Golden and jade relationship

The Chinese call a beautiful marriage "golden and jade good fate". The gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics were made of Chilean gold and Chinese jade. These medals symbolize the fate of the Chinese and Chilean peoples.

In "Dream of Red Mansions", one of China's four famous novels, Xue Baochai's "Golden Lock" and Jia Baoyu's "Tongling Baoyu" are considered to be symbols of "golden and jade good fate", reflecting the meaning of fate and feelings.

The medals of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games are designed with "gold and jade", reflecting the Chinese praise for the Olympic spirit and praise for athletes. This design scheme is very innovative, breaking through the traditional design of a single material for Olympic medals in the past, and incorporating typical Chinese cultural elements. China and Chile have also forged a good fate again through the "gold inlaid jade" medals of the Beijing Olympics: more than 6,000 gold, silver and bronze medals, the jade used is "Kunlun jade", and the alloy inlaid with jade is all provided by the world's largest mining giant, Australian BHP Billiton's mining enterprises in Chile. The gold-bearing copper concentrate from Escondida Copper, the world's largest open-pit copper mine, provided 13.04 kilograms of gold needed to make the gold medal, the Cannington lead-silver mine provided 1.34 tonnes of silver needed to make the gold and silver medals, and another copper mine, Spencer Copper, supplied 6.93 tonnes of electrolytic copper for the bronze and commemorative medals. Chile is the world's largest exporter of copper, while China is the largest importer of Chilean copper, with 40% of the copper imported coming from Chile. According to Chile's National Copper Commission, China imported 2.2 million tonnes of copper from Chile in 2014, equivalent to 39% of Chile's copper exports.

Nowadays, the economic and trade exchanges between China and Chile are getting closer and closer, and China is Chile's largest trading partner and Chile's largest export destination. Chile is China's third largest trading partner in Latin America, the second largest source of fresh fruit imports, the third largest wine importer, and the seventh largest importer of seafood. Since the entry into force of the bilateral free trade agreement in 2006, bilateral trade has grown rapidly, from US$8 billion in 2005 to US$31.8 billion in 2015, nearly four times that of 10 years ago. At present, Chinese brand cars have the highest market share in Chile, and Chilean wine, salmon, and fruits such as blueberries, cherries, and edible grapes have become favored products by Chinese consumers.

In an article published by the Chilean media, Xi Jinping used the Beijing Olympic medals as an example to express the "golden and jade relationship" of the Chinese and Chilean people. The "gold inlaid jade" made of Chilean gold and Chinese jade is a metaphor for Xi Jinping's profound judgment: the reason why China-Chile relations can develop steadily for a long time is because the two sides insist on treating each other as equals, respecting and trusting each other, because the two sides insist on complementing each other's advantages and mutual benefit and win-win results, and because the two sides insist on advancing with the times, forging ahead, and pushing the relations between the two countries to new heights one after another.

Geographically, Chile is the farthest country in the world from China. But Xi Jinping said, "There is a confidant in the sea, and the end of the world is like a neighbor." Today, the Pacific Ocean is no longer a barrier separating China and Chile, but a link and a bridge that connects each other. As Xi Jinping said during his meeting with Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, China and Chile have entered a new stage of maturity and stability with a high degree of political mutual trust, economic mutual benefit and win-win results, and increasingly close multilateral cooperation. During this visit, Xi Jinping and Bachelet unanimously decided to upgrade China-Chile relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership, marking that the strategic and overall nature of the bilateral relations has been further enhanced, and the bilateral relations have entered a new stage of deeper and comprehensive development.
