Chapter 4: The Children Forced to Work (Part I)
Alver Eden looked at the raspberries wrapped in a scarf in his arms and the newly renovated drain with a little difficulty.
No one answered him at the drain, and the school was frighteningly quiet at a time when it should have been full of laughter and slapstick, which meant that he had been discovered during his lunch break, and it was not as simple as once or twice, the new fence at the drain was made of orc forging technology, and the quality was more than a little better than that of the goods poured molten iron into the mold, and it was not something that could be bought on the spot at the blacksmith shop; the muddy floor of the drain had been replaced with green bricks, and the rusty and broken iron rods of the old fence were neatly placed in the courtyard, facing the drain。
It must have been done by the head of the guard, and no matter which student makes a mistake and is punished, he will find a way to tease and ridicule him.
Alfer staggered through the east door, wondering how angry Krent would be with him.
The school was much larger than the other buildings in the vicinity, and in the past, students would think that the most unfortunate time of the day was to run in the morning when they exercised around the inside of the wall, but Alfer now felt that the school could be built a little bigger, because walking from the largest drainage outlet to the east gate was not much slower than the mage teleporting a teleportation array for tens of kilometers.
At noon in June, Alfer's face was red in the heat, and the fabric on the back of his clothes was stuck to his skin with sweat.
Old Krent's face was the same color as the new green brick of the drain, and his lips trembled twice before he spoke.
"Elver!" the old man's voice was full of anger, and he couldn't say anything for a moment, snatched the square scarf wrapped in the raspberry, dropped the word "confiscation" and turned around and walked out into the courtyard. Alver hesitated, his steps slower than before, but he was gently pushed from behind.
"Go and apologize, won't you?"
The gentle voice comes from the scout teacher Alessi, who has a good personality and is even gentler than hers, and the students love her.
"Headmaster Krent is going to eat me. Alver lowered his head and muttered, he had never seen Krent's face as ugly as it had just been, and in the past, the old man would have been angry and would have said something on the spot, such as "You will eventually create a great cause", or "This world is ten thousand times sadter than before the Great Collapse", or "Only you can save this continent" Before, some adults who came looking for children would have said that Old Krent was like a cult leader, but today, Alfer could swear that he had never experienced since he was eleven years old when the old man had only spoken a few words after a student had made a mistake, and only confiscated his raspberries.
"Mr. Krent is just worried—I've been with you a few times, and a pack of wolves has recently been spotted on the North Slope," Alessi said, turning to Nunu, Krent's back, and continued, "It was Mr. Krent who sent me to follow you, instead of tying you up and bringing you back and yelling at you in front of the whole school in the courtyard, so I have to apologize and thank you." ”
When Alver heard this, he smiled gratefully at Alessi and chased after Krent.
In the principal's company, Alfer was still yelled at a few words, but compared to the "tie up" assumed by Teacher Alessi, it was 10,000 times better.
And he was allowed to take back the raspberries, but he had to give a handful to Mr. Alessi.
The evening class was held on the top floor of the Mage's Tower, it was alchemy, and as a kindergarten child, Alph had mastered all the basics of how to mix ingredients, how to dilute potions by feeling, and even simple healing and buff potions could be boiled on his own, and he would never pour the liquor directly into the cauldron (it took weeks for his eyebrows to fully grow back the last time he did so), nor could he tell the difference between the chameleon's and the dry skin of a tree lizard.
Alph happened to hear the ladies in charge of cleaning the school's sheets chatting and said that no other place, even the best Alchemist Guild or the Mage Guild's academy, would teach such content to children his age.
The teacher of alchemy was a taciturn middle-aged man named Telavi, who had one missing front tooth, some leaky speech, a thick scar on his philtrum and upper lip due to injury, and a side that looked a little like a parrot. In addition to the necessary lectures, Mr. Travi never said a word and was the least interfering teacher in the lives of his students.
Today is the children divided into groups, the teacher randomly selected a few potions in the booklet and handed them to several groups to boil separately, Alver and the yellow-haired Vincent and the little freckle-faced girl Hannah were in a group to boil Leviathan potion - a potion mixed in animal feed, which can make the animal grow quickly and be two or three times larger than the normal size, but the animals that grow up eating this potion are not particularly good in meat quality and taste, but they are just full of food.
Vinson was the oldest in the class, fifteen years old, and spoke viciously, always making excessive jokes about Hannah. Everyone said that he used to be the child of a rich family, but he lost his parents in the Great Collapse, and his uncle took possession of the property he could inherit, and he was thrown into this school in the middle of nowhere, which was very heavy on learning, and he never gave a penny of child support to the principal, let alone come to see Vincent.
While cutting the tail of the bantam elephant, Vincent taunted that he had to steal a little of it and mix it into Hannah's water cup after boiling the potion, because she was too short.
Hannah, on the other hand, is a somewhat tepid girl who doesn't seem to want to be a fan of Vincent at all, so she prepares the ingredients, adds distilled water to the cauldron and makes a fire, watching the "Basic Recipe for Alchemy" and waiting for the water to boil.
Vincent was bored, so he had to make potions honestly, and after adding the ingredients, he continued to laugh and harass Hannah.
"Hannah, Hannah?" said Vincent, smiling as he tapped the edge of the cauldron with a long-handled wooden spoon, "How about I hire someone to beat the cauldron as a drum to the music for your prom when you get married?"
Elph didn't want to pay attention to Vincent at first, but Vincent's speech was too annoying, and Alph grabbed his hand holding the crucible, and answered with a smile: "I think the child abandoned by the rich family should be the one who knocked on the crucible and went to someone's wedding ball to beg for money, right?"
Vincend's ears turned red, and with his other hand he grabbed a handful of precious dried foamed mushrooms from the material box and threw them into Elver's cauldron, Hannah screamed "Run, everyone", and reached out to lift the table to stop the foaming mushrooms from coming into contact with the Leviathan potion.
Unfortunately, however, some of the foamed mushrooms came into contact with the unconcentrated Leviathan potion, swelled up like a pig's bladder that had been rapidly inflated, and then turned into a dense foam, gradually filling the classroom, and spreading outside the window.
Thankfully, the Kindergarten children all escaped, standing in the courtyard and watching the giant foaming mushroom reactant with Leviathan potion cascade down from the top of the Mage Tower.
Alver looked at Vincent, remembered the raspberry incident at noon, and prayed inwardly that the headmaster had better be discouraged.
Teacher Travi, who was missing a front tooth, whistled because he spoke too quickly, but none of the children laughed, and several of the students around him were ordered to run to call the principal and the cleaning lady respectively, and Hannah punched Vincent in the stomach and went angrily towards Teacher Travi.
