Chapter 49: The Invading Wolves

Most of the inhabitants make a living by hunting, or raise cows and reindeer. In Soviet times, Oymyakon was already famous for its longevity.

"Добро пожаловать друзьям издалека, (Russian, welcome friends from afar. "We were warmly welcomed by the old man walking at the entrance of the village, and there were not many visitors to Oymyakon, so soon the whole town knew about our visit.

"You didn't come here to experience the minus 40 degrees cold, did you?" Andre made a unique milk tea for us.

"Oymyakon will have what we want, right, Andrey?"

Bai Yaxi looked at Andre with a smile, there will not be a person who can speak Chinese here, I know what Bai Yaxi is suspicious.

"Would you like to taste the Hayek I made?"

Andre did not answer Bai Yaxi's question.

"You've always lived here?" I took Hayek from him, a dish unique to Oymyakon that looked just like the ice cream we usually eat.

"My mother lives in Beijing, and I go there to accompany her in the winter."

I nodded slightly, Andre was a little strange, or rather, the people in this town were a little strange.

When night falls, the brilliant aurora borealis outside the house streaks over the town, which is nothing strange to the locals.

"It's so beautiful, it's like a firework without a sound." Bai Yaxi looked out the window, girls are always full of yearning for beautiful things.

"There's something weird about it." Mu Lin can always predict some things that ordinary people can't predict, which may be related to his Qilin bloodline.

"Under normal circumstances, the aurora should be floating in the sky more than 100 kilometers above the ground, but the aurora we see now seems to be very close to us." Zifeng's eyebrows tightened, and he looked a little worried.

"It's a place where people are inaccessible and the climate is harsh, so it's perfect to bury those unseen secrets here."

I looked at Bai Yaxi, who seemed to be avoiding me, consciously or unconsciously, since entering Oymyakon.

"Andrei's identity is suspicious." Bai Yaxi turned back to us and said.

"The people in the village are wary of us at every turn, and not just because we are outsiders."

Mu Lin looked at the aurora above, "Someone has leaked our whereabouts, there must be some secret here." ”

I couldn't sleep that night, and I have rarely been able to sleep since what happened at Goosen College. Li Mubai and Ji Han's life and death are unknown, Jiang Qi's life hangs by a thread, I don't know if I should continue to insist.

Early the next morning, Bai Yaxi began to prepare things to enter the mountain, Oymyakon's secret will never be in the town, I don't know what makes them so sure that Oymyakon's secret is buried in the mountains.

In the afternoon, a few villagers hurried back from the taiga behind Oymyakon, there was no one in the village to communicate with us except Andrei, the Yakuts did not speak English, and even Russian was not proficient, so I relied on the suffocating English to communicate with them.

I tried to talk to the people in the village about the Nibelungen, but they didn't believe that there were dragons in the world, and they told me that they were dinosaur fossils, that there were no real dragons, that there was nothing we were looking for, and I could vaguely feel that they were hiding something.

André told me that there are a lot of wolves in the vicinity of Oymyakon, which hunt large prey in groups, and their dens are easy to spot, usually dug into the ground, up to three or four meters long, with large mounds at the entrance.

Andrei also told me that the villagers who rushed back just now were because they found a new wolf den nearby, and the appearance of a new wolf den usually means the invasion of a new wolf pack, and they will duel with the original lord here, and then the victorious side will continue to rule the place, and the losing side will leave to find a new territory.

The struggle between wolves is brutal, and the natural world of Siberia adheres to the immutable law of survival of the fittest, and all creatures here, including the Yakuts, have endured the severe tests that nature brings to them.

In the evening, Bai Yaxi came from the house with a basin of hot water, which is something that every visitor to Oymyakon wants to try. Splashing hot water outdoors is a unique life experience, when you sprinkle hot water into the air, the water will instantly explode like fireworks, extremely shocking, and the scene is particularly beautiful in the sunset.

André used his camera to record this beautiful moment for us. The temperature difference between indoor and outdoor can sometimes reach 80 degrees, and when we walk into the house from the outside, we will bring special effects, and we will be covered in a layer of snow and mist, just like the gods in Journey to the West, these strange experiences amazed us.

Of course, we didn't come to Oymyakon to experience the cold, the mystical story of the Nibelungen was the root of our visit to Oymyakon.

I learned this secret during the last conversation between Li Muqing and Bai Yaxi, but I still don't know exactly what it refers to.

What does the mysterious dragon in Western legends have to do with Ren Yaoyao who is far away in the thunder pool, the two seem to have nothing to do with each other, after a whole day of visiting and exploring, I have less and less time left, I want to find the relationship between the Nibelungen legend and Ren Yaoyao in these two days, and then prove that the celestial envoy in Bai Yaxi's mouth is not from another world.

It's a difficult task, and it's impossible to travel at night in Oymyakon because the cold can disorient you. I was in Andrey's canvas tent, but my mind was still thinking about the new wolf pack during the day.

Siberian wolves are not adventurous animals, they are known for their steadiness and cunning, and a few homeless wolves will not rush into the territory of another group.

The next morning I begged André to take us to visit these newcomers, whose den was not far from Oymyakon, which was risky, and it was more dangerous to build a home near human territory than to invade the territory of another race.

Siberian wolves have an extremely keen sense of smell, and they can detect our invasion even from a distance of several thousand meters, and it is very difficult for me to walk in such snow and ice with my mutilated left leg.

Suddenly I thought of the Drain again, the cold here stopped it from Lake Baikal, and its seemingly heavy helmet could not withstand the cold of Oymyakon. But not all animals can't survive here, André said that there are many wild animals in the taiga here, and today we were lucky enough to see one of them.

Moose, five hundred meters away from us, I saw for the first time this strange creature with horns on its head, its coat is dark brown, and it is said that it has a darker coat in summer.

The moose has a large head, small eyes, a particularly long face, a very short neck, a fat and somewhat droopy nose, and a swollen and elongated upper lip, which is slightly longer than the lower lip. It doesn't seem to have upper canine teeth, unlike other cervids. Both the male and the female have a fleshy column under their throats, on which there are a lot of drooping hairs, which Andrei says is called the jaw sac, and the male is more developed.

Their bodies are short and thick, appearing disproportionate to their four slender legs. It also has a short tail, only about 7-10 cm.

The male beast has horns on its head, which Andre says are the largest of the deer species, and their horns have a very special shape, unlike other deer, not forked, but flattened in the shape of a shovel, and the horn surface is unusually rough.

I've been watching it for a long time, and I can't imagine that the moose, which looks so bulky, is actually very nimble. André says the moose are not aggressive, but if a human harms its cubs or invades its territory, it gives a symbolic warning.

Siberian wolves hunt them in packs, and capturing an adult moose is enough for a pack to feast on for three to five days. Andre told us to lie in ambush nearby and keep quiet, this is a sturdy buck that has been wandering here for a long time, and the wolves in the vicinity are likely to have their eyes on it.

The newly relocated wolves are desperate to eat, and food is not scarce this season, but there is no reason for them to let such tempting prey go untouched.

August and September are the mating season for moose, and they have to race against the clock, because this is the only season when mating can they be sure that they will welcome the newborn of the herd in the following summer. Summers in Eastern Siberia are very short, and newborns of the population will hardly survive without giving birth to their young.

André said the stag was probably wandering here to wait for the late doe, and that mating requires an open space, which is a good fit.

Siberian wolves are familiar with the habits of moose, and they will lie in ambush nearby and wait for the moose to start mating before suddenly attacking. If you can kill two adult moose at the same time, it is a huge compliment for them. They divide the moose meat into many pieces and bury them in the snow near the wolf's den to ensure that their young have food to eat during the winter.

This is a great wisdom, I have read books about the hunting of wolves, they have their own strict discipline, and the Siberian wolf is no exception, Andrei and I searched around with binoculars, but we never found any sign of the wolves.

But Andrei told me that the wolves must be nearby, they are not easily exposed without the command of the wolf, sometimes they will lie in ambush for hours without moving, and it is not easy to ambush in the snow of Eastern Siberia. Covered in permafrost all year round, the snow here is unusually cold, and humans simply can't lie motionless in such a place for hours.

We wrapped the reindeer skin tightly around our bodies, and then covered our faces with hats sewn from sable fur, revealing only one pair of eyes. We subconsciously huddled together, Andre was okay, such weather was not too cold for him. In fact, it only started to snow here a week ago, but now it's snow-white.
