036 Trip to the Rainforest

Gu Fengchun looked at Liu Wensheng's wrinkled face full of fear, and couldn't help but be very nervous, especially wondering what Liu Wensheng had experienced.

The following is Liu Wensheng's recollection, in order to facilitate the description, we temporarily use the first person, and the "I" in it refers to Liu Wensheng.

Beginning on 14 February 1979, a large army group began to attack the invading army in Vietnam, and on 16 March completed the first phase of the military operation. During the march, we were responsible for demining, and when the army retreated, the main task of our engineer company was to lay mines in the rear. And my experience mainly happened when I was marching into the army.

When the troops marched all the way very fast, we engineers had to risk their lives to carry out demining tasks in the war, and I was one of these engineers, at that time the Eastern Front attack on Lang Son was tight, and the troops suffered heavy losses, and it is said that the reconnaissance platoon of our regiment suffered heavy losses and urgently needed personnel replenishment, and our engineer company also suffered heavy losses, and only 11 of the 25 comrades-in-arms of my team were left in just three days after the start of the war.

I was selected from the engineer company to be added to the newly formed reconnaissance platoon, and at first I thought I was literate and could read maps. Later, I learned that our reconnaissance team was not a reconnaissance team in the traditional sense, and that we had a very special task assigned to the 13th Army on the Western Front. There were thirty people in the scout, two of whom had just arrived, one who looked to be in his thirties, and the other who was over sixty. The man in his thirties was named Chen Wenhua, who was said to be a special commissioner of the central government, while the old man in his sixties was a very famous professor at a university, and his name was Ye Pingbo. Ye Pingbo and Chen Wenhua were treated very highly, and it is said that General Xu also treated them differently at that time, and I also entrusted the blessing of these two people to meet General Xu before leaving.

At that time, the war on the Eastern Front was already white-hot, and on March 1, we left Lang Son at night, and that night General Xu Da gave a death order, demanding that after the attack after dawn, there should not be a single building in Lang Son that would not be destroyed, and this order was carried out without compromise by the red-eyed soldiers. After our army defeated the enemy's 308th Division, which was known as the most elite of the enemy, Lang Son was occupied by our army on March 4, and the Vietnamese army had no danger to defend on the Eastern Front. And the engineer company to which I belonged was also lost in those days, and if I had not been transferred out of the engineer company, my fate would have been the same as that of my dead brother. Our group of people on a special mission transferred to the helicopter to Liyunnan, but according to Ye Pingbo's instructions, we quickly marched towards the depths of the rainforest. Except for Ye Pingbo and Chen Wenhua, the rest of the personnel are all selected from each company, and except for me, they can be described as the elites of each team. And this so-called task, apart from these two people, we don't know. Our main thing is to escort these two people to their destination and then escort them back.

Discipline in the army is very strict, and we know that we will never ask what we shouldn't ask. According to Ye Pingbo, we are going to march towards the depths of the rainforest, and the destination is an ancient city ruins. And it had to be there within 5 days. Ye Pingbo said that if you can't arrive on time, the consequences will be very serious.

We are generally not very interested in non-military missions, but they are already valued at a higher level than ordinary military operations. We don't dare to take this lightly. We all know very well that in this rainforest, it seems very peaceful, but in fact we all know that the rainforest hides more killing opportunities than on the battlefield, in addition to all kinds of deadly poisonous snakes, there are countless poisonous insects, blood-sucking leeches, swamps that devour life in an instant, and so on. In addition to this, there was a fear of partisans and mines in Vietnam. Every step we take forward, there is a hidden murderous motive. We can't help but be wary along the way. Although I know that being a soldier is a job of pinning my head to my waist, this feeling will be very relevant on the battlefield.

By the time we reached Yunnan, the battle on the Western Front was nearing its end, and our mission had just begun. In addition to the threat of the natural environment of the rainforest, there are guerrillas lurking in the rainforest and the scattered Vietnamese army, which is nothing, and what we are most worried about is that the Vietnamese occupied the Khmer Rouge at that time, and if their army returns to the east and west, then we go in this direction, and the probability of hitting them is very high.

Ye Pingbo and Chen Wenhua were obviously prepared for this harsh environment, and we were trying to avoid places where there might be Vietnamese troops, but in this way, we also walked deeper into the rainforest.

The first day was uneventful, but the next day, bad luck began to haunt our team.

On the way, Chen Wenhua told our team leader Xiao Zhonghua that the purpose of our march was not to find any ancient city, but to find an ancient tomb, which was the burial place of Shu Pan, the monarch of Anyang State. He explained that the reason why they came here during the war was that after the two had completely fought each other, the possibility of them wanting to enter Vietnam for an investigation was almost zero.

My family is looking at feng shui, and I am particularly sensitive to things like those yin and yang houses, and I am very interested in their words, but I also know that there is fraud in Chen Wenhua's words, Shu Pan was originally the monarch of Shu State, but in the Qin period, Sima mistakenly cut down Shu, Shu people lost the country, Shu Pan tossed and turned, and established Anyang State in northern Vietnam. But later defeated by Zhao Tuo, Shu Pan fled from Vietnam, and I don't know what happened, how could a Shu Pan tomb suddenly appear? Just when I was suspicious, Chen Wenhua looked at me for a while before he asked me, "Are you Liu Wensheng, the son of Company Commander Liu Defu?"

I was very surprised at the time, since my father was classified as a cow ghost and snake god, there was no one to call this unit by name; In those years, life was hard, and his old man couldn't endure the repeated criticism, failed to stand up, and died of illness in the cowshed. When the self-defense counterattack began, the black hat of the bull ghost and snake god on his head had not been taken off. Chen Wenhua looks to be in his thirties, and it is not very likely that he knows my father.

I nodded and said, "You know my father?" ”

Chen Wenhua shook his head and said with a smile: "No, I haven't seen him, but I know your grandfather." "As soon as I heard it, the nameless karmic fire rose, my grandfather played chess with Lord Yama during the Liberation War, didn't Chen Wenhua say this? Did he know my father before he gave birth? At that time, I was about to teach him a lesson, but he said lightly: "Ghost-eyed Lao Liu's feng shui skills are famous all over the world, who doesn't know him?" You should learn a little bit about his craft, right? ”

As soon as I heard it, this ghost-eyed Lao Liu was my grandfather's alias, which was the top hat given to him by the people in the industry, saying that he was like having a yin and yang eye, and he was looking for a thief on the ground, and he was looking for feng shui holes. But as soon as I heard this, my anger subsided, my head shook like a rattle, and I said urgently: "I have already drawn a line with them for this kind of bull, ghost, snake, and god to do the four old things!" "Although the special period has just ended, the residual influence of the special period is still deeply imprinted in my heart. I don't dare admit that I have learned the craft of this hand-me-down; Otherwise, even if I finish this battle alive, I am afraid that when I go back, I will be picked up and criticized by the people.

Chen Wenhua patted me on the shoulder and said softly: "Liu Wensheng, you can deny it, but before you were transferred here, I found out everything clearly. Now you can pretend to be stupid, but when I can use you, your eyes better be bright, I can guarantee that when you go out, you will no longer have to bear anything for the past, you don't have to stay in the army for seven or eight years or be a veteran, when you go out, I can give you a clean identity, and then you will have an unlimited future. With that, he smiled incomprehensibly, and that look made my heart furious. But there was something in his words that made my heart pound.

Chen Wenhua didn't say much, and Ye Pingbo was even more silent. We soldiers know that in this kind of place, it is safest to be quiet.

Chen Wenhua is more vigilant than any of us, and if it weren't for him, I believe I would have ended my life in that swamp. As he passed by the edge of a swamp, he whispered, "Get down." We don't know what happened yet, but the Vietnamese soldiers' gunfire rang out suddenly. It turned out that a small group of scattered Vietnamese troops was resting here, lying in ambush in the swamp, and we were attacked as soon as we appeared. Fortunately, the Vietnamese army also suddenly discovered us and fought in a hurry, otherwise we would have suffered heavy losses.

Xiao Zhonghua said hatefully: "Damn Vietnamese barbarians. Then the guns in their hands were fired at the Vietnamese army, and everyone fought back, and for a while, there was a lot of gunfire in the silent rainforest. Only Ye Pingbo was lying on his stomach and did not dare to move, including Chen Wenhua, who was aiming at the remnants of the Vietnamese army.

But the Vietnamese had a big advantage in numbers, and the weapons were no worse than ours. Ironically, many of the guns they used were used during the Vietnam War to support Vietnam in its counterattack against the U.S. military. Now it's okay to raise a white-eyed wolf to bite you back. Looking at the equipment, we know that they are not scattered soldiers, but troops with rich combat experience. Later, I learned that this remnant was actually a deserter from the elite 316A Division in the Vietnamese army. We've hit a hard head. As soon as we meet, we are at a disadvantage.

Chen Wenhua shouted loudly in a hurry: "Bombard them with mortars." ”

Xiao Weihua suddenly became enlightened, and hurriedly called for manpower to suppress the enemy's firepower, and then unloaded the mortar and loaded the shells. In order to deal with the sudden incident, we also set off with two small local mortars. The firing range is exactly the kind of miniature artillery that is tens to hundreds of meters; The lethality is also amazing. It turned out to be really useful.

The power of the mortar is really terrifying. The two mortars, under the control of gunners Liang Yishan and Ma Xiaojie, picked out the places where the enemy's fire was fierce.

Screams and stumps were scattered everywhere, and Ma Xiaojie fired a cannonball into the swamp, and the mud on the swamp immediately flew in all directions, accompanied by several terrible screams.

A foul smell emanated from the mud. The smell of this smell makes us all feel a little sick to our stomachs. On the battlefield, we have even adapted to the smell of corpses, and now we have eaten with relish when we squat next to corpses and nibble on dry food; But this rancid stench is more disgusting than the stench of corpses. There is a large amount of fallen leaves and other organic matter in the swamp, and biogas is usually produced when it decomposes, but the biogas has absolutely no such stench, at most it is just the smell of rotten eggs. In the dense rainforest, there is no wind or wind, and the stench immediately swept through the area, until decades later, when I remembered the smell, my stomach was still pantothenic.
