Chapter 60: Gold and Jade (3)

Jade represents the connotation of beauty, respect, love and mutual help, symbolizes Chinese civilization, and also interprets the Olympic spirit of unity and friendship. The jade gold medal not only reflects the respect for the winner, but also is a beautiful handicraft, which is the product of the combination of Chinese and Western cultures.

From the workmanship of the gold medal, we can find that the core process of gold inlaid jade lies in inlay, not pasting, which is significantly different from the "gold inlaid jade" with gold leaf in the market.

Although the reputation of gold and jade in the market is polarized, it is gratifying that the traditional gold and jade art is still continued, and the art of gold and jade can also be seen in many large exhibitions.

It is hoped that the real traditional gold and jade craftsmanship can be recognized by more people, so that this old craft can continue to be passed on.

"Gold inlaid jade" is the style used in the medal design of the Beijing Olympic Games, which symbolizes the "golden and jade good fate" in traditional Chinese culture, and reflects the praise of the Olympic spirit and the praise of athletes by Chinese.

Its design scheme is very innovative, breaking through the tradition of a single material in the design of medals in any previous Olympic Games, and incorporating typical Chinese cultural elements; The medal hook of the Beijing Olympic Games with the idea of "gold inlaid jade" is evolved from the traditional Chinese jade double dragon Pu Wenhuang; The whole medal is noble and elegant, with strong Chinese characteristics, which not only reflects the praise of the winners, but also vividly interprets the values of the Chinese nation since ancient times, which is another "combination of Chinese and Western" in the image landscape project of the Beijing Olympic Games with Chinese civilization and Olympic spirit.

The medals before the "jade" and the "gold and jade" process were completed in the Shanghai Mint of the China Banknote Printing and Minting Corporation in Putuo District, Shanghai. The raw materials needed for the medals before the "inlaid jade" were all brought to Shanghai by BHP Billiton's Canninon lead-silver mine in Queensland, Australia, and the Econdida and Spence copper mines in Chile. Among them, gold-bearing copper concentrate from the Escondida copper mine provided 13.04 kilograms of gold needed to make the gold medal, lead concentrate from the Cannington lead-silver mine provided 1.34 tonnes of silver needed to make the gold and silver medals, and the Spence copper mine in Chile provided 6.93 tonnes of electrolytic copper for the bronze and commemorative medals.

The raw materials used to make the gold, silver and bronze medals for the Beijing Olympics were smelted and refined by BHP's partners, China Tongling Nonferrous Metals Group Co., Ltd. and Henan Yuguang Gold and Lead Group Co., Ltd., before arriving at the Shanghai Mint.

The combination of jade and metal will adopt a special process, which can ensure that the jade will not fall off and meet the needs of wearing and displaying. According to Wang Yipeng, a professor at the School of Design at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, the designers designed a buffer zone on the edge of the inner edge of the jade ring, but there will also be collisions between the jade and the metal.

Finally, a damping material is added in the middle, and the liquid damping material is poured into the gap between the jade and the metal and then solidified, so that the jade and the metal "fit tightly" and play a role in shock absorption. After dozens of experiments, even if it falls from a height of 20 meters, the "gold inlaid jade" can be unharmed.

On March 13, 2008, Qinghai Kunlun jade, Shanghai Mint, Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee and appraisal experts signed the Kunlun jade handover acceptance certificate, and all the jade rings used in 3,030 Olympic medals were sent to the Shanghai Mint to wait for the "gold inlaid jade" project.

In June of the same year, the Shanghai Mint will complete the final production of the medals and officially deliver them to the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee. After the Olympic Games in August, the winners of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will wear the medals of "Golden Jade Relationship" with Chinese characteristics and return to their hometowns, taking away the blessings of the Chinese people for the Olympic Movement.
