Chapter VI Red News
Lorenzo walked out into the empty street and sat down on a bench not far from the alley, where he had slain the demons, his sharp spike sword piercing through their hearts, severing the spine that connected the skull.
At the moment they were nothing more than a monstrous mass of abominable flesh and blood, with an unsettling aura on them, rotting and dying in the darkness little by little.
Reaching into his pajama pocket, Lorenzo rummaged through a crumpled cigarette, rummaged through his pockets and couldn't find a lighter, he could only slightly trigger the secret blood, the blazing white fireworks ignited the tobacco, and he breathed hard, swallowing the clouds.
Lorenzo recognized the identities of these demons from the wreckage of the carpet, that is, the young people who were drinking and vomiting in their own homes, and when he saw them, there was nothing unusual about them, and there were no sources of erosion around them that could alienate humans, which meant that they had been twisted into this form by some guy who appeared out of thin air.
Watson was able to do this, Lorenzo felt that he was not wrong, not long ago Watson turned one of the young people into his own carrier, she should have come to find herself, but when she didn't know what happened, she detonated the erosion and turned these people into demons.
In Lorenzo's cognition, Watson is not a random killer, at least she won't kill a person in such a troublesome way, so what is she alienating these people for?
Dealing with an enemy?
Lorenzo speculated about what had happened.
So why alienate humans? Watson could have taken advantage of the [gap] to fight......
Lorenzo's thoughts were abruptly interrupted, and the handwriting of blood appeared in front of his eyes.
"Don't use Gabriel ......"
Unless the enemy is ineffective or undefeatable in the Gap.
"The Silencer. β
Lorenzo could only think of the title.
In his calculations, Watson invaded the body of a young man, and she was about to come to her, but was stopped by the sudden appearance of the Silencer, and when the [Gap] battle was ineffective, she alienated them into demons in order to repel the enemy.
And what about Watson?
She's not here now, is she dead, or has she escaped, why did she leave such a message?
Lorenzo thought about it, feeling a pang of uneasiness about the unknown.
He had faced the Silent Ones more than once, and the monsters were terrifying, but they weren't a mortal threat to Lorenzo, and he might not be able to kill them completely, but Lorenzo was confident that he would survive them, and so was Watson, but this time was different.
Lorenzo looked down the alley, and his gaze fell back to the window of his room? The distance between the two was not far, only a few dozen meters? Even if Watson was facing a formidable opponent like Lawrence, Lorenzo felt that she had enough time to come to him and wake himself up.
But Watson didn't do that, he was so close to her, but she didn't ask for help from the whole time, but left such a warning handwriting.
Lorenzo clenched his fists.
The enemy is so strong that Watson thinks that if he comes to him, he will be involved in a crisis, and the combined strength of the two may not be able to resist the enemy's attack.
There was no sign of another person at the scene, only the corpse of a demon in one place, and with the bloody warning, Lorenzo guessed the nature of the enemy.
The Silencer, but much more powerful than the Silencer Lorenzo had ever seen, and he remembered what was written in Shermans's notes, that knowledge is cursed, and that the more he knew, the faster he died.
Many times Lorenzo felt that he knew enough, and in Maruli he even called for the Silencer, but he did this, and he was not hunted down by the Silencer, which for a time made him doubt the accuracy of Shermans's notes, but when he thought about it, it seemed reasonable again, after all, not everyone had the power of Lorenzo.
He is a special case, a special case of survival, and a special case needs to be dealt with by special means.
"So Watson, have you discovered something? have you discovered something so important that you have met an enemy that is like a nightmare?"
Lorenzo whispered, a sound from a distant place under the silent night sky interrupting his thoughts.
At the end of the street there was a roar of iron, as if something had torn the wind apart, and when I looked up, there were countless shadows behind the hazy mist, and they were so fast that the next moment they broke through the fog barrier and appeared in front of Lorenzo's eyes.
The iron snake shook off the moist water vapor and slowly stopped in front of Lorenzo, and with the rush of steam, the car door was opened, and the man strode out.
"Mr. Holmos, meet again. β
Gawain was dressed in a black robe, his whole person was like a ghost in the night, and his expression was as resolute as ever, like a solid piece of steel.
"It's not slow. β
Lorenzo nodded, then stood up.
The Purifier monitored every part of the city, and from the beginning of its design, they were prepared to treat it as a fortress, and in Lawrence's prophecy, this might be the last city that humanity would hold out to.
"The peepers sensed the erosion in the vicinity, it was intense, but it lasted for a short time, only for a moment. β
Gawain told Lorenzo that he was on his way the moment the alarm was triggered, and that all this information was later conveyed to him on the road through the communicator.
"Yes, it's calm down now. Lorenzo said, glancing at the soldiers behind Gawain.
"A new batch of rapid response teams?"
"Yes, after Lancelot's death, I'll be in charge of that. β
Gawain nodded and said, this team is on standby twenty-four hours a day, and will arrive at the scene as soon as there is an abnormal situation, just like now.
"But I didn't see the Armor of Original Sin. β
Lorenzo looked at the Iron Serpents parked in front of his house, and they didn't look like they were loaded with the Armor of Original Sin.
"Because no, after all, the source of the erosion is near your house, I think you will solve it before we come, we just came to control the scene. β
Gawain said that he was led into the alley by Lorenzo, and as soon as he stepped inside, he smelled the blood rushing towards his face, and through the blurred shadows, he could see one distorted silhouette after another.
"You see, that's it. β
"Really?" Lorenzo was skeptical.
"False, the Original Sin Armor will take more time to be transported, and it will arrive later. Gawain said expressionlessly.
Lorenzo looked at Gawain with a strange expression, he thought for a moment, and then asked.
"What are you...... Sense of humor?"
"It will be easier for you to get along with a shrike if he says something like this. Gawain replied.
"Did the shrike say that his expression should not be too stiff?" Lorenzo looked at Gawain's iron face, and he really didn't feel any sense of humor, "Don't embarrass yourself, friend, let's deal with this first." β
Lorenzo said as he walked into the darkness first, following the path he remembered, stepping on the blood that had not yet dried up, erasing the message Watson had left for him.
There is no need to tell this information to the purification agency, it is enough for Lorenzo to have this fear alone, and in the face of such a crisis, the more people who know, the more difficult it is for Lorenzo to defend himself.
So the fewer people who know, the better, and it is better that even the last ones who know will disappear one day, hiding these secrets behind the fence of ignorance, so that the lambs may live in ignorance but happily.
"Common demon incidents?"
Gawain looked around the scene, like an extremely ordinary demon incident.
"Almost, I was sleeping, and suddenly I felt the waves of erosion, and then I came to kill them. β
Lorenzo said that his explanation was not perfect, that swords and guns could not create the strange wounds on the demons, and that the injuries created by bone spurs when demons fought each other, and that according to common sense, demons would not fight civil wars.
"Is that so? It doesn't look like a wife's anomaly. β
Gawain trusts Lorenzo very much, after all, Lorenzo is a witcher, an expert in hunting demons, there is no need to be suspicious of the expert's words, and this expert has always hated demons, and he will not suddenly make any apostasy.
Listening to Gawain's reassuring words, Lorenzo felt ashamed of his trust in everyone for a while, of course, these were all nonsense in his head.
Lorenzo took one last check to see if there were any missing parts.
"The scavenger is on his way, so we'll take care of the rest. Gawain said to Lorenzo.
"Hmm...... But there's no sleepiness at all. β
Lorenzo said as he walked out of the alley and looked out into the end of the city's night sky.
In the deepest depths of the darkness there was a faint light slowly rising, like gray lines, outlining the outline of the city and shining brighter with time.
It's dawn.
"I'm going to change my clothes, then I'll lend me an Iron Snake and take me to the Perpetual Pump. β
"I see. β
Gawain knew Lorenzo's next itinerary, and the resumption of the Red News incident was a big deal in the purification mechanism, and people at the level of the knight chief basically knew about it.
Soon Lorenzo returned to the streets, dressed in his usual attire, a loose black coat with a low brim, a shadow completely hidden from his face, and a cane in his hand, looking very normal.
Gawain didn't look at Lorenzo with the usual eyes, he knew full well that there must be countless weapons hidden under this loose coat, and among the slender canes, there was also tough steel enough to cut flesh and blood.
"Let's go...... Do you want to inform the shrike?"
Lorenzo walked halfway into the Iron Serpent, then poked his head out and asked Gawain.
"No, the Iron Serpent will carry you to pick up the Shrike first, and you will arrive at the Perpetual Pump together. β
"Sounds pretty good. β
The doors snapped shut, and with a hail of steam, the serpent sped along the street tracks, toward the glimmer at the end of the horizon.
......
"So, that's the reason?"
The man in the dimly lit carriage said in an unacceptable tone, with a ridiculous nightcap on his head and neatly dressed in neat clothes, as if he had been forcibly dragged out of a warm bed.
"Or else?"
Lorenzo glanced at the barbed wire window, where the whole old Dunling was waking up as the sun rose, and the steam erupted from the corners of the street, as if a giant was breathing hard.
"It's all like that, I can't go back to the house and lie in bed in a daze, it's better to settle things sooner. β
Lorenzo shifted his gaze back to the dimly lit carriage, and after leaving the scene to Gawain, Lorenzo couldn't find any reason to get back asleep, so he started the day early.
"You don't need to rest, but I do!"
Shrike cried out hoarsely, probably in exasperation, and grabbed the nightcap from his head and threw it on the ground.
"It's just a few hours early, nothing, right?"
Looking at the very irritable mood of the shriek, Lorenzo realized for the first time that this guy was actually angry to get up.
"How many hours early? I just got off work late at night, and I've just fallen asleep for a few hours!"
The shrike couldn't help but shout, as the tension between Gaulnalo and Invig grewed, the purification agency was also busy in this dreary atmosphere, and the control of the lower city was tightened, and every stranger who smuggled into it was strictly investigated, and for these shrikes he had been working overtime for several days.
He is now like a poor employee who has been oppressed by a black-hearted company, but the shrike can be regarded as a "management officer" in his own right, and as a result, even people of his level will still be dominated by people of higher rank.
"You have to get used to this kind of thing, Shrike, but I didn't expect you to live so close. β
Lorenzo didn't listen to the shrike at all, and it would be hellish if he could.
A few minutes ago, the Iron Serpent stopped in front of a building not far from the Lower Town, and then Lorenzo realized that this was the real residence of the Shrike, but it was right to think about it, how could a creature like the Shrike sleep peacefully in the dangerous Lower Town? Presumably, there must be a secret passage under the building that leads to the Lower City, through which the Shrike passes through during the day and becomes the king who controls the Lower City, and at night he takes off his mask and returns to the calm to experience a rare peace.
Of course, all this was broken by Lorenzo, and when he rushed into the shrike room, he woke up from his bed with a very funny expression, which can be called a discoloration.
"Ah...... So is there another demon appearing? β
After complaining for a while, the shrike calmed down, leaning back in his chair and looking at the window of the car wrapped in barbed wire.
The Iron Serpent walked with its back to the rising sunlight, and crossed the rising buildings and streets to arrive at a lifeless world.
The industrial area is still what I remember, a barren land with countless large machinery on the ground, some of which are still functioning, rumbling, digging ore out of the solid earth, others covered with dust and crawling on the gray-white rocks, like dead giants, whose flesh and blood have been corroded by the wind, revealing the bones of steel beneath.
In the remnants of the distant night, there is a rising smoke that reaches the heavens and the earth, and below the smoke is an unquenchable fire, as if it were stars from the ground, illuminating the path of progress.
"Thanks to you, it's been a long time since the Mechanics have been operating at full capacity like this, and the last time they did so was during the Glorious War. β
Shrike lamented.
With a whistle, the train drove the ore over the gray mountains, into the burning machinery yard, and then left with brand new machinery.
They were sealed in dark green iron boxes, plastered with warning signs, so that even those who didn't know about them would know at first glance that there was a war that had not yet been ignited.
"Are you prepared?"
Lorenzo looked at these and his expression couldn't help but become heavy.
"To be precise, the big people above have been prepared, you don't know how high the output of the three generations of armor is in the past few days, it is said that the output of these days is equivalent to the sum of our previous strengths. β
Shrike shook his head worriedly, then said to Lorenzo.
"You're right, this thing would be a very good weapon against demons, but when it faced humans, it would be a terrible slaughtering machine. β
Lorenzo did not respond, he had been worried about such an incident before, he thought he had the ability to control it all, but in reality he was still too naΓ―ve.
But this time he had a different idea, a still somewhat naΓ―ve idea, and the demon of the end flashed in front of him again, perhaps...... Maybe these weapons aren't meant to be used against humans? Maybe they're also used against demons?
Lorenzo thought so, and the Iron Serpent stopped.
