Chapter 25: The Final Stronghold
Flames swept and smoke billowed out. The black armor suddenly struck out of the dense forest, like a thunderbolt piercing Straker's secret facility.
The base's automatic defense mechanism was quickly activated, and the unmanned turrets rose one after another, and the black projectiles roared under the dazzling artillery fire, and the dust several meters high made such splashes one after another, and the ground was full of potholes in a blink of an eye. The metal cannonballs pierced through the trunks of the trees one by one, and the towering giant trees dozens of meters high fell to the ground with a clatter.
Less than a minute had passed since the first cannon shots of the battle, and the area had already been blown up beyond recognition by a variety of powerful thermal weapons.
Michael maneuvered his suit sideways through the gap between the two stray bullets, while locking on to the location of each turret that fired at him with the help of the artificial intelligence Shirley. A few small missiles whizzed out of his suit's shoulders with long plumes of smoke, and with a few deafening explosions, the unmanned turrets were reduced to smoking scrap metal.
"Sir, an assault team is approaching from the southeast." Shirley reminded, "The scan results show that they have two laser tanks, and twelve others are equipped with exoskeleton power equipment and energy weapons. β
Hydra's energy weapon technology originated during World War II. At that time, the founder of Hydra, Red Skull, briefly held the Cosmic Rubik's Cube, and Hydra scientists developed a series of energy weapons through the study of its endless special energy, which was once a nightmare for the Allies.
Although the Cosmic Cube is no longer in the hands of Hydra, the weapon technology derived from it has been retained, and after so many years of research and transformation of generations of elite scientists of Hydra, it has been further improved, and it is not a problem to penetrate the steel armor and penetrate the tank.
Unfortunately, it was not enough to help them defeat this lone invader.
The two sides had barely exchanged hands when the well-armed Hydra was torn apart by the sonic cannon. The Hydra soldiers, who were scattered in formation, still trying to form an encirclement, raised their guns and fired high-energy beams at the floating armor, but most of them were dodged by the opponent's nimble use of high mobility.
The thrusters on Michael's back erupted with fire, and the pulse beams of his palms poured out continuously, and in the blink of an eye, most of the attacking team was already dead and wounded. The two laser tanks easily seized the opportunity to lock on to his figure, and the laser shelling sprayed away like a rushing torrent, only to be blocked by him casually drawing a circle. The high-density laser light slammed into the flame-colored magical barrier with all its might, but at best it splashed a few sparks.
Michael's right arm lifted, and a slender red laser beam shot out from the gauntlet. With a sweep of his cross arm, the laser beam sliced sideways like a silent blade of iron, slicing through the armor of the laser tank along a red-hot cut mark.
Baron Straker watched the battle outside from the screen in the control center, his face gloomy as if he was about to drip water.
Again, the "Black Knight", Dr. Angus Nortonβif the previous guess was correct. But where did his information come from? Not only was it the location of those top-secret Hydra backup bases, but at this moment he even chased all the way to the door of Straker's personal secret stronghold.
Could he have predicted whether he would be a prophet or not? Could it be that in the three years since Norton disappeared, what adventures and psychic powers have he acquired?
Such an idea, while absurd, seems to be the only plausible explanation. Norton can read minds, so he can always be one step ahead of them, and no matter where they are hiding or what plans they have, they will be seen through and acted on first, so they really have no chance of winning.
No, it's not hopeless. Mind reading or not, Norton was now at the door of their base. That means this is also the best chance for Straker's side, as long as they can kill Norton here once and for all, they will remove the biggest obstacle to a comeback in the future. In that case, his ambition to rebuild Hydra and reign over the world is still not impossible.
Thinking of this, Baron Straker's mind came alive again. He asked aloud a headphone-wearing correspondent next to him, "Where has he broken through now?" β
"The first two lines of defense have been breached!" The correspondent sweated profusely and replied, "Captain Middleton's troops have thirty seconds left to make contact with each other!" β
Middleton's squad was also one of Straker's most elite forces, they were well-armed and well-trained, and they should be able to delay for a few minutes if pulled properly. Straker calculated in his heart, and then turned to Ivan Vanke behind him: "How long will it take for that armor to be activated?" β
"Ten minutes should be enough." The Russian strong man replied.
"Prepare now." Straker ordered, his eyes returning to the screen, "Turn off all other functions in the facility for me, and charge all the energy into the shield for me." β
"Sir," the old man in the white coat stepped forward and whispered in his ear, "perhaps we should consider sending twins. β
"No, they're not ready." Straker said coldly, "It's not time yet, my people can hold out long enough." β
***
Baron Straker's facility is indeed much more technologically advanced than the other Hydra bases, and it took a little more effort to break through the outer line of defense than Michael had originally expected, but there were no surprises in the end.
The last group of Hydra who tried to intercept were also wiped out by the powerful fire of the armor, and Michael sped towards the building that was hiding behind. He raised his hand to strike two pulsed beams when he was less than twenty meters away, but the shockwave violently slammed into an invisible barrier, causing ripples of light blue on the outside of the building.
Michael reversed course, his sprinting figure suddenly elevated, and the thrusters spewed downward flames to hold him in mid-air.
"Shirley, do you see that?"
"See, sir." The AI replied crisply, "An energy shield protects the outer layer of the building, and the pulse cannon is ineffective. β
"It's like a turtle cowering in its shell, but Straker can't shrink for the rest of his life." Michael moved around the perimeter of the shield, "Scan the shield's energy efficiency to analyze how strong it is, and tell me how hard it is." β
"The shield is designed to balance its own energy in the event of a hit, and will continue to patch itself as long as it has not run out of energy, unless it inflicts a large area of damage that is beyond its range at once." Shirley quickly gave an analysis, "It may be difficult to break through with conventional weapons equipped with applied armor. But I can scan particle fluctuations and analyze the source of shield generation. As soon as the generator is destroyed by concentrated fire, the shield will be disarmed. Do I need to do this? β
"No, that's time-consuming." "I prefer to save time and effort. β
He took a deep breath, his palms interlaced, and the palm part of his armor immediately spit out two dark green magic circles. He hung in the air, closed his eyelids slightly, and began to chant incantations in a low voice.

"Sir, he's stopped." A communicator in the control room reported as he zoomed out the screen to show the image of the black armor hovering above the shroud.
Straker sneered, "He must have realized that the shield couldn't be easily breached. There's no way he's going to crack the shield in the few minutes he has left, he's definitely scanning the power source that generated the shield right now, and we can take advantage of this opportunity......"
"Sir......" The other communicator sitting next to him turned pale and pointed to his screen like a frightened child, "You may ...... Gotta see this ......."
Baron Straker looked in the direction he was pointing.
The sunlight from the forest was obscured at some point, and dark clouds silently accumulated over the base. Lead-colored clouds swirled slowly overhead the building, unseen forces manipulating the air currents to create a spiraling black vortex at the base of the clouds.
In the midst of that whirlpool, light shot out like arrows.
Baron Straker was dumbfounded.
The clouds were lifted and white light fell. The dazzling paths of light were intricately intertwined, and the strokes clearly formed a huge magical enchantment, like a palm covering the entire building protected in the turtle shell, and the momentum was overwhelming.
