Appendix 5: Lockerbie air disaster, the United States and Britain disputes

On 20 August 2009, the Scottish judicial authorities stated that the Lockerbie air crash creator McGrahi had been granted an early end to his sentence in Scotland and returned to China in view of his terminal prostate cancer. That evening, Megrahi returned to Libya and was warmly welcomed by the local population. The release of Al-McGrahi aroused strong dissatisfaction among the US government and the public. Many dignitaries, including President Ma, have spoken out against the UK, and some Americans have called on all compatriots to refuse to travel to Scotland and boycott British goods such as Scotch whisky.
