The mountains are high and the rivers are long.

-- "Actively Establishing the Asian Security Concept and Creating a New Situation in Security Cooperation: Speech at the Fourth Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia".

■Interpretation

How can mutual trust be built between countries? How can consensus be built within a region? At the CICA Summit, Comrade Xi Jinping quoted this ancient saying to elaborate on the "diplomatic rhythm" of "one step at a time". Whether it is between friends or countries, trust is a fragile product, difficult to cultivate and easy to break, it needs to be carefully cared for and cultivated, and it cannot be rushed for success and quick success. He said that China is an active advocate and firm practitioner of the Asian security concept, and that China will step by step to strengthen security dialogue and cooperation with all sides, jointly explore the formulation of a regional security code of conduct and an Asian security partnership plan, and make Asian countries good partners of mutual trust and cooperation on an equal footing. Comrade Xi Jinping also once quoted a saying, "There is no mountain higher than a person, and there is no road longer than a foot", whether it is the exchanges between countries or the development of a region or even the world, as long as we continue to work hard, accumulate small victories into big victories, accumulate steps or even thousands of miles, we will definitely be able to reach the set destination.

The inscription says: The mountains are high and the mountains are long. After the saints, it will be great and prosperous. By the saints and sages, or for the tyranny. Build no heirs, Jibei sparse Xinjiang. Qi people are Lourdes, and their clan is called king. …… It is a gold stone carving, unveiled in the road. Songye Baiye, there is Luo Zhimei. Those who pass by will come down to observe the letter.

——(Tang) Liu Yuxi, "The Late Tang Dynasty Supervises the Imperial History and Presents the Book of the Right Servant to Shoot the Prince's Shinto Monument"

■Definition

"The Ancient Tang Dynasty Supervisor Imperial History Presents the Book of the Right Servant to Shoot the Prince's Shinto Tablet" was written by the Tang Dynasty poet Liu Yuxi. The owner of the stele is Wang Jun, the word is really long, and he died at the age of 55. The part of the inscription that rhymes is the inscription. "The mountains accumulate and are high, and the rivers accumulate and grow" comes from the beginning of the inscription on the stele, and the method of comparison is adopted. It means that mountains are raised by the accumulation of earth and rocks, and water flows continuously by accumulating drips. The two words "product" highlight the role of quantitative change. With continuous accumulation, the mountain can be high and the water can grow. The same is true for mutual trust between studies, careers and even countries, which all need to be accumulated over a long period of time and worked hard to achieve success.

The ancients had a deep understanding of the importance of accumulation. Such as: the rope saws the wood is broken, and the water drops are worn by the stone; Gather sand into a tower, gather armpits into fur; Freezing three feet, not a day's cold. "Xunzi Persuasion" has a saying: "The soil becomes a mountain, and the wind and rain are prosperous; The water becomes an abyss, and the dragon is born; …… If you don't accumulate small streams, you can't become rivers and seas. Perhaps this remark had a profound impact on Liu Yuxi's phrase "the mountains are high and the mountains are long".

It should be pointed out that due to the limited understanding of the earth's crustal movement by the ancients, there is a saying that "mountains accumulate and are high".
