Chapter 16: The Opposite Side of the Door
Unknown teleportation channel. "How long have we been now, Rey?" Blake asked, tapping his left index finger on the strap of his backpack. "Less than five minutes." As he walked, Rey raised his left hand and looked at a device that looked like a round electronic watch on his left wrist, and replied, "What's the matter?" "Nope." Blake replied immediately, twitching the corners of his mouth slightly. Time seemed to slow down, as Blake always felt like they had been gone for at least ten minutes — a bit of a difference, and Blake didn't want Rey to know that he seemed to be "impatient". Blake felt like he heard his own heartbeat – from his own throat.
This passage was wider than the one they had teleported to Lab Nine, and the main body emitted a faint blue glow. Silver-blue and silvery-white bands of light flowed around them, twisting, tangled, and scattered in all directions, emitting a somewhat blinding light and a "whooshing" sound. The huge silvery-white aura that surrounded the tunnel flashed from back to front with a "buzzing" sound every once in a while, bringing bursts of ripples. A closer look at the inner walls of the teleportation channel reveals their reflections. With each step Rey and Blake take, a circular ripple circle appears where they walk – dissipating completely after three seconds.
"The exact location of Lab 9...... Are you making any progress now? After another five minutes, Blake asked slowly, in an unconcerned tone. Kindness...... We used all the detection instruments, we used all the methods...... But......" Ray paused, and continued—in a low voice, but Blake heard clearly, "not even a single instrument...... Or the combination, the method...... I got those protective walls. "But......" Rey said immediately, "our lab...... You know, the Byron's lab is working on a new detection instrument. "Oh?" Blake raised an eyebrow on his right and asked a word.
Rey inadvertently curled the corners of his mouth and explained, "A new way of thinking, a new approach." Because we feel that since the existing detection instruments have nothing to do with those protective walls, then ...... The people who built those walls must have considered all the detection technology that existed. "It's easy to think." Blake said immediately. Then, he froze for a moment and frowned. Rey didn't pay attention to Blake's frowning brow, smiled, wiped his bangs with his right hand, squinted slightly, and replied, "Yes, you're right." But I don't know why, I only thought of it recently. "Yes......" Blake asked calmly, as if it had nothing to do with him. Ah, I guess I thought it was complicated before. Rey shrugged his shoulders and said with a smile, "I always feel like it shouldn't be this simple!" ”
"The new research isn't easy, right?" Blake said, turning his head to look at the walls of the teleportation channel, as if interested in the flowing bands of light. "Who knows......" Rey replied with a sly smile, "maybe it could be easier." "Listen to your tone...... You seem to be confident. Blake said slowly, tugging at the corners of his mouth slightly. However, Rey did not answer directly this time. He raised his right eyebrow and asked, "What about that?" Don't have confidence? "......" This time, Blake didn't reply. The two walked in silence, one with a faint smile and the other with a tense face.
Ten minutes later...... "It's almost there." Rey said as he looked at the silver-white circular light gate twenty meters in front of him. Let's go, my eyes still see clearly. Blake replied. He took a big stride, overtook Rey, and walked ahead. "......" was choked by Blake, and Rey didn't want to say anything more. He silently followed Blake, squinting slightly. Rey didn't think there was anything to complain about, after all, they'd been together for so long—and that's what Blake is. He didn't want to worry about it at all, because if Blake respectfully invited him in one day, he would think that Blake needed to go to the medical cabin to get some effective fever reducers.
Then, one after the other, the two stepped out of the silver-white light gate. There was a blinding light shining behind them—but they didn't need it to see what was in front of them. What greeted them was a straight hallway, the same style as the one they had entered, but spotless. The long strips of white light at the top of the hallway on either side glowed coldly, and at the end of the metal floor and wall hallway was a fork in the road that turned at 90 degrees. It was eerily quiet, but nothing was wrong.
"It looks normal here." Blake said, breaking the silence first. "It's so normal...... This is the biggest abnormality. Rey whispered, "I even think there's people living here." "The key question is...... There's still energy here. Blake said, narrowing his eyes, "Is there renewable energy here?" I don't think you're going to be able to put all the energy you need for so many years in the same place. "I don't know." Rey looked around, shrugged his shoulders, and replied, "There's no mention of research projects on this technology in the available sources. "Oh? You're a waste. Blake turned his head to the wall, rolled his eyes, and said.
Blake knew that this was not the time to struggle with the question of whether the ancient Helkas were wasting energy, but he didn't know why—surprisingly, he didn't want to hold back. "Yes, indeed." Rey said lightly, twitching the corners of his mouth, "I can't refute this fact. "Uh......" Blake uttered a syllable, not knowing what to say next. Realizing that Rey was a little embarrassed, he began to regret it a little. Blake knew very well: although Rey was the patron saint of Helka, he didn't know much more about ancient Helka than he did. "I'm sorry I didn't stop this tragedy." Rey took a deep breath and continued, "If only I had found out about this place sooner. "This ......," Blake suddenly remembered that Rey had never seen the Byron fleet of the ancient Helka Star before.
"I think we should move forward." Rey said, changing the subject. "Indeed, there is only one corridor to be seen here." Blake said, taking the lead in the first step. He suddenly had a feeling that was very similar to "I can't go on stage because I'm ashamed", but Rey gave him a step. "Wait, there's plenty of energy here, be careful with precautions!" Rey hurriedly called out to Blake. "The portal we walked through is not a wall, where is the protective measure?" Blake said in a disapproving tone, but stopped anyway. He tilted his head slightly to look at Rey and said, "I think this should be what your group of experimenters call 'normal operation', right?" ”
"That portal is a hidden portal, and we're not sure if we're going to do anything about it before we get here." Rey immediately explained, "It's better to turn on the energy protection first, it's safer." "But don't you have the technology to monitor the protection of elven energy? I remember someone saying that your laser rays wouldn't have a problem penetrating a high-level elf's energy protection. Blake said with some disapproval, "You're throwing yourself into a trap by doing this." Rey frowned, then said slowly, "So what do you mean...... Just walk over? ”
"I'm ......," Blake said, stopping abruptly. At the same time, Rey suddenly held his breath. Blake looked at Rey, just in time for the way Rey looked at him. Something is coming! Blake narrowed his eyes. You are on your left, I am on my right. Reibi gestures. Kindness. Blake nodded slightly in agreement. Blake counted his heartbeats one by one, and Rey felt his heart go to his throat - both of them tensed their nerves, but neither of them gathered energy. They all felt a little nervous – perhaps not just "a little nervous" – and although the basic training was never interrupted on weekdays, there was basically no actual combat. Blake knew he must have regressed, but he wasn't sure how much he had regressed.
A minute later, a man walked along the road at the end of the hallway, about thirty-five years old. He has shoulder-length sky-blue curls and sterling silver eyes, wears a knee-length white single-breasted lab coat, hums a song, and holds a metal cup with a square cross-section in his right hand — a drink that looks like black coffee is steaming. He walked over like this, walking briskly, as if Rey and Black had merged with the air around them. Rey thought the melody was familiar, but he couldn't remember it for a moment. But even though the man had walked over, Rey and Blake's heartbeats hadn't slowed down by half a minute. They heard the man's footsteps stop, and then they started again—louder and louder.
