The so-called "woodblock watermark" is actually a color overprinting technique that prevailed in the middle and late Ming Dynasty. It is commonly known as "Gonghua Plate". Although the ancients had color engravings for a long time, before the Ming Dynasty, they mostly painted various colors on the same engraving. For example, the paper money "Jiaozi" of the Song Dynasty is two colors. However, this technique is only suitable for simple paintings, which are slightly more complex and have more colors, and will form a state of deinking or dyeing. Therefore, the color books on the market are almost invisible.

At first, the "engraving" was only used for the title page illustration of the novel. The technique of printing on paper with engraving is called "arch flower", which is mostly used for poetry. Although the flower paper in the Tang Dynasty has color, but there is no poetry and painting sketch as the background, after the invention of the arch flower technology, it opened a new door for the paper. All kinds of exquisite, elegant and interesting poems and paintings began to appear on the notepaper, adding a vivid and beautiful touch to the paper.

In the middle and late Ming Dynasty, folk novels prevailed, engraving technology developed rapidly, and excellent works of text and painting continued. The arch flowers of the plate are naturally integrated, and since then: as soon as the golden wind and jade dew meet, they will win countless in the world!

Later generations felt that the name "Gonghua Engraving" was too jerky and professional, so they changed it to an elegant name with Jiangnan charm: woodblock watermark.

Clever craftsmen divide a painting into several pieces according to the color system, engrave and color them separately, and finally combine them to form a single painting. The problem of color is perfectly solved.

Xu Danling once took over a large project. Use woodblock watermarks to reproduce the famous painting "Hairpin Lady". From paper selection, paper dyeing, aging, pigment selection, color mixing, copying the original, splitting the print, engraving to the final coloring, it took nearly a year! The imitation of the painting can be fake! When the drawing is completed, the market price is open to six figures!

Xu Danling also relied on this painting to become famous, and established his position in the industry in one fell swoop.

Before the crossing, he was obviously in the Forbidden City, and was invited by the director of the Palace Museum to consult the Ming Dynasty painter Yan Zong's work "Pictures of Lakes and Mountains and Pingyuan".

The Picture Scroll of Lakes and Mountains was originally in the collection of the Guangdong Museum, but because it is too old, it will inevitably be damaged under careful storage, and it is really not suitable for exhibition. But the curator did not want to replace it with a rough imitation, and after thinking twice, he decided to send the painting to Beijing and asked Rong Bao Zhai to try to reproduce the painting with a traditional woodblock watermark.

Rong Bao Zhai's ability to reproduce the ancient texts has shocked the whole country since the Republic of China. They copied Qi Baishi's paintings, and even Qi Baishi himself laughed and couldn't tell the real from the fake! This time, the elite of Rong Bao Zhai poured out of the nest, and Xu Danling served as the team leader to coordinate the formation.

When he first saw "Pictures of Lakes and Mountains in the Distance", a strange feeling rose in his heart.

The painting in front of me was less than two feet long and nearly a foot wide. It depicts the northern river valleys, mountains, and interconnected wilderness.
