Chapter 40: The Code of Safety for Scribes
"I'm here to be a scribe!"
Karl took out the bronze plaque that Daddy John had given him and handed it to the Battle Nun who was blocking the way.
A battle nun took the sign, checked it carefully, and after making sure it was correct, returned it to Karl, saying, "You're late, the scribe should start working when the sun is just above the horizon." β
"Yes, because a greater and glorious thing has delayed my journey. β
Karl had already thought of his words, he clenched his right hand into his chest, made a pious and serious appearance, and said: "Her Royal Highness the Great Heavenly Song Holy Maiden is coming, this is the supreme glory of the Silver Tide City, in order to pay homage to the glory of the Great Heavenly Song Holy Maiden, I have been waiting with the citizens for a morning!"
"Praise the Lord, praise the great Celestial Song Holy Maiden!"
The battle nuns stood solemnly, raising their swords in praise of their Lord and the angel.
Obviously, Karl's words won the favor of the two battle nuns, one of whom said: "Wait here, no idle people are allowed to enter the monastery, and the scribe must be guided and supervised by the nurturing grandmother to enter the vestibule, and it is strictly forbidden to walk around without permission." β
Karl didn't see exactly how the two battle nuns had informed the others, but in a few moments an old nun stepped out of the tall doorway of the convent.
The old lady was not tall, slightly rickety, half of her body was wrapped in a strict nun shawl, her expression was serious, and there was no expression at all.
"You're the new scribe?"
Seeing Carl, the old lady's eyes couldn't help but sharpen, she looked carefully, her eyes were like a sharp sword, almost piercing Carl!
"Yes!"
The old mama's eyes were sharp and a little scary, but Carl still stiffened his head and calmly faced the old mama's scrutinizing gaze: "I just came to the Silver Tide City from out of town and urgently need a job, and Daddy John from the copper kettle bar introduced me here." β
Carl's explanation softened the old lady's gaze a little, and she didn't say anything, just turned around and said, "Come with me!"
Karl hurriedly followed, looking at the famous women's monastery as he went.
As the largest monastery in the City of Silver Tide, and second only to the Convent of the Holy Lady in the Radiant Church, this monastery has a clear architectural style from the Dawn War. The tall, heavy, mountain-like walls, and the towers, which are tall and thin and like spears, all have a strong practical style of war.
In addition to the daily practice of the monks, the monks also had the duties of clearing out the hidden monsters and dark creatures in the mountains, sheltering civilians to reclaim wasteland, expanding human living space, receiving passing tourists, and maintaining the safety of trade routes, which were of great strategic significance.
As a result, these early monasteries were often small fortresses, fully functional market towns. The same is true of the Abbey of Saint-Sullamel, with its thick walls and majestic castle, its stables, barns, and warehouses attached to it, as well as inns for travelers, hospitals for the sick, orphanages for orphans, schools for students, and so on.
However, the Abbey of Saint-Sullamel, as a purely women's monastery, denied access to all men and only to female visitors.
Scribes like Karl worked for the monastery, and their area of activity was limited to the colonnaded square between the first rampart and the second.
Karl followed the old lady through the long torch-burning doorway to a Romanesque plaza flanked by tall marble columns and a corridor of towering covered bridges, ending in a narrow gatehouse and walls with towering spires in the Gothic styleβa mixture of Romanesque and Gothic style, and an early architectural style of the Dawning Wars.
Book copying is a job that requires good lighting and a quiet environment, and the dark and narrow castle of the Gothic style is definitely not suitable for a copying room.
Therefore, the place of work of the scribes was arranged in the doorways of the covered bridges on both sides of the square, as well as the arched doorways dug behind the city walls.
"The work of a scribe begins with the first rays of the sun in the morning and ends with the setting of the sun in the evening. β
"The scribe must complete the copying of thirty manuscripts every day, without alteration or error, and if he is insufficient, he shall be paid five copper for every page of manuscript missing!"
"The scribe must be quiet, only in his own copy room, not to move, not to make noise, and if you need to go to the toilet, please apply to the nurturing grandmother first!"
"Every day at noon, when the bell at the top of the cathedral points to twelve, there is half an hour for lunch, so please eat as soon as possible!"
"As a bonus, at the end of each day's work, you can go to the small library on the left side to read the books for a while, but you must leave before dark, you can choose to pick a book and bring it back, but you must ensure that the book is intact, and if you lose a book, you need to copy three copies again, or you will be fined five gold tales, missing pages, and the damage will be compensated according to different prices!"
The old lady walked with Carl to the copying room, and with a blank face repeated the rules that the scribe had to follow.
Carl listened to the old woman's lecture and looked at the environment in which he was about to start.
There were quite a few scribes working here, some of them in the arched bridges behind the marble columns, some in the doorways below the city walls, and the whole work was quiet, except for the rustling of quill tips scratching through parchment scrolls, and the occasional coughing.
The scribes at the desks, some of them were writing hard at their desks, some were biting the tip of their quill pens and pondering, some seemed to have just copied the wrong words and were impatiently scribbling out the wrong words, some seemed to have seen some wonderful article and were reading with relish, and some seemed to be too tired and dozing off with their heads propped up......
Such a scene made Carl can't help but feel a little familiar, and it feels like returning to the junior high school examination room of the year.
"Scribes are only allowed to move in the copying area, and are never allowed to go to other areas, and if they violate, they will be expelled completely, and they will never be hired by the monastery again. β
The old lady said that Karl led a doorway under the city wall and made a final stern warning: "This seat has already changed three masters in a month because of the violation of this rule, I hope you will take this as a warning and not repeat their mistakes!"
