hat casually, but I didn't expect to open the conversation box these days and tell myself endlessly.
Chu said: "I just wanted to hear what the hat I was wearing, but I didn't expect you to think so much......"
Xiao Tianshu thought that Xuan Chu was praising himself, and said happily for a while: "If you talk about this hat, what I just talked about is the scarf worn by the Taoist priest, and when doing it, the Taoist priest wears a crown, and this crown is in the ......."
Xuan Chu was afraid that Xiao Tianshu would talk endlessly, so he hurriedly interrupted: "Okay, okay, okay, you are really talking endlessly, if I let you talk about it, wouldn't you give me a lecture on Taoism, why do you keep your hair?" ”
Xiao Tianshu said with a smile: "I'm just talking about the crown of the Taoist, the yellow crown (that is, the crescent crown or the glaive crown), the Wuyue crown (covered with a bucket shape, engraved with the "true shape of the five mountains", which can only be worn by those who have received the ordination), the star crown (covered with a bucket shape, engraved with the shape of the five bucket stars, worn when the old cultivators worship and fight), the lotus crown (also known as the Shangqing crown, which is generally worn by high-level masters), the demon crown, the cupola crown, the five old crowns (lotus petal-shaped, embroidered in the middle of the five old statues, worn when doing super-degrees for high-skill masters) and so on. ……”
Xuan Chu said: "Brother Tang Seng, the Taoist priest grows hair and beard, one is to serve as a sign of Taoism, the second is to conform to the laws of nature, and the third is to show filial piety. Fourth, for health care, people must comb their hair frequently, and regular combing of hair helps brain blood circulation. The brain is the master of the human body, the brain is healthy, and people are less sick, so Taoist priests often have beards. Isn't it? I know ...... this."
Chu Chu rolled his eyes and thought to himself, he went to ask him such a little thing, and he talked to himself at length, and it was endless.
