In 1955, the young volunteers of the Shanghai Communist Youth League arrived in De'an County, Jiangxi Province, to reclaim wasteland in Miliangpu Tuogou Ridge, Poyang Lake, and the southern foot of Lushan Mountain, and established the "Communist Youth Society" in the same year.

In 1957, De'an County sent some cadres to Jinhu Township to set up a reclamation farm, and the cadres took the lead in merging the "Gongqing Society" and Jinhu Farm into the De'an state-owned "Gongqing Comprehensive Reclamation Farm", with the headquarters in Jinhu. All the staff of the Communist Youth Society moved to the site.

In 1969, De'an County implemented the separation of the field and moved the headquarters of the "Gongqing Comprehensive Reclamation Farm" from Jinhu to Nanhu. The division continues to develop in Jinhu in both directions.

In 1984, the "Gongqing Reclamation Farm" was renamed "Gongqingcheng".

In 1992, in order to accelerate the construction of the Changjiu Industrial Corridor, the Jiangxi Provincial Government approved the establishment of the "Gongqingcheng Open Development Zone" in Jiangxi Province.

In 1994, the Jiangxi Provincial Government approved the establishment of the Jiangxi Gongqing Taiwanese Investment Zone.

In 2016, Gongqing City officially took over Sujiadang Township and Zequan Township.
