Book 1: The Believer of Light Chapter 66: That Faith in the Heart
The flames crackled, tongues of fire still clinging to the beams, and in the billowing smoke, Tom rushed out of the house, his face covered in black ash that made it impossible to see his face.
"Eh, I said, Tom, what are you going to do? I told you that there are no living people here, all of them are dead. Old John said with some hatred.
"No, there are still alive, I heard. Tom ignored Old John's persuasion and once again rushed into the house, which had been completely engulfed in flames.
"Eh, this guy. Old John sighed, and then said to the soldiers of the Eloda Empire who were standing aside watching the play: "You little rabbits, go and search the remaining houses for me, and don't miss anything." ”
"I've searched them all. The reluctant voices of the soldiers were heard over there. "Hey, let you search it, what so much nonsense?" said old John, who kicked one of the soldiers to the ground, "get ahead, and if this happens, I'll throw you in and find it." ”
Looking at the few soldiers who were pouring in and peeing, Old John was full of gloom in his heart.
A few days ago, his border garrison of the Elloda Empire received a military report that there was a corpse poison epidemic on the border with the Walloon Plateau, and many villages had been infected, and then the Imperial Military Department ordered Tom Sr.'s troops to go to the place where the outbreak was most serious to clean up.
John Sr. had seen corpse poison once when he was very young. It was a very small epidemic, it was detected early, and it was dealt with in a timely manner, so it did not cause much impact, but the harm caused by the outbreak of corpse poison was so deep. A radius of 100 miles has become a no-man's land, and birds are forbidden.
John Sr. was one of the very few survivors of the outbreak of corpse poison, and after losing his parents, John Sr. wandered around, and finally entered the Imperial Border Garrison, becoming a veteran oilman with mixed soldiers' rations.
I thought that I could spend my old age in the border garrison without the risk of war, but I didn't expect to encounter a corpse poison outbreak, and I was extremely unlucky to be sent to the most dangerous place.
When Old John heard the news as soon as he heard the news, he went to Tom, who was then the captain of the first squadron of the garrison, and explained to him the danger of their trip, hoping that Tom would think of his comrades and go to the garrison commander to change the order. Old John believed that as long as Tom, who was the eldest son of the garrison, went to find him, he would definitely be able to escape, but Old John did not expect that this order was requested by Tom himself.
Frustrated, John learned that he could not change his order, so he consulted with the other veterans about whether to launch a mutiny after departure and coerce Tom to return or go somewhere else.
But John Sr. never expected that Tom had discovered his plan, and was honest with him, and told him what he thought, and let John Sr. join his staff because he had experienced corpse poison.
Although John Sr. didn't accept this, in the face of the honor of his family and country, the rest of the squadron agreed with Tom's plan, which was to avoid the zombies and instead move the border dwellers who did not have time to escape to safety.
When he heard this plan, Old John just sneered, and the aristocratic lord, who had not grown any hair, did not understand how much of an impact a hopeless refugee would have on the army.
Old John didn't say anything, the atmosphere of the squadron had been ignited, and it was no longer something that could be changed by two or three words of his own.
So during the march, Old John still did not give up and escaped with other veterans who were unwilling to go to the corpse poison epidemic area.
But Tom obviously heard Old John's name, so every time something happened, he would talk to Old John about things, and as a result, several people who plotted with him to escape had succeeded, but he, the planner, had no chance to escape.
Gradually, John Sr. accepted to help Tom rescue the civilians trapped in the epidemic area and unable to escape.
What Old John didn't expect was that Tom was worthy of being a noble young master who had returned from studying in the imperial capital, and he had a good set of troop arrangements, which made Old John, a person who had already experienced many battles, large and small, ashamed of himself.
After successfully rescuing several groups of civilians, Old John was convinced by Tom and sincerely helped him to save the people.
But what Old John didn't notice was that Tom became more and more proud after saving several groups of people, and in his eyes, those zombies that made people talk about it, and the corpse poison that he couldn't avoid was just an exaggeration by others.
So after learning that a group of zombies had attacked a village, Tom decided to send troops to the village to save the people.
Hearing this, John Sr. immediately approached Tom and objected. For the villages that have been attacked by zombies, Old John said when he promised to help Tom that as long as he has been attacked, he will give up directly. Because, no one knows if among the surviving group of people, there will be people who have been infected by the corpse poison. Keeping this group of people who could erupt at any moment by their side is undoubtedly suicidal.
But Tom, who was already full of pride, did not listen to Old John, but chose to go his own way. So there's a scene where Tom breaks into a house that's already on fire and takes the baby.
When he arrived at this unknown hamlet, John Sr. was glad that the village had already been burned, indicating that there would be no survivors inside. After being attacked, many villages will choose to burn the village with a fire if they can't resist, rather than turning themselves into zombies that are not as good as the undead.
As he approached the village, John said to Tom that there was no need to inspect such a village.
However, John Sr. did not expect that Tom now has imagined himself as a savior, and he thinks that he can save everyone. Therefore, Tom did not listen to old John's words at all, and directly ordered everyone to go into the village and search.
The results of the search reassured Old John that there was no living body except for a few bodies that had not yet been burned. Seeing the disappointed expression on Tom's face, Old John was ready to let people quit after a few words of comfort. But what they didn't expect was that just as they were about to leave, Tom heard a cry in a house.
Suddenly Tom became energetic again, and despite the opposition of the others, he rushed directly into the fire, ready to save the baby.
And so the opening scene happened.
While the soldiers scattered to continue their search, in a clearing not far from the village, the zombies who had just attacked the village froze in place. At the head of the group of zombies stood a man with a hunched body, his shabby clothes stained with chemicals, staining his otherwise gray robes in a variety of colors.
What is strange is that none of the zombies behind him want to bite him, and it seems that this person is also a member of the zombies.
Sensing the news from the spy spider left behind in the village, the zombie-like monster let out a wry laugh, "My little cuties, I haven't eaten enough, so let's give you another full meal." As soon as the strange man's words fell, the zombies who had stopped standing still began to agitate and began to rush towards the small village.
Old John, who stayed in front of the room, felt more and more uneasy in his heart, and he knew that if he didn't leave this place, no one would be able to leave.
"Tom, quick, we need to get out of here, or we're all going to die here. Old John shouted into the room. But there was no response from Tom.
While Old John was anxiously waiting, he remembered a scream at one end of the village, followed by several screams in succession.
"What's the matter?" said Old John, grabbing a passing soldier, "Go, take a look over there." ”
As a result, before the soldier had passed, he saw a group of soldiers being chased and running towards this side, and behind them was a huge army of zombies.
"Quick, array!" Old John's mournful shout resounded through the destroyed village, but the scattered soldiers could not organize a decent queue at all, and the few people who resisted were quickly swallowed up by the zombie army.
"I found it, I rescued him. Tom rushed out of the burning room, shouting excitedly. As a result, the comrades-in-arms were bitten by zombies and screamed.
Seeing his once close comrade-in-arms die tragically in front of him, Tom froze in place, "Tom be careful. Old John flew and threw the stunned Tom into the fire, and the zombies who wanted to bite him also threw themselves into the fire.
When Tom woke up, he found that there were no more people around him, and there were only a few people left in the original team of three or four hundred.
Tom looked at old John sitting in the distance, wanting to say something, but didn't say it, old John sat on the rocks, looking at the remnant sun in the distance, silent and didn't know what he was thinking.
Tom, standing on the playground of Little Rock, will remember what John Sr. said to himself, Tom, no matter what he did wrong, it is enough to know that he can correct his mistakes, and don't die because of a failure. Then the person or thing that is lost because of a mistake becomes meaningless.
Old John, I don't understand until now why I was so stupid, why I had such a strong self-esteem, and why I stubbornly left the Eloda Empire. Now I don't, I still have to do what I should do for my own ideas. You don't need to worry about saving others, even if you face endless dangers, you have to face them bravely, even if it is at the cost of your own life. Tom knew that at the moment when Old John died on the wall, the confused Tom was dead, and the original Tom was alive.
"Let's go. Hogg waved his hand, and the silent team of thirty began to advance out of the city under the gaze of everyone. Outside Little Rock, the barbarian army retreated like a tide again, but this time there were so few corpses left under the walls, and more were the corpses of the defenders of Little Rock.
Sacsy walked in the center of his tribe's warriors with a huge battle axe, his eyes staring intently at the crumbling city walls, a sneer on his lips. In a moment, the city will be mine, and everything on the Walloon plateau will belong to the great Grand Chief of Saksi. "Charge!" With a shout of rage from Saxy, the elite barbarian troops began to charge towards Little Rock. And this is the gate of Little Rock, but it slowly opens.
Less than five kilometers away from Little Rock, the Holy Knights of the Right Hand of God were hurrying here. In the opposite direction, the zombie army is moving slowly, and in the zombie army, the zombie monster who wiped out Tom's squadron is sitting leisurely on a chair carried by four giant zombies, drinking wine.
