Chapter 44: The Tower of Medivan (I)
Following the lead of the correct guide, Clerk Bauer of Dalaran, they got into a spacious four-wheeled carriage.
"Wait a minute," he said to the two with a smile, "we still have a little 'passenger'." β
Before they could ask questions, under the surprised gaze of Jin Shaolan and Finley, as soon as the curtain was lifted, a little gray cat with a black tabby pattern jumped in lightly and jumped on Bauer's lap.
"Oh, dear Trickle, did you have a good time with your old friends yesterday?" The carriage moved slowly, and Bauer affectionately stroked the smooth fur of the black-striped kitten. "I'll introduce you, this is Trickle, my little friend."
Seeing their surprised and excited eyes, he laughed, "Triffel is very smart, but it's just an ordinary kittenβthe kind of magical pet of the legendary magician only exists in stories. β
"But you didn't have it with you before......?" Finley asked tentatively. Trevel let out a comfortable snoring and rubbed his head against Bauer, causing him to burst into laughter again:
"That's right, I'll leave Trickle outside, as I said, it's very clever and will come back to the carriage for me every time this time the next day - the baron is so gracious, isn't he, John?"
The honest laughter of the coachman was heard outside the carriage. Bauer continued: "But this is because the Baroness is delicate and she sneezes as soon as she touches cat hair. Most of the townspeople know Trickle, so I let him go outside for a day. And it has a lot of friends here, too: yes hahahaha, maybe it knows more kittens here than I know? β
This little episode seems to foreshadow a smooth journey. The carriage sent by the baron quickly took Jin Shaolan and them to the village of Karazan's territory (on the way, he also picked up Bauer's cat). In the distance, the outline of the village can already be seen. Even though it was morning, the village, which had already taken the rudimentary form of a town, was still shrouded in a light mist. The weather was also in an inexplicable state, it was obviously sunny, but the closer to the village, the dimmer the light cast by the sun, and when the carriage reached the entrance of the village, the sky was already white, and even the sun hanging high seemed to be separated by a layer of frosted glass. After receiving Bauer's thanks, the coachman rushed back to and from the carriage without returning. "Every time it looks like someone is chasing him, John, this old thing, hahahaha!" Bauer smiled and shook his head, leading them towards the village. "Decida, Finley, welcome......"
As if in the form of a fixation, the two apprentices' steps suddenly stopped, and they stared blankly at the end of the road, holding their breath. It was only a hundred and ten meters forward, and from the faint shadows and fog, a tall tower suddenly appeared in front of them as if the curtain had been lifted on the stage. It stood silently, as if it had existed here for eternity.
Standing a few steps in front of the two, Bauer turned to face them, smiling and stroking his chest.
"Welcome to ...... 'Tower of Medivan'. β
Until they walked into the palatial hall of the Tower of Medivan, Jin Shaolan and Finley were still immersed in the shock just now.
Whatever the reason they weren't able to see through the mist, the ancient mage tower suddenly emerged from the faint shadows, subverting their vision and memory with a sense of 'it had been/always been here'. Even at this moment, they couldn't think of any words to describe it except for the word "magnificent." When Jin Shaolan tried to depict the archmage's tower in words in his heart, he found that the glimpse that shocked his heart occupied his mind full, and he tried his best to still be able to find only one word enough to apply to it:
Magnificent.
In this almost pilgrimage state of mind, the two quasi-legal contractors were introduced by Bauer to one of the three leaders of the investigation of Karazhin, the mage Ravien. The two who didn't show up were the Spellmaster Camheath (who was also the leader of the three) and the Sorcerer Gradav, each with their own package of things to do, and the initial investigation didn't need to be carried out by the High Mage himself (which was a huge waste!). As a result, the only person who showed up to accept the two new apprentices was Lavion, who was the most able to pull away.
"New apprentice!" Lavion, whose hair was starting to dye a little gray, grunted. There was some joy in his tone, but he still spoke more like a self-talk from the immersion of his own world: "Bauer, dear Bauer, is ten thousand times more capable than those guys in the town hall who are above the top!" It's the first time I've had an apprenticeship on two days in a row. Ah, I can go back to study, I'm going back to study. β
As he spoke, he turned around and was about to walk into the passage in the middle of the hall, and Bauer couldn't help but be angry and amused. "Oh my God!" He whined, "This 'nerd'! Lavion, what kind of Light have I offended or the so-called spirit of nature, and I want to deal with you! β
Fortunately, the apprentice who followed Lavion quickly grabbed the sleeve of his robe. "Teacher, teacher!" He grudgingly smiled apologetically at Bauer, and at the same time blocked Lavion's way with his body in the jaw-dropping eyes of Jin Shaolan and Finley. "You can't go, teacher!" The ordinary-looking middle-aged man said solemnly: "You haven't completed the handover yet, these two apprentices don't belong here yet!" β
"Ah......? Ah," Lavien woke up from a dream. "That's right, that's right, the handover formalities. Yes, here it is β good! Stamp my badge. The two apprentices seemed to be honest and reliable. Ball, here's your paperwork β bring a few more apprentices over, and we'll have a hard time making progress without them. β
"Ugh." Bauer was used to it, and just rubbed his forehead with a headache. "Lavion, you're going to plant on this sooner or later." He turned to the ordinary-looking middle-aged apprentice and said, "Pilkin, watch your teacher, and don't let him starve to death in the library." And my two little friends, I'll leave it to you. β
"Mr. Bauer, the teacher is a middle-level mage, even when he is fascinated by reading, his instinct will subconsciously perform the food creation and water creation techniques, which does not require me as an ordinary apprentice to put his beak." The middle-aged apprentice replied earnestly, "And your friend, I really need to rely on the help of both of them. β
Bauer briefly introduced the two sides to each other. It turned out that the ordinary-looking middle-aged man was named Essie Pilkin, and that he was an apprentice that Lavion had brought with him when he had been sent in from Dalaran to investigate. Not surprisingly, now that he has been promoted to the head of the apprentice class, he will also be the main object of Jin Shaolan and Finley's dealings in the next few days.
And as Jin Shaolan guessed, Bauer only mentioned his name when introducing him. He may have thought that Deshuda Wind Seeker was a visitor to the Northern Elven Kingdom at first glance, but this selectivity was not unusual to those in the know.
Blocked by Pilgin and tugged at his sleeve, Lavion once again wandered away during their exchange of pleasantries. It wasn't until Bauer took his leave that he suddenly came back to his senses.
"I'm sorry my friend, Bauer. The Karazan Library has a huge collection of books, and I always inadvertently indulge in them. Luckily, I had my trusty apprentice leader, Aisi, and his presence finally saved me from too much trouble. Alas, I have neglected you, and I ask for your forgiveness. He said apologetically.
Bauer laughed. "Are you just sorry?" He teased Lavion.
"Oh yes, yes, thank you so much for sending us the 'gospel' over and over again for this understaffed survey."
With the apprentice squad leader Pilkin in front of him, today's "gospel" Jin Shaolan and Finley were slightly reddened. But Pilkin did not care, but solemnly said to Bauer: "I and the teacher thank you, Mr. Bauer, and especially me, for your gift and help me to avoid a lot of trouble." β
"It's a little thing, it's a little thing," said Bauer, smiling modestly, "βI'm not talking about you, Lavion!" Your demands are just as much of a headache to me as your nerdy spirit! β
In this way, after Bauer said goodbye and left, "Nerd" Lavien took over the two belated apprentices Jin Shaolan and Finley. After a few words, the bookish mage handed them over to Pilkin, whom he described as a "reliable apprentice leader", and asked Pilgin to take the two of them to get used to the apprenticeship.
He himself hurried straight to his beloved library, muttering "I hope these two don't slip away at night."
