Chapter 1: My Past
Everyone has their twilight years, and I am no exception. Now all I can do is sit in the yard every day, admire the flowers, tease the birds, watch my grandchildren play in the yard, and listen to the housekeeper talk about how my children work hard outside.
As the days go by, I occasionally make an appointment with a few fox friends who have been on the knife mountain and under the sea of fire, and look back on the exciting days when I was young. One of my grandchildren's favorite thing is to take me, an old man, and let me tell them stories all day.
Sometimes I wonder if I should put together our stories with those old friends and make a book so that our children and grandchildren will know how high they were when they were younger.
The winter in Lincheng is getting colder and colder. On this cookie-cutter day, I sat in the yard as usual, watching a group of grandchildren frolicking, "It's so nice to be young! I think about how many cold winter days I used to run around with those old guys day and night. Now that I'm older, I don't have that momentum anymore. This person has to obey the old man! I couldn't help but feel emotional.
"Master, Mr. Zhang outside the door asks to see you." Just as I was thinking about it, the butler whispered in my ear.
"Let him in." I looked at the courtyard and said with a smile.
After the housekeeper bent down and retired, he brought in an old man, who was my brother who had been fighting since I was a teenager - Zhang Yang, and now, like me, has retired to this small place in Lincheng, living a life like a paradise.
"Lao Xiao, I haven't seen you for a few days, you look good, why haven't you returned to heaven yet?" As soon as Zhang Yang finished speaking, he immediately coughed out of breath, and his old face was red. The housekeeper on the side has already seen that no one in this world dares to talk to me like this except for my old buddies, he smiled and bent over to help Zhang Yang.
"Lao Zhang, don't talk so hard if you're not in good health. In case you go out of your way one day, how can you let me explain to your willow branches? I responded with a smile.
Zhang Yang, supported by the butler, sat on the carved wooden chair that had been placed a long time ago. Zhang Yang leaned back in his chair, and the butler stepped aside. After passing the anger, he finally regained his look, played a few haha first, and said with a smile: "Lao Zhang, don't mention my old ladies, who are yelling at me to run here and there all day long, how can I still toss my old bones." It's like you, a few big and small girls are well managed, and I used to be envious to death. ”
"Second sister-in-law, why are you here? I don't even say a word to my little brother. I shouted in the direction of the door.
Zhang Yang was so frightened that he slipped off the chair, sat on the ground, hugged his head and cried: "Jiao'er, I was wrong, I was wrong, I don't dare anymore!" ”
I threw my head back and laughed, I hadn't laughed so happily in a long time. Zhang Yang heard my laughter, put down the hand holding his head, patted his buttocks, sat back in his seat and said, "You bad old man is very bad!" ”
I patted Zhang Yang's shoulder and said, "Lao Zhang, what's the matter, you're here alone, what about them?" ”
Zhang Yang took out the cigarette case that had been flattened in the butt bag, took out one of it, put it in his mouth, sighed and said, "They didn't come, they are still fighting on the front line." ”
I also sighed and said, "Hey, people who are so old, wouldn't it be nice to come back early and enjoy the blessings?" ”
Zhang Yang took a puff of the cigarette that he didn't light and said: "I don't understand, so do those people in my family, don't follow the persuasion, let me go over to help two times in three days, I don't know, I think it's their daughter-in-law." ”
I couldn't stop smiling, no matter how long it has been, chatting with Zhang Yang always brings me a lot of joy. For a moment, none of us spoke, quietly watching the children frolicking in the courtyard and the sound of pretending to smoke.
I asked Zhang Yang for a cigarette, the housekeeper was already standing behind him, hesitated, or stepped forward to light the fire for me, I spit out a puff of cigarette, and said: "Lao Zhang, have you ever thought about writing about our affairs and showing our glorious deeds to our children in the future?" ”
Zhang Yang took a puff of his unlit cigarette, exhaled a cold breath, and did not answer my question, but said: "Lao Xiao, you are not in good health, don't smoke this one after smoking." ”
I smiled and said I understood.
Subsequently, neither of us spoke. I looked at him quietly, and it didn't take long for Zhang Yang to burst into tears. I know that he must have remembered a lot of the past, and every scene at that moment seemed to be replaying in his eyes like a movie. "Hahahahahaha, your yard is too disturbing, the cold is pressing, and my eyes hurt so much, so I'm leaving." Zhang Yang got up and walked out while wiping his tears, and the housekeeper went up to send him out, Zhang Yang raised his hand and said, "Don't send it." The butler silently stepped aside.
I watched Zhang Yang slowly disappear from my eyes, extinguished the cigarette in my hand, stood up with my hands behind my back, and the butler stepped forward to remove my coat from the chair and draped it over me. I glanced at the housekeeper and said, "Steward Li, you go to the study first to help me prepare the pen and paper, and I will come later." The butler replied and walked towards the study.
Then I said to the children playing in the courtyard, "Kids. ”
"Grandpa" and "Grandpa" came with childish voices, chattering around me, I watched them bloom, touched their heads and said, "Children, I'll go back to the room to rest first, and you guys will come back early." ”
One of the younger grandsons pulled the corner of my clothes and said, "Grandpa, grandpa, can you play with us for a while." "I had a start, and the other kids were clamoring for me to stay.
"My old bones can't stand the weather." I smiled and touched their heads, "Go ahead, go play, stay safe." ”
The children ran away again, but the eldest grandson was still standing and looking at me.
"Xiao Nian, why don't you go and play with them?" I smiled and bent down to him.
"Grandpa, what are you going to do, can you bring Xiao Nian with you?" Xiao Nian looked at me expectantly.
I looked at the eldest grandson and said with a smile: "Grandpa is old, it's cold outside, and my body can't stand it, so go back to the house to warm up and rest." ”
Xiao Nian gagged and said: "Grandpa, you lie, I said when I listened to my father's story at night, grandpa is in good health, he takes cold showers all year round, and he has insisted on it for decades!" ”
I was stunned, but I didn't show it, laughed a few times, and started to walk to the study.
I knew that Xiao Nian was still standing there looking at me, and I knew his expression full of doubt, but then he grinned, and a few runs and jumps came to me.
On our way to the study, I was observing this eldest grandson, his innocent eyes revealing a natural fortitude, and his breath at a young age had fluctuated. I silently thought in my heart, "It seems that I still have too little time to contact these children, and I don't know them at all, is it really my own old age?" ”
While I was in a state of flux, we had already walked to the door of the study, "Let's go in." I said to Xiao Nian.
Xiao Nian hummed, followed me, and walked in with me.
"Wow, that's a lot of books. Grandpa, are these books yours? Xiao Nian asked me as he looked at the books on the shelves full of books.
"Yes, these books are accumulated by my grandfather since he was a child. If you are interested, you can check it out often. I said to Xiao Nian with a smile.
"Really? That's great! Dad bought me a lot of books, and I have already read them, and he is very busy, so I have nowhere to find books to read, and I am so bored every day! Xiao Nian took out a copy of "Boxing Tongjian" as he spoke, sat on the ground, and read it.
I was shocked in my heart, and I didn't bother him, I walked to the desk, Steward Li took off my coat for me and hung it aside, I sat on the chair, looked at the paper and pen in front of me, closed my eyes, and fell into deep thought.
Steward Li silently exited the room and closed the door. In the room, one old and one young, one sitting on a chair and the other sitting on the ground, time seemed to stand still.
