Chapter 313: The Gallows
The ship slowly sailed into Campden Park, a small town on the outskirts of Kingston, the capital of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, where the container port is located.
In the night, I saw a flickering light in front of me.
"Finally...... It's time to land. York shouted excitedly.
"Brother Qian, do you know which country was the first person to set foot on this island hundreds of years ago?" York then asked.
"Spaniards?" I replied.
York immediately shook his head.
"British? Dutch? I asked.
"Hahaha...... No, the first to set foot in this land of Caribbeans were the French! York laughed, his face full of pride.
"You Frenchman, you are so proud to occupy other people's places and plunder other people's resources, and you are so complacent!" I gave him a blank look.
"Hahaha! Big brother, this is history, it's my business, don't talk about me! I'm ignoring that, I've read about it in books anyway......" York laughed.
"But if that's the case, it's great that a lot of people in the island nation speak French......" York continued.
"You've only been here for a short time, it seems like it's all British!" I laughed.
"Oh, don't worry about it, it's okay to be developed and prosperous anyway." York said with a laugh.
I understood what he meant and glared at him.
The big ship slowly approached, and after it came to a stop, it began to unload.
I stared at the brightly lit harbor and the distant mountains of the island, and my heart was thrilled - oh my God, after all the hardships, I finally came to this place!
Looking back on the bits and pieces of this time - it was so hard!
……
Back in the room, I packed everything and walked out.
When I saw the white-haired captain, he shook my hand very warmly and said in blunt Chinese: Sir, take care! Have a great trip!
I hugged him very affectionately and said a lot of thank you to him for saving us both. As I was leaving, I looked him in the eye again and whispered, "Captain...... The grace of dripping water, should be repaid with a spring, I will definitely repay you for saving your life! ”
Although he didn't understand, I saw a warm current in his eyes.
Johnson led us slowly down the side of the ship.
"Follow me, I'm familiar with the customs officers here......" Johnson said as he walked.
"That's great. Thank you, Johnson. "I handed him my passport and documents.
"We were originally on a French freighter, but because of an accident, now it is changed to your ship, and when we go out of customs, those customs officers will not make things difficult for us, right?" I then asked.
"Don't worry, I have a solution. Those customs people are all my buddies, it's too small here, just treat them to a meal later...... Hee-hee. Johnson replied with a smile.
"York, remember to tell your old captain that you're safe when you get out of customs. I don't know why, you're always reluctant to call them these days on the ship? Johnson suddenly turned back to York.
"Okay, don't worry, I'll definitely fight. Actually, I want to...... Give them a surprise. York replied aloud.
"And what about your family in France? It's time to say something. Johnson gave him a look of disbelief.
"Alas......" York stopped suddenly, as if there was something unspeakable.
yes, after all these days together, I didn't ask about his family—no wonder Johnson felt weird.
Just as we were thinking, we arrived at the customs checkpoint. The checkpoint is a bit rudimentary, just a glass house, and it still looks a little cozy, not at all like a government customs agency. There were only two blacks on duty at the front desk, and there wasn't even a guard at the door.
Johnson was really good, and after talking to the two black men, they immediately stamped our documents and got out of the country.
As soon as we came out, we saw a Mercedes Benz van parked at the door. I thought to myself, it can't be sent by the chieftain, right?
Sure enough, "Hey! Johnson waved to the driver and led us into the car.
The driver with the cap chatted with Johnson and nodded politely to us.
"This is the chief's driver, he has been waiting for us here for more than an hour. Now let's go to the chief's house for dinner! Have a drink! Johnson said happily.
"Don't worry, we're good friends, and the chief is very hospitable!" Johnson patted me on the shoulder.
Cars are speeding through this strange city, and the nearby sea is alive against the street lights. It was estimated to be a suburb, and twenty minutes later, we saw a bustling streetscape.
"Ahead is the most famous botanical garden here!" Johnson pointed ahead.
I looked at it, and it was just an arch and next to it there were some old Roman column-like buildings, nothing special.
"I've been to see it before, it's a big botanical garden, lots and lots of unknown flowers and trees......" York nodded.
"In this land, the first to establish settlements were the French...... The St. Vincent's Botanical Garden, founded in 1765, is the oldest botanical garden in the Western Hemisphere. In 1793, Captain William Bligh, better known for the mutiny of the Bounty, brought the seeds of the bread tree here and planted them...... There are a lot of interesting historical stories in it...... Some of them have even been made into movies! Johnson exclaimed.
A little further on, I saw a castle-like building on the hill in front of me appear at the bend, which looked very majestic in the night, presumably a former military fortress.
"There's Berkshire Hill in front, and there's Fort Charlotte on top, and you can go and see it tomorrow, and you can see the whole of Kingston from there." York said.
"Yes, this fort must be hundreds of years old, it seems to be named after the wife of King George III of England. I've heard the chieftain say that in its heyday, the fort was able to station 600 soldiers and deploy 34 guns, which is pretty awesome! Johnson said with a smile.
I nodded, looking at the gloomy wall outside the fortress, and my heart tightened for a while—this Qin Lingjin couldn't live in the fortress, right? This impregnable place is easy to defend and difficult to attack......
"It was a major fortress in St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the early 19th century to protect the port. In the event of a clash with the French army, the British garrison was stationed here and waited for reinforcements from the Royal Navy from the other islands. The French invasion of St. Vincent in 1779 by landing from Calliaqua, south of Kingston, made the British aware that a potential attack could come from all directions on the island, not just a direct take of Kingston...... Therefore, the fort was also equipped with artillery towards the inland areas. Johnson continued.
"Oh, is the fort still in use now? I think there are some villas up there. I asked.
"Some of the old barracks in the fort are now used as museums, and the walls record the rich history of the people of Kaliforna." Johnson replied.
"Those buildings next to them aren't villas! Brother Qian, guess what? However, if you guess it a hundred times, you won't guess either! Johnson laughed.
"What is it? In that case, I don't guess...... Johnson, just tell me, don't waste so many of my brain cells. I laughed too.
"That's ...... The execution ground of the gallows. Johnson said with a smile.
"Huh?" York and I both shouted out.
"Yes, St. Vincent is still a country where the death penalty is required by law." Johnson nodded.
When I heard this, I chuckled inwardly.
