Chapter 9 The First Encounter with the Bone Rub
In the fall of 2014, I was in the store by myself, and Master went out to collect the goods. There was a middle-aged Tibetan man in the store, I don't know what his name was, but he had come to deliver the goods a few times before, and the master was there at that time, he looked at the price of the goods, according to the master, these deliveries are often mixed with the old and the new, and the prices are reported according to the old goods, which depends on the eyesight, if you can't eat the new and old goods, it is easy to take medicine.
I called the master, he said that he would come back in a while, taking advantage of this vacancy, the delivery of the eldest brother took out some goods, a few beads, a bronze gilt small inch Buddha, and a few rubbing (Tibetan demoulding clay sculptures, with clay filled in the mold, to make clay Buddha statues, do not understand Baidu), a few Duoji (vajra), I don't know much about the industry, but I have the opportunity to get started or each one carefully looked at it.
These goods are nothing special, I can't understand the gilded inch Buddha, but Rub and Dorjee should be old, and the beads are not interested in it, so I didn't look at it.
There is a rub is very special, the feel is obviously lighter than the ordinary mud rubbing, it should be mixed with other substances with low density in the mud, and the subject matter is also rare, it is a double corpse Tuolin Lord.
Because I don't understand, I don't dare to ask for a bargain, this line of rules, if you don't want it, it's best not to ask. Moreover, many shippers run trains with their mouths, often Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, open and close their mouths Ali, Kadampa, and old years, and swear to the light bulb that "tribute is loose" (the Three Treasures of Buddhism, Dharma and Sangha), in fact, they are all for business, and not every shipper's story can be believed.
Then the master came back, looked at the goods, and negotiated the price. I can hear from the conversation between Master and the owner of the goods, Master thinks that these goods are good, and if you want to make a deal, generally speaking, the price of a pass will be lower, but if you pick a certain piece alone, the price will not be discounted.
After the owner left, the master picked up the rubbing of the two-body corpse and looked at it, and carefully observed it with a magnifying glass with a strong flashlight.
After a few minutes, he said to me, "Look at this chacha." ”
I also followed Master's example, picked up a magnifying glass and looked at it, and under the ten-fold magnifying glass, I could see the special features of this rub. This rubbing under the magnifying glass shows that you can clearly see the unevenness, and that kind of layering, I don't need to be prompted by the master, I know that it must be caused by the material, that is, on the basis of the original ordinary clay, mixed with other materials.
I know that the mixed material is another material that is different from the earth, it is less dense, and it contains a lot more, so the texture of this rubbing is significantly lighter. But as for what kind of material is mixed in, I don't know.
At that time, although I had not been in the industry for a long time, I also had a lot of contact with wipes, and generally speaking, in addition to the most common ordinary mud wipes, there were also high-level wipes such as famous wipes, medicated wipes, and cloth wipes.
The so-called name cha refers to the special identity of the person who made this chacha, and most of them are eminent monks, such as the Da, Lai, Pan, Zen, Karmapa, Zhangjia and other great powers in a certain world.
This kind of rub will have a powerful exclusive seal on the back or bottom, and others cannot use it.
This includes the Norbulingka series (the thirteenth Da, Lai Lama's personal system, the subject matter of rubbing is not much, there are a limited number of longevity three, Ji Ji Mahei, etc., the back of the bowl has his gold seal, it is recorded that it was made in 1916, specifically refer to the book "Norbulingka Collection of Cultural Relics"), Ban Qing Zhun Dui (class, Zen pro-system of rubbing, according to Wang Xiandi's research, from the first class, Zen to the tenth class, Zen have been produced, but there are many doubts behind this statement, because in the early days, especially the first three classes, Zen are posthumously recognized, There is no record of the production of Ban Qing's literature, and the most likely explanation is that the ten Ban Qing Zhun Piles found earlier are all made by the 10th Panchen Lama and the earlier successive Ban and Chan Lamas, but they cannot be compared one by one, and it is possible that a certain Ban and Zen made several models. Interested friends on their own, Baidu, looking for Wang Xiandi's posts in the Shengshi Collection), etc.;
The so-called medicinal rub refers to the addition of Tibetan medicine when making rubbing, the common is to add manna pills, of course, there are some other Tibetan medicines added, I am not particularly clear about what specific medicinal materials, this rubbing is characterized by small density, light feel, the surface can be seen manna pills and other medicinal material structure, medicine rubbing is generally not particularly clear, because of the material, some medicinal rubs can see obvious traces of taking medicine;
The so-called cloth rub, there is a clear record is that the tenth class, after the death of the Zen master, by the high monks of Tashilhunpo Monastery, with a variety of precious medicinal materials to deal with the class, Zen body, the obtained body fluids mixed with clay to make a rub, the subject matter is not much, Yama enemy, Tsongkhapa, Shakyamuni, White Tara and other limited kinds, this kind of cloth rub has a characteristic, rub shows that you can see obvious crystalline salt, the weight is no different from ordinary rubbing.
Of course, the above is somewhat general, many times, it is very common for a rub to be both a medicinal rub and a famous rub, not so classified, just to explain these kinds of high-grade rubbing.
At that time, the feeling that the rub gave me did not belong to any of the above. After I finished observing, I compared my knowledge reserves, and I didn't find a similar attribution. So I asked Master, "Master, what kind of chacha is this chacha, and why have you never seen it before?" ”
Master looked at me and said with some excitement, "If you read it right, this should be a bone rub." Keep it away, this bone rub may ......" Master lengthened his tone again, I had been waiting for him to continue, but he shook his head and said, "Let it be." ”
"Bone rub?" I was at a loss, I had never heard of this term before.
As far as I know, there is no such bone rub in the classification of rubbing. To put it simply, Tibet is divided into regions, basically Ali Chacha, Houzang Chacha, Lhasa Chacha, and Eastern Tibetan Chacha; In terms of use, it is the tower Tibetan cha and the temple for the cha (the temple for the cha includes the cha for the Buddhist hall in the homes of ordinary believers); In terms of level, it is a general rub, a famous rub, a medicine rub, a cloth rub, etc., and I have never heard of a bone rub.
Later, I consulted the information and found some records sporadically: the bone rub is generally made by mixing his ashes with soil after the death of the great monk, in order to promote the teachings of "Bodhisattva generosity, sparing life", some similar to the Buddha cutting meat to feed the eagle, Tantric Gabala production, etc.
I was also very excited when I heard Master say it was a bone rub, and an antique dealer and Tibetan enthusiast had this reaction when he first saw an old object that he had never seen before.
Judging from the appearance of this bone rub, the quality is very good, there is no defect, there is no trace of taking medicine, the template is very clear, the subject matter is a rare double corpse Tuolin Lord, and a layer of pulp has been formed outside, which is formed by long-term incense offerings.
My judgment is that this bone rub should be a product of the middle of the Qing Dynasty or earlier, and it has been enshrined for a long time later, and it belongs to the temple for the old rub, a rare old object.
Then Master left beforehand, leaving me alone in the store. I started taking pictures of the bone erase using a Canon 6D, 100mm macro lens.
In fact, I haven't learned photography, let alone shooting macro, just explore it myself, compare some tutorials on the Internet, take a few more photos for backup, and then use PS to simply process the light and color, try to restore the real thing, and then take out the artistic conception, which is enough for antique photos.
After taking photos and processing them, open the Shengshi Collection Forum as usual (the forum is the most professional forum in terms of statues in China, and the M moderators of the statue section and the moderators of Qiangba Tibetan Buddha are all big names in the study of ancient statue art in China), and upload the bone rubbing photos you just received for Tibetan friends to comment and enjoy.
